The day I met Mara, I knew I’d never be able to let go.
Everything about her was perfect. Her eyes shone like the first light after a thunderstorm—pale gold breaking through the dark. Mozart himself could never compose a melody as beautiful as her laugh. She was everything; I was nothing. Yet she chose me.
If it were up to me, I’d have never left her side. But war doesn’t ask men if they’re ready. It only takes.
I promised to write to her every day. But what good were letters full of empty promises? I’m alive. I miss you. Don’t forget me. How could I send those lies when each dawn brought me closer to a hole in the ground? So I wrote them anyway—pages and pages I never sent. Most days, the only word that mattered was her name. Mara. I traced it with my thumb, smudging the ink like a prayer. If I could just make it home, I’d tell her myself.
Then—a shot.
The sound didn’t register at first. Just a crack in the distance, like a branch breaking. Then the pain, hot and sudden, splitting through my chest. I looked down. A stain bloomed across my uniform, dark as wine.
Someone shouted my name. Elias!
But all I could think was, I never sent the letters.
—One Year Later—
A knock sounds at my door.
When I open it, a stranger stands there, clutching a weathered piece of paper. His eyes are hollow with the look of a man who delivers bad news for a living.
"Are you Mara?"
My lips twitch into the ghost of a smile—automatic, hopeful—until I see his face. Not him. Never him.
"Yes," I say, my voice fraying at the edges. "Please, come in."
He shakes his head. "Can’t stay, ma’am." A pause. Too long. "We found a young man in a ditch near the old mill road. He had this on him."
The world narrows to the paper in his hand. His mouth keeps moving, but I don’t hear the words—just the thunder of my own pulse.
Then, like an axe falling:
"They found his body with the unsent letter in his pocket."
The man holds it out, and I take it quickly, too quickly. My name bleeds across the page in blurred ink—from rain, or from tears, or from fingers tracing the letters too many times in the dark.

Hello there!
I just have to say this is absolutely beautiful and so very well written. Such a heartbreaking and melancholy story that tugged a bit at my heartstrings; nearly felt like my own significant other died in battle for a moment lol! I adore your writing style and the pacing of the story is rather easy to follow and is really engaging. You had me hooked from the first line!
Despite the short length of the story, I instantly fell in love with the characters Elias and Mara and the ending had me craving for more.
Something I really liked about the story was how Elias mentions he traces Mara's name in one of his letters with his thumb, causing the ink to smudge, and the story closes with Mara noticing the smudged ink; such a bittersweet detail.
Overall I really enjoied this short story, and I am interested to see what else you will come up with! ^^

And if you like , I can write more on their story. i need something to write about anyway lol ^^
Of course!! <3 Awe thank you ^^ That would be awesome! I%u2019d totally read it when you%u2019ve uploaded it!
Ah! My heart crumbles at doomed romance! This was something well written and I very much enjoyed reading this! Historical fiction is something a bit newer to me but I have found a liking to it, if I could I would like to know which historical event or time period this is set in! When and if I have some free time I will check out some of your other works, this was a great read! Keep up the good work!
Oh my gosh I just have to know more from this story. This is so heartbreaking, but I'm so drawn in. The unsent letter raises suspicions on what exactly was said, and the blanks between love gestures leave my mind going nuts wondering what is to come of this. Quite a creative plot with such a talented writing of the scene painted. I truly enjoyed this one and hope I can find your others to read.
I actually do have a little prologue to this story, and I do plan on writing more! Thank you for your review
Do you have a link for the prologue?
This story is very good and I am very touched after imagining them as the whisper of an old love,Geometry Vibes a strong love but now only a faint trace remains in the mind and on the yellowed papers now.
Awww, thank you; this comment is so sweet!
If you have any suggestions on what I should write, feel free to let me know!
