Back in the days of ancient magic and powerful wizards, a large battle took place, destroying the very fabric of magic from the world. The very history of magic was long forgotten, until a few hundred years later, a man named Markus Rander ventured into a private catacomb, in the land of Tirren, and discovered that one source of magic remained. Unaware of the consequences, he was overtaken by his desire for power and released the magic called “Spirit” onto the world. With a little research, he realized that this magic is the most powerful ever discovered and is the very roots magic was built upon. The magic called “Spirit” is now roaming the world looking for its first prey. Markus now knows “Spirit” is like no other magic; it has a soul and needs to find the right person to manipulate its energy and power in order to control it. Spirit has chosen the most unsuspected person to trust with the most power ever created. It must find the boy, Stephan, to host and harness the power before someone else discovers who this soon-to-be-powerful boy is, and take the magic for themselves. Spirit's plan is to start and finish the war that never truly ended hundreds of years ago, in the hope of bringing peace into the world and finally to be laid to rest. Now that magic has once again been brought into the land of the living, what effects will this have on mankind? Will this boy fight against the evil that is brewing or join forces with the tyrant who seeks to destroy anyone who will oppose him? The human race faces extinction, and magic will destroy it unless stopped. New and evil things will arise out of the darkness without notice and will cover all the light that floods the earth. If all else fails and evil magic finds the young boy, there will be no one to stand and fight the corrupt power that is taking over the world. Will there be hope left in mankind, or will the human race, as we know it, be brought to its destruction?
Chapter 1
At a time of forgotten magic and the story begins in a place where peace and tranquility thrive, but something sinister lies in the darkness waiting to be released. High over the mountains in a valley called Tirren a discovery of something thought extinct caused the start of the Great War. A man named Marcus Rander discovered something ancient magic deep within a secluded mountain in a private catacomb, in the very heart and center of the valley. There laid the most radiant source of power and energy that his mind could fathom. It seemed to arc out of the stone that lay in the farthest part of the catacomb. It was blue as the ocean, hot as lava, and it was so intense that it lashed at the walls like lightening as though it was trying to escape it’s prison. Magic seemed to eminate from it’s core.
Markus did not know that there was magic left in the world or that this was the last of its kind. Little did he know that finding this power would change the course of the future. Everyone thought this line of power was long extinct. He only heard stories of this kind of ancient wizardry through reading old books found in the town’s library.
He soon realized that this was magic. He did not understand how to harness or control it, but if tampered with, it could level an entire mountain, but his desire for power and authority overwhelmed him so he pushed aside any caution. He began doing studying ies on this energy source. He spent hours, days, even weeks searching for answers in old books that would tell him more about what he had found. He wanted to understanding how to bend it to his willcontrol and harness even though his investigation told him it was this so called “uncontrollable” magic. He spent hours, days, even weeks searching for answers in old books that would tell him more about what he had found. His compulsioninterest started to corrupt him; it started to make him go almost insane with such lust. He needed this powerful magic; he demanded it.
Markus spent less and less time in town socializing with people and was drawn to spend even more time in the catacomb. Marcus was a loved, and respected elder of the town. His strange behavior was drawing in attention from the town’s men. People were wondering where he was going.
He debated about bringing his discovery to the town board of elders, but the people of the town would shun him and cast him away forever if they knew he had been tampering with the most powerful magic ever created. Life was peaceful without magic. Why would anyone embrace this and bring about an unpredictable future that once almost destroyed life?
One warm beautiful autumn afternoon, while he was researching in the library, Markus came across a book called Triton. He read a section of the book, which explained that the ancient power was called Spirit and it isn’t evil, but a person can become overtaken by it if they don’t understand how to control it. If someone does not understand the robust magic he is trying to control, it will surely destroy him.
Gaining an understanding of Spirit allows you to be one with the power and it becomes your lifeline. It roots itself into who you are in the present and who you will become in the future. It builds an interconnection with your very soul. Spirit burrows itself into the very core of your being and will forever leave a print of magic in your heart.
One day, while studying the magic, Markus started to experience strange feelings throughout his body. He intended on using stone platters to move the magic to a table where he could get a detailed look it. But before he could do that, he dropped one of the stone platters, and his fingertip touched the blue magic. He felt an intense heat, and suddenly a wave of fire blue energy penetrated through him bringing him to his knees. The pain almost rendered him unconscious. His very soul was being stripped from him. He felt as though he was losing a battle for his life. Marcus understood that there was nothing he could do to take charge of this supernatural power.
Markus knew the connection that the magic builds with the individual must be instant or there is no relationship nor place it can rest in their soul. The magic had rejected him, and all at once, Markus felt dark and cold. The pain was gone for an instant, allowing Marcus to take a deep breath and release the pressure building in his head. With a flash of light and thunder, the blue fire struck Marcus again straight in the chest with shocking power, which threw him against the hard rock. Forcing his eyes open his vision was blurred. He couldn’t focus on making his legs work. Sweat beaded on his forehead, his breathing was heavy, and he was unable to calm his heart. Markus put his hand on his chest, hoping the pain would stop. He was confused as to what was causing such affliction. He used what strength he had left to roll onto his side, pushing his lethargic body off the dirty floor. Very dizzy, and disoriented he finally noticed a small light in the distance. Thinking he might find help outside the catacomb, he started to crawl toward the light, not knowing if he was going to live or die. Markus slowly began to get closer and closer to the light.
He was able to see blue veins starting to form under his skin on his hands. His body started to get hot and clammy and he thought he was going to lose consciousness. Nothing made sense to him. It was all too fast and Markus couldn’t understand what had gone wrong. His head started to pound in his ears; he could hear his own heart beat.
“What is happening to me?”
Markus cried out loud. Fear gripped him, as he got closer to the light because the pain was getting worse. He knew he had to get outside, into the fresh air. Then, a memory that had eluded him during the initial encounter with Spirit suddenly came to him. Markus recalled reading in a book that said if anyone was to encounter this magic not to attempt to harness it because Spirit must choose the living soul that is to temple its power. The person cannot choose to control Spirit.
In the book Triton, Spirit is considered an object of life. It has its own mind and judgement, and only Spirit will decide if a person is suitable to contain its power. Markus wondered why Spirit did not choose him to temple its power, but he could not come to a conclusion. Thinking about this made his head hurt even more. All he wanted was to get outside and try to figure this all out.

Here is the kicker, Markus is actually not the main character... he plays a vital role in the development of the main character, which you find out very soon. The story is meant to keep you on edge until the very last moment when everything is revealed and you get the "Oh I get it!" moment.
Dun dun dun!!!!!!! Oooooo what's going to happen? I can't wait to read more! So far so good.
I have always been told never judge a book by its cover. It is quite cliché but it still works. My novel is very different from all the other sifi, fantasy adventure books. I hope it will intrigue all of you. I worked very hard on trying to make it as different as possible, in the hope of keeping my readers interested and wanting more.
When I saw that you wrote more I was intrigued. I love books like these, with things like "spirits" and wizard and such. I think you use "Markus" a little too much. Maybe you could substitute it with: "he". Just a suggestion. This is a great idea and hope to read more!
I had a lord of the rings feeling going on throughout reading this. The prologue makes it sound like just another fiction. I would certainly hope that your literary style will introduce the desired style into the story that will make it stand out. Not a big fan of fiction unless it is a bit different because there's too much of it around us now a days anyway. So pretty please try to make it a bit unique, yeah? The words like 'Markus', 'spirit', 'Stephan' just add to that ordinary feeling. Introduce your own ideas. Hah sorry, but I can not stress this enough.
Hopefully you will come up with something that is not just another wannabe epic. Best of luck with it friend. Cheers
seems promising. A good prologue that it. it summarizes or rather gives a glimpse of what awaits further in the story. I hope to read the full story soon. keep it up!
This was obviously a prologue, but that's good! I've seen other prologue a where its like a chapter. I would like to here more and I love the title. That was what brought me here. I love fantasy books and such so this could be perfect for me. I hope to hear more about this wonderful idea.
Hmm, instresting way of starting off your novel. This must be the prolgue, I assume. Well, keep me posted. The title is good and that's always a good start! I used to attempt novels myself and I'll tell you this:
They take a lot of disipline, time, and creativity.
Good Luck my friend!
This is a good, prologue. It gets to the point and leaves the reader eager to read more. You also introduce the main character and give us an idea as to what is going to happen.
However, I would have personally done a large battle scene as the prologue, including the destruction of the magic. Also, you could have given us a slight hint as to the fact there is still a magic source in a very dramatic way, and THEN done the first chapter that would introduce the main character and have them discover the magic source. This is what I would do, but that is me.
This was well written and there was good grammer and gave us a vivd image of the past. Well done and keep writitng.
Very interesting. Obviously there will be a story, correct?
