Prologue

The game finally ended. This allowed Anulekha to lean back in her chair to watch wistfully as her achievements burned to ashes. From the ashes a new board began to form and she tiredly gazed at it for a minute before waiting for the ashes to clear away.

An eyebrow went up when she finally took the time to examine her next puzzle. It was a rather intriguing challenge, to say the least. The cherrywood board had been made with three sides each a different color. The side that faced her was violet while the opposing were red and black. She smirked slightly. Of course she had played multiple games that usually led to terrible accidents for those on the opposing, but this was truly a new experience to fight two sides to win.

The last item formed was a large hourglass with a red nine painted on the glass. Upon noticing it, the young woman winced at the short time. If she did not create a successful plan before it emptied the current game would become reality. A grim frown decorated her face as she finally picked up a paper from the stack next to her chair and wrote down: Violet Pawn moves two squares at start. She moved the designated pawn after have placed the pencil behind her ear. The hourglass began to flow. The sand as it fell reminded Anulekha of her plan.

Two hours had passed and only a few pieces remained within the games. The rest had been burned and their ashes lain in a growing pile off to the side. Anulekha continued to eye the board, fingers tracing the grooves while scowling. Gray eyes flickered around the squares for possible moves. The last pawn was moved forward a square by a trembling hand.

Alexiss advanced to the gates of Himing Academy. An army fell in behind her, small and fierce. Together, they persisted onwards in the fight with the memory of their lost comrades close to their hearts. A quick flick of her hand halted the army a few feet before the gate, shadowed by the thick forests. Just shy of the wall, Alexis stood at the edge of the trees well protected by the gate’s shadows. Fierce eyes scanned the area when a soft rustle in a bush nearby caused her back to tense. Without a thought, she threw the dagger from the hidden slot within her cloak sleeve. As a hare fled the bushes she and a few of the soldiers chuckled before resuming their focus on their target.

A soldier broke free from his position to retrieve the dagger before the leader could comment. He smiled sheepishly while handing it to her waiting hand.

“You shouldn’t have broken out of position, soldier. I would have gotten it myself.” Alexis rebuked, lightly.

The commander glances over at her while the soldier scurried back into position. Subtly, she shook her head. A consequence wasn’t not warranted while they were doing such an important goal. A swift nod is given  in return and she turned back to the gate.

Her small hands removed her hood after the desire to feel the sun’s warmth finally won out her resolve. An orange hue reflected the angles of her heart-shaped face which was set in an expression of sheer determination. The towers loomed over them which casts shadows allowing the army to reach out to the gates. The false aura of calm was not able to deter the group from their plan, it only caused the young woman to glower at the gate with great disdain.

Hand poised over a knight, Anulekha paused in the chess game. After a glance around the board she switched to the Queen and moved it forward. With baited breath she waited for the consequence of her decision.

Elegant, slim fingers belonging to a scarred hand grasped the metal lock upon the gate. Alexis smiled at the memoir of her last battle before ripping the lock away. The twisted metal did not resemble the lock any more as it fell with a thump a few feet behind the woman.

Black and red feathered wings spread wide as she took to the air. ‘For our freedom!” She roared, vehemently.

The Black King moved up. Cautiously Anulekha watched, yet it did not take any of the pieces. So with flurry of her hand she moved the knight up. A third of the hourglass would have passed within fifteen minutes. A black castle crumbled under the attack of the knight, giving the woman a grim smile of victory as it burns in a bright flame.

The roar of the army echoed her words, their passion revived as they charged at the castle whose gates now opened wide. She thanked the fates that the school was dormant while watching the attack. An open window near her target caught her eye. After flying inside her eyes wandered around the dim hallway for danger. Finding none she moved away from the windows, wings tucked against her back. Without a sound she began to dart through the maze of hallways.

Anulekha paused as an opposing knight took out the last pawn. With a discouraged sigh she cleared away the burned pieces. Silence overcame the room as she looked over the board in thought.

A sharp turn of a corner and Alexis quickly skidded to a halt outside the elm door. Fingers coiled tightly behind her back, clutching the large staff almost painfully while she spots a magically hidden window.  The professors were quickly being dispatched by her army despite their defiant move to set the grass to flame. Pride glinted in her violet eyes as she turned back to the door with a smile twitching upon her face.

The game would come to an end soon, Anulekha noted as she held the Queen within her small hand. Each move now would decide if the vision would be the one she needed, for better or worse. She mustered up the courage to take the opposing castle with the Queen. Leaning back she waited for the outcome.

Alexis slammed the door open with adrenaline pumping through her veins. Startled, the old man jumped before facing her. The scent of dusty old books filled the air and upon closer examination she found several seemingly priceless heirlooms. But as she looked ahead a flag caught her sight and eyes narrowed with hate. Hanging above a window was the Vates race’s flag, altered to suit the man’s dark desire.

Bottle green eyes widened with shock at her appearance, a vicious smirk passed her lips as she stalked closer into the room. Boldy she told him with a voice leaving chills, “I’ve already taken Allen. It’s time we ended this game, grandfather.”

With serpentine deceit illuminating his eyes, her grandfather merely smirked. ‘You would have had much to learn, foolish woman. I’m not simple minded like Allen. You should’ve known that, Granddaughter.”

He striked fast, watching as confusion crossed his grandchild’s face. Pulling the dagger out of her chest he leaned forward to whisper with a malicious laughter echoing the room, “Eternity is mine. Reckless girl, you led it right to me. For that I thank you, Alexis.”

Now allowed to move forward with his plan, he shoved the dying woman to the side. Without so much as a glance upon her direction, he picked up the long red cloak off the hook and stalked out of the room.

The Black King destroyed the remainder of the pieces as the others danced merrily around the Queen’s crumpled heap on the board. A growl from Anulekha didn’t ease her sunken stomach as she witnessed the rather brutal sight.

“There has to be a way. If I don’t then all my plans will be for nothing!” She hissed through clenched teeth as she resigned herself to resetting the board for the next game. Her hands paused when another vision crossed her mind.
The army is prepared to conquer, my lord.” A man bowed low to his lord when presenting the news. The Lord’s green eyes peered at the man with such intensity the other’s hands fiddles in anxiety. With a cold smirk the leader stood from the black throne to reach the room’s center.

“Very well then let the humans become ours. It’s time that the Yami ruled over the world once more!” The roar pierced the air as the soldier fled in fear to spread the man’s words across the planets.

Six hours remained on the hourglass. The board now reset, Anulekha moved the knight forward with a quick whisper of luck. She fingered the corner of a new sheet of paper, chewing on the pencil with a nervous bobbing of her leg which she didn’t bother to stop.

Starting down at her daughter, Linda smiled. Blocks laid beside the child as she slept, having drifted off when learning to count. She knelt down to pick up the tired five year old, who blinked at her with weary violet eyes.

With a newspaper held in hand, Robert entered the living room from the kitchen. Spotting the rest of his small family he smiled as he crept upon his wife and child to whisper in Linda’s ear, “Bed time for the tigress?”

Linda jumped. Hand rested over her heart she threw her husband a fierce glare only to receive a warm laugh in return. With a shake of her head she finally chuckled before answering his question, “Indeed it is. Such a rough day, playing with the blocks.”

The couple both chuckled as they began to climb the stairs to the daughter’s room. Upon entering they both watched their daughter sleep in her father’s arms, reluctant to let her go just yet. Yet, as the minutes passed Robert finally crossed the room to place her on the bed.

Almost three hours had passed now. The black side now lay abandoned. An obvious struggle had broken out between the violet and red sides.  Eyes watched with crushed hope as the Queen was taken over by the Red King. Tears filled her eyes as the vision of what this path would lead entered her mind. Sliding to the floor Anulekha witnessed the wrong path once more. Only this time things turned out different.

A dark silhouette of a human crept through the house of Angemon. Fingers curled inside his jacket. He smirked as he came across the two parents tucking in a small child. Eyes gleaming with cold hate he withdrew the metal staff.

The parents turned at the sense of danger. In their hands held similar staffs. Alas, it was too late. The two fell to the ground in front of the terrified girl. Screams erupted from her throat. Scrambling away from the man she huddled under the covers. Violet eyes peeked out from beneath the small blanket. The man smiled with sick delight as he leveled the staff to the child. A flash of red ended a life of a five year old before she could truly live it.

Anulekha tossed the chess board away in rage. Grey eyes burning with irritation she muttered over and over, “There has to be a way to win.”

Black eyes surveyed the map in front of them. A pale hand reached out to grasp a wine glass. Inside the elegant goblet swirled a red liquid. As the hands lifted it to the dry lips of the owner there came a reverberate knock on the door.

“Enter.” Came the sharp command as the eyes turned red when the taste of metal shocked the man’s taste-buds.

A man came striding giving off an air of confidence and darkness. The man knelt in front of the red throne biding his time for the other to respond. Underneath the calm facade laid a tensed worried mind. The man flinched when finally the elder stood.

“Did you really expect me to let you live on as you are? A threat to my plans?” The Lord lectured coldly. The left hand cupped the man’s chin forcing him to look at him.

Silas flinched at the touch before snarling, “Then kill me! You have already killed everyone I care about.” The anguish showed in his eyes as he gazed sorrowfully down at the floor.

The man simply smirked whispering into the other’s ear, “Oh no. That would be too nice. I would much rather do this.”

Without another word the man tilted the younger man’s head and bit down. Silas twisted in the crushing grip as he felt the vampire’s venom seep into his body. Dropping him into a crumpled heap the man let go. Stepping back and into his chair he whispered, “Now we shall take the world into our dark grip.”

Fingers delicately fiddled with her sleeve as she paced. Back and forth she went. Twirling a thick lock of her brown hair around her finger she muttered angrily to herself. Almost the last of the remaining time had past. She only had five minutes to place the first move to her victory.

“I got it!” She exclaimed after what seemed like hours.

Kneeling as she picked up the chess board once more she began to formulate the plan in her mind. The steps began to fall into place. The path to victory. The game was settled as she confidently moved a pawn forward a square. The hourglass now lay empty. The nine hours have passed. The game now was no longer just a game. With forced hope Anulekha allowed the consequences to be shoved away in hopes she would be able to stop the destruction. The cries of an infant rang throughout the pocket of space. They brought hope and fear into her heart. She knew this was no longer about the easy choices.

Linda smiled down at the newborn girl in her arms. Violet eyes glistened with tears as she whispered, “Your name shall be Alexis Angemon. The defender of the Angemons.”

Robert leaned over and kissed his infant daughter on the forehead whispering, “She will turn out just like you, honey.”

Linda smiled at her husband and said jokingly, “She might just wind up as your daughter for all we know, Robert.”

The two parents bartered playful insults back and forth. Pride evident in their eyes as a knock sounded through the room. Turning to open it, Robert called out, “Who is it?”

“Rosa and Silas.” Two voices rang in unison. The parents grinned at each other and allowed their friends to enter the room on this joyous occasion.

Very nice! Can't wait to read more. I think this is very well written and it had me at that "can't put the book down" stage. Can't wait to see what else is to come. Great job!
