Aria

I couldn’t help that I was shaking, I was nervous. I checked the piece of paper in my hand. This was the right place. In front of me was a beige two story house that looked very similar to the other houses on the street. I had taken three busses and a train to get here. I couldn’t drive, as I was only 15, and walking from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Worthington, Ohio wasn’t exactly a good idea. I put my hand out to knock on the door just as it swung open.

A girl stood in front of me. She was about an inch taller than I. She had short, ragged cut, green hair and a short sleeved shirt on that said “Welcome!” She turned around and yelled “I was right!” to someone inside. “She was just about to knock, told you!” Then she turned to me and smiled. “Hey, I’m Zee, and I’m being forced to show you around.” As she spoke she fell in and out of a soft British accent. She let me in and almost immediately put a hoodie on. “I hate this shirt,” she muttered. “Ok, so here’s the kitchen and that way’s the family room. Up the stairs are the bedrooms. We’re going to be roommates! Sorry for being so rushed, but I have someone I’m not exactly happy with right now. In that room,” she continued, pointing to a door on the left, “should be Logan . I’m sure he’ll show you around a bit more. I’ll see you at dinner probably. Again, sorry for the rush.” Then Zee sped through a doorway at the end of the hall. I put my bag down and looked around. Wow, I was actually here.

Zee

“You did what?” I asked him, trying to be as serious as I could. I ran my hand through my short hair and sighed as I sensed someone coming up the driveway. I grited my teeth. “We’ll continue this conversation later, she’s coming.” I ran out of the room and swung open the front door. I looked out to find a girl staring at me. She had a beat-up backpack slung over one shoulder that looked like it had been at the mercy of a bear. She was shorter than me by about an inch and had striking, dark blue eyes that complimented her long, light blue hair that swayed at her hips. It glinted in the hot sun. The girl was pretty, I’ll give her that. It had been raining only moments before, and there was a rainbow in the sky. Stupid Ohio weather needed to make up it’s mind. I introduced myself to the girl and let her inside, putting on my hoodie to cover up the stupid T-shirt. Why was I wearing it? Let’s just say I lost a bet.

I quickly showed her around and pointed her in the direction of Logan. I didn’t have the time to take the new girl around, I had some scolding to do, and at least I knew I could trust Logan. She gave me one last, nervous look and walked off. She looked like a good person, but you never know who is who they seem to be or say they are. My last roommate was an example of that. I walked back into the social room, ready to scold Matt, but found it empty. “Where’d that little weasel go?” I muttered to myself. I knew I should’ve tied him to a chair or something. Though I had to admit that what Matt did was pretty brilliant, it was also dangerous.

Aria

I walked up to the door Zee had pointed to. It was open just enough that I could walk in. The room had old wooden floor and the walls were painted a deep shade of maroon. A large bookshelf was on the wall opposite of me, filled with books. On the far side, by a window, was a small tv surrounded by some chairs. Leaning back in one chair was a boy with his back to me, staring at the tv. I knocked gently on the doorframe. He fell backward and cursed under his breath. “Who are you?” he asked, standing up and rubbing the back of his head. He was tall, and had blonde hair. Something about him seemed familiar.

“I’m Aria” I said in a whisper, just loud enough to hear. “Are you Logan? Zee said you would show me around.”

He nodded, “She never had the patience for tours. Why do all you girls have rainbow hair? ” He paused and looked at the clock, “Come on, I’ll give you a tour like she promised.”

We stepped into the hall. “Before I actually show you the rooms I’m just gonna say the layout.” Logan said, “First door on the left, where we were, living room. First door on the right, kitchen and dining room. At the end of the hallway is the ‘social room’ where we just kind of hang out. It connects back to this door.” He pointed to a door at the end of a nearby staircase and continued to talk. “The bathroom is second door on the left plus there’s one upstairs with the bedrooms.” He looked at me and I nodded. “Now, I’ll actually show you the rooms.” I grabbed my bag and followed him down the hall, when suddenly another guy sped out of the living room, screaming and laughing, closely followed by Zee who was yelling at him. As he passed, Logan pulled me into the kitchen, “If you get in their way, they’ll run right over you.”

Zee

I was going to check on the newbie, figuring that Matt was long gone, when I tripped over something that was huddled behind the coffee table. “Ow,” I said, pushing myself up from the ground. I figured I had tripped over a pillow, I’m not the most coordinated. I looked back to find myself face to face with a person, who looked pretty scared.

“Oops,” said Matt. He jumped off the floor and ran for his life. I was shocked for about five seconds until my brain registered what had happened. “MATT. DON’T YOU RUN, YOU IDIOT, I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN,” I yelled and chased after him. He was laughing hysterically as we ran around the house. Up ahead, I saw the new girl, (what was her name again?) and Logan walking towards the staircase. Both of their eyes widened and Logan pulled her safely into the kitchen. He had learned the hard way that Matt and I will not stop for “pedestrians.”

That wasn’t stopping Matt though. He saw a new face, and he wanted to check it out. He ran into the kitchen, me right on his heels. Logan was ready though, and the second Matt turned to run into the kitchen, he slammed the door. And Matt went down. The new girl looked appalled. Logan and I were laughing, and poor Matt was whimpering on the floor. “I can take it from here. Take care of Matt,” I told Logan, steering the new girl out of the kitchen and up the stairs.

Aria

The moment of safety didn’t last long. The boy who had been running turned to enter the kitchen but Logan slammed the door shut. I heard a loud thud, then Logan re-opened the door. Zee was standing on the other side laughing at the boy who was now on the ground, making some unhappy noises. Now that he wasn’t running, I could see him better. He had brown eyes and brown hair. Like Logan, he was also tall. “I’ll take it from here,” Zee said, calming herself. “Take care of Matt.” She pulled me out of the kitchen and brought me up the stairs. There were five doors. “This is the bathroom,” she said pointing to the one in the middle. “Matt and Logan share that room,” She said pointing to the furthest room on the right. “And we’ll be sharing that room,” she added, pointing to the door on the furthest left.

“What about those rooms?” I asked, nodding to the two rooms she hadn’t mentioned.

“Next to Logan and Matt, that’s where Jake and Silver stay. Next to us, Mae and Diana”.

I nodded.“Where are they?”

“I think Mae was in the dining room, but makes sense if you didn’t see her. It was kinda chaotic.” Zee was taken over by a giggle fit, but then she took a breath and continued. “Jake and Diana might be outside for a walk. Not sure honestly. And Silver you rarely see, He’s pretty quiet.”

Zee

I showed the new girl around. She seemed pretty lost, like her brain couldn’t take all this information. “So...what’s your name?” Good start, Zee, I thought. Always start a conversation with that, I guess.

“Aria,” she said and she fixed me with her sharp eyes, as if she was looking right through me.

“Right,” I said, suddenly nervous. I opened the door to our room. “Viol-a” I began to say, then stuttered. I mentally slapped myself. I had forgotten to clean my room. Two beds lay on opposite sides of the room. You could tell which side was mine though, my bed was unmade and had a huge pile of dirty clothes heaved on top, and my desk was heaped with books and snacks. Clothes had fallen off the hanger in the closet, and on the window sill lay a dead plant. “Ummm…” I stammered, embarrassed. “That plant was dead before I got here. Maybe?” Though, Aria calmly walked past all of this and sat her book bag on her new bed.

“So,” she said, “I should probably mention that I’m pretty messy. Hope that’s alright with you.” She added with a smile.

I laughed. “I must admit that I’m rubbish at cleaning. My old roomma-” I stopped myself. “Another person used to help me.” I blushed and changed the subject. I nodded at her backpack. “Is that all you have with you?” I asked, surprised.

“Yeah. Pretty much.” She dumped the contents of her bag on the bed. I was about to see what she had brought when I heard a scream from downstairs.

Aria

Zee showed me the room we were sharing. I dumped my backpack out on my bed. Her side of the room was a little bit messy but that didn’t bother me. She tried to explain how her old roommate helped her clean but she stopped herself, obviously uncomfortable on the topic. Suddenly someone screamed. Gosh, this place was crazy. Zee bolted down the stairs and I followed. Downstairs, three people were gathered at the door, one of them Matt, who was arguing with a guy obviously stronger than he was. The guy was average height. I was bad with guessing race but he looked Indian. Behind him was a short girl with light pink hair, tied up in a bun. She was trying to calm him down but it obviously wasn’t working.

“That’s Diana and Jake.” Zee whispered. That’s when I noticed both of them were covered in silly string and an empty can was sitting by Matt’s feet. There was extra silly string laying limp all over the ground. I couldn’t help but be slightly annoyed with the mess. It looked like it would take forever to clean up. I watched as the silly string moved itself into a neat pile and I couldn’t help but feel satisfied. Nobody seemed to notice.

Logan walked in a loudly cleared his throat. The arguing stopped and everyone looked over at him. “If you hadn’t noticed,” He said, “We have a new resident.”

Matt waved at me. “Hi! I’m Matt Willeke”, Then he ran off, taking the opportunity to get away from Jake. Jake mumbled something under his breath then offered me his hand. I shook it and he stomped off.

Diana came over and talked to me. “Hi,” She said sweetly, “I’m Diana, and you are?”

“Aria Hadie” I responded.

She smiled, “That’s a pretty name. Welcome. You’ll get used to the chaos.”

“Um, thanks” I said, not sure how else to respond. She smiled and walked the direction Jake had went.

“When’s dinner?” Zee asked Logan.

“Whenever Mae’s done making it. It’s her night. Should be soon.”

Zee

I honestly wasn’t that shocked to see Jake and Matt fighting. Everyone fights with Matt some time in their life. I’m pretty sure he’s wanted in Kansas. I came downstairs to Diana and Jake dripping with bright blue silly string. Matt was arguing with Jake and laughing as he pointed at the floor where an empty can and more silly string lay. Diana got over all the chaos quickly and started to talk to Aria. Finally, with some help from Logan, everyone was done arguing and introduced to Aria.

I smelled the dinner before it I saw it. Let’s just say I was dribbling all over my new hoodie. I loved it when Mae cooked. We had to take turns cooking each day, but if we can’t cook then we pretty much get out of it. We don’t want people to get food poisoning. Thinking of food was better than thinking about what to tell Aria. Newbies almost always freak out or faint. We all sat down and waited. Aria was in between Matt and I and seemed uncomfortable. Couldn’t blame her, really. We were pretty weird. Mae came out with her apron on, spatula in the air, and plate of dinner in the other hand. Her long, straight red hair went down her back, right at the shoulder blades.

She set the food on the table and sat down next to Diana. “Hey sugar! Nice to see a new face!” She said to Aria.

Before she could say more, I butted in. Beating around the bush was pointless. “Okay. Now that we are all here, we should explain to Aria who she is and who we are,” I said calmly, digging into the mashed potatoes. The table grew silent.

A/N

This formatting is HORRID. Trying to fix it but I'll have to do it by hand later.

Also, Jasmine and Diana are the same person! Please tell us if we missed a Jasmine that should be Diana! Thanks!

Hey!

I saw that the 3rd part of this is in the Green Room, so I decided to read the parts before and drop a couple reviews. :)

The Review!

Plot

Spoiler

Ok. So the title is what caught my eye with this, even though I have absolutely no idea what the word means. (I should probably look that up...) This chapter didn't disappoint, I liked it a lot.
This chapter starts pretty strong. You grabbed me with your first sentence; Simple and Sweet and Leaves You Curious (SSLYC. Weird motto of mine, sorry)
Honestly, from this first chapter I don't really know where this story is going. It's left me curious, but I feel so conflicted since I'm unsure of what's really happening. Why was Aria sent to this place? WHAT is this place? I feel like if I knew a bit more I'd be hooked. My first thought is maybe the paper Aria looks that in the first paragraph had a brief statement that explained some things. Maybe from her mother? Unless, this is an orphanage. So, maybe just whoever sent her to this place. Just a "sorry for sending you off, hope you like the new place. We had to send you there, because of...[insert so and so, but don't info-dump" I don't know, I'm probably being extremely nit-picky.
I loved the small tour around the house, it's a good way to get to know the setting.
The scene with the silly string was really well done!
I also liked the gathering for dinner. :)

Characters

Spoiler

Aria:
I like Aria, she seems like a level-headed character.
Zee:
I easily feel like Zee could be my favorite character. She seems kinda edgy, which I like. :)
Mae:
She almost seems like the "mother figure" of this small little group, and she seems nice.
Logan:
Maybe a popular jock kinda guy? I dunno, but he seems cool.
Matt:
Ok, I'm getting a goofball vibe, xD I like this guy. :)
Diana:
She seems really nice, I feel like she would just instantly be your friend.
Jake:
Hmm, I dunno how I feel about him yet.
Silver:
I REALLY wanna get to know this guy. He seems like he may be my kinda character. I hope he's introduced soon.

You've done a good job developing your characters. Congrats!

Other

Spoiler
I didn't notice any Jasmines :)

Typos/Grammar/Odd Sentences

Umm, I didn't notice any that hadn't been pointed out.

Overall, this is great!

I really love this, it was so interesting and I really want to read more of it. I didn't catch any "Jasmines" in the story but I will check again. I liked how you gave a little hint with the silly string and Aria cleaning it up and that whole thing. I agree that if everyone is at the table you should introduce Silver, unless Silver isn't there and it was a typo or I read it wrong. I hope you are writing more of this because I will definitely read it. Great story, even though like previous reviews said some wording is hard to understand or over-done. Keep writing like this!

When I first pick this I thought, "Why the title?" So I am here to find that answer and review for you guys.
Now, first and foremost.

She looked like a good person, but you never know who is who they seem to be or say they are.

'She looked like a good person, but you never know who a person seems to be or say they are.'
In my opinion, the way you guys had it, made it a little bit, more confusing than it needed to be.

I said in a whisper, yet loud enough to hear.

Again, in my opinion.

He had learned the hard way that Matt and I will not stop for “pedestrians.”

Love this line.

Hmmm....I think I like Zee, although I want to meet Silver first. Did he get introduced in this one? You guys said that 'everybody' sits at the table for dinner. Well it was more of we all than everybody but still, is he included with the 'We all'?
There was no Jasmine in the story so you guys have that probo cleaned up. Good job with that.
Nice little sneak peak of what Aria did with the silly string. It wasn't over done and that was just perfect. I have a feeling she won't faint though. Either way I'd want to know, so link me for when you guys post more. I liked this. So Keep at it.
Btw, I'm still keeping in mind on what the title means for the story.
