How do you forget something that has not yet happened?

I threw my arm in front of my face in an effort to block my eyes from the sudden light. Wilson gave me a smug kind of look, brining for a twinge of annoyance. It quickly dissipated however. How could I stay mad at someone who was about to die? Garren cursed behind me, rubbing his eyes and blinking furiously as salty tears built up. Emmany simply stared at the figure silhouetted in the door way, the glassy-dreamy look still in her eyes. My lips tugged down in a slight frown, but a small squeal from Laney brought me back to reality. Her ratted white wings fluttered against her back, her tiny hand curled around the door of her cell.

"Ty!" Her voice cracked with joy

The figure, presumably Ty, ran forward, staring at her through the bars. His mouth formed her name, tears shining in his eyes. The light cast half his face in shadows, his dark skin shinning with sweat. He had flashing blue eyes and long, wavy brown hair. He wore a slim black shirt, dark pants hugging his legs.

"Tyson." Wilson's silent voice rang through the dark air, vibrating around them.

Tyson turned to him, walking slowly to his brother's cell. "Told ya' I'd come." Tyson's voice was oddly soothing to my ears, like a trickling river or a gentle breeze.

Wilson nodded, crossing his arms. "That you did. But, brother, we are helping these folk as well. They have been wronged.

Tyson turned to us, his eyes locking with mine, sending a shiver down my spine. "Well," He said softly. "I guess I'd better get to work."

He walked back up the long isle, shutting the door and cutting the flow of light. Laney whimpered slightly as we were plunged into darkness, the glint of her pale eyes the only evidence of her existence. I looked silently to the adjoining wall, feeling once again frustrated that I could not properly comfort her.

"Shhhh." I said softly. "It'll be okay Laney."

Tyson's face reflected in the light from our cell as he began to pick on the lock on Wilson's cell. His hair fell forward to hide his face, his fingers working expertly on the lock. I turned and kneeled next to Emmany, brushing her hair from her eyes gently.

"Hey, hey Emmany. You gotta get up." I slipped my arm under her shoulder and lifted her up.

She groaned with protest, her head lolling against my shoulder. "Rae. I don't wanna." She whimpered.

Garren laid his hand on my arm gently, his topaz blue eyes locking with mine. "Rae," He said quietly. "Go to the gate. Wilson might need help with Laney."

"Garren..." I trailed off, trying to hide my struggle to keep Emmany on her feet.

His hand brushed against my shoulder as he took her from me, sending a whirlwind of emotions into my stomach. "Go." His voice was firm.

I nodded and hurried to the cell door, wishing Tyson would go faster. Finally I heard the ping as the door sprang open, the light surrounding Wilson dying slowly. He blinked quickly, surprise flashing across his face.  He walked towards our cell slowly, his eyes locked on mine.

"Don't move." His voice pinned me down, sending a chill throughout my body.

I stood sock still as he raised his hand, his palm facing towards me. A pressure filled my head as trails of a black, smoke-like substance leaked from his hand, spilling through his fingers and winding its way over his hands. The inky substance wound its way around the bars, the metal darkening to a fiery red where it touched. Wilson closed his eyes and bowed his head, his forehead creased in concentration. The pressure in my head in creased, the pain shooting down my spine and driving me to my knees. A numb ringing filled my ears, piercing my mind. Duly, I heard Garren call my name, felt strong arms pull me close as I held myself up. A crash filled the air and the pressure released its iron hold on my mind, throwing me hard into Garren's body. I leaned against him, dimly aware that Emmany was no longer in his arms. Shutting my eyes for a brief moment, I tried to calm the alarm that coerced through my veins. My body trembled down to the tips of my hair, my heart hammering against my rib cage. I felt Garren's hand wrap around my chin, forcing me to look up at him.

"Rae you need to get up!" Panic had filled his eyes.

Wilson was beside us then, his fingers wrapped around my forearm as he helped pulled me up. "Grab her."

I watched through dull eyes as Garren lifted Emmany into his arms, her dull wings dropping over his arms. Wilson through my arm over his neck, lopping his fingers in my side belt loop, holding me up.

"Don't know how you did what you did, girl," he grumbled as he helped me climb over the fallen cell door and into the isle way. "But I gotta say, you're one bad ass chick." A laugh escaped his throat.

"What I did...?" I gasped nothing the flutter of pale white wings beside me.

"Your energy connected with mine." He explained quickly and efficiently. "You made something that would have lasted ten minutes occur in less than two."

I pushed my feet to the floor, shoving Wilson away from me lightly. "Let me walk."

Wilson merely rolled his eyes and walked to the pale shape of Laney, scooping her up into her arms. I had barely enough time to ponder her escape. The next moment the door was thrown open and Akien charged in, the slender form of Lily at his side. Crap. I thought, trying to even out my stance. My eyes darted around the isle way, quickly estimating the time I would have before the attack would begin. 35 seconds.

"Wilson! I need you up here! Laney! To the back! Garren, set Emmany down somewhere safe and get up here." 20 seconds. " Tyson..." I trail off and look back at him. 5 seconds.

"I'll take the air." He said.

Times up. I watched, motionless, as Tyson spread a pair of raven-black wings, the feathers shinning a near-blue in the light. He leapt into the air, his wings fanning out behind him. The breath was ripped from my lungs as I received a hard kick to the ribs, sending me flying back into the wall. Akien stood over me, his eyes dark and radiant with fury. Garren was beside me in an instant, his heel diving into Akien's stomach. A yell of frustration escaped my mouth as I threw myself to my feet, tackling the Mutant around the center, throwing him to the ground. I screeched with pain as he dug a sharp knife into my thigh, blood welling up around the wound as I pressed my fingers to it.

"Rae!" Wilson's voice filled my head.

I stood against the wall, my eyes fixed on Akien. "Kind of busy here!"

"Rae come on! You need to go!" A slight tinge of anxiety was hidden underneath his voice.

I looked over my shoulder and saw Tyson holding Emmany up, her pale arm thrown about his dark neck. A dark portal stood behind them, the shadowed tentacles reaching for her even as they flickered and began to face.

"Rae I can't hold it much longer!"

Akien was advancing on me again. A growl sprang up into my throat and a drove my fist into his stomach, leaving a bloodied fist print. Throwing open my wings; I launched myself into the air, ignoring the warm trickle of blood that ran down my thigh and the pain that shot through my body. I pressed my wings to my back as I sped over the mutants, towards the portal, barreling into Garren. He held me steady as I turned back to the crowd of mutants, amazed by the work Wilson had done. A black mesh gate formed from the same shadowed particles stretched out behind us, holding back the crowed of Mutants. Laney clung to Wilson's leg, her body sticking out against his skin. He took her by the shoulders and shoved her away, throwing her ungracefully to Tyson.

"Ty! Get her out of here! I'll be right behind you!"

Tyson nodded and plunged into the shadows, Laney's hand grasped in his and Emmany's arm thrown over his shoulder.

"Now you!" Wilson snapped at me, sweat begging to shine on his forehead.

"Wilson please. It doesn't have to be like this." I pleaded.

Wilson ignored me and fixed his eyes on Garren's. "Do what you have too to take care of them."

Garren nodded, "I will."

He stepped forward and clapped Wilson on the shoulder, his hand lingering for a moment before he turned back to me.

"Rae we need to go."

"No!" I screamed. "I won't leave him!"

I saw the shoulder bones along Wilson's back stiffen and tighten beneath his shirt, saw him suck in his cheeks with frustration. With a grunt, Wilson grabbed my arms, shoving me forward into the darkness.

"Wilson!" I screamed, whipping around as the darkness began to envelope me.

Garren plunged in after me, his hand finding mine in the dark. Weather to comfort me or to keep me by his side, I did not know. His fingers wrapped tight around mine, his eyes forced shut and his chest rising and falling rapidly with his inscrease in breath. My eyes locked one last time with Wilson's as he began to fade into blackness, a triumphant look upon his handsome features. He smiled slightly, nodding to me as he released the gate, sending Akien, Lily and the rest of the Mutants reeling forward. He called out to me one last time.

"Remember your promise."

Then the world went black once more.

This time I welcome the dark.

Hi! Happy September Review Day! - Billie here

Okay so I really, really love this story. Your attention to detail and emotion is really epic. I love reading stories that make me feel emotion and yours did just that. You structure and content was absolutely perfect and blended in a well-written way. Your characters were well developed and had their own unique voice and attitude. I didn't read anything wrong with your grammar or punctuation so I think your good in that area.

So, in conclusion I think you did really good! I hope you keep up the good work!!!

Your epic emphasis on detail and emotion is absolutely perfect! As a reader who completely enjoys a good novel now and again, I know what a good novel takes. Girl, you have got that special talent all great writers need! I really do hope I get to read more of your work :) You definitely give your characters personality. Rae seems to be extremely brave and stubborn, and not so able to connect with her energy considering she completely wiped herself out when helping to get through the steel rods. You have a good sense of mysteriousness by the end of your piece, and it really leaves me wanting more! Your grammar, spelling, and punctuation seem to all be in check. And the way your words flow creating imagery and epic emotion and feel for the story is exquisite. Your fluency is great! Well keep writing! And great luck!

ps) Really hoping all goes well for Rae too, since she just leaped into a hole of darkness afterall

Thank you! :)

People say I love you all the time - when they say, ‘take an umbrella, it’s raining,’ or ‘hurry back,’ or even ‘watch out, you’ll break your neck.’ There are hundreds of ways of wording it - you just have to listen for it, my dear.
