For Everly: Chapter 3: Family

The floor tiles turn to sand, and the ceiling melts away to reveal a perfect powder-blue sky. Mama sits beneath an umbrella, sunglasses perched on her head. Dad builds a sandcastle with seven-year-old Everly as a two-year-old James splashes in a little blow-up pool nearby. The Florida sun dries the tears on my face.

"This was the last vacation we took," I say, "before Dad died." The smell of salt water on the breath of wind takes me back and I actually smile.

I'm surprised when I see Peter, another Peter, sitting near the younger me. Peter has been in my family for four generations, helping us pretend as children, helping us cope as adults, and everything in between.

"I could stay here forever," I say, tilting my face to the afternoon sun. Peter takes my hand and nods.

"Me too." I grin at him and he smiles at the sand between his toes.

"We used to go here every summer," I say, the reminiscing bringing forth a hundred emotions. "James and I would wake up early to play video games, and Mama would cook eggs and toast but not bacon, because she thought bacon was what helped cause Dad's heart attack." The words stop making sense to me after that, even though I continue talking for several minutes. Peter nods and adds his own memories.

"I tagged along for one trip," he explains, gesturing to himself. "I've never had a family until yours, Everly."

We pause.

"I'm so sorry, Peter."

"Why?" Little James splashes Little Everly and Little Everly starts to cry.

"That you have to watch my family go through everything," I say. "You suffer with us, but you don't have to."

Peter takes both of my hands and looks me square in the face. Suddenly, nothing exists except me and Peter, and nothing matters except the moment we're in.

"I chose to watch over your family," says Peter, as something beautiful happens in his eyes. "It's my duty now and I love every second of it..." His voice trails, wanders, and comes back. "...my only regret is that I haven't been with you longer," he finishes.

I nod, trying to grasp that there could be people like Peter, who are willing to sacrifice their happiness for their adopted family. I stand on the edge of the shoreline and spread my arms to hug the world, the way I used to when I was Little Everly. I hear Peter snap his fingers behind me.

Hi there!

Dad builds a sandcastle with seven-year-old Everly

So you're writing this in first person. But this right here is written in third person. Now, I know it's a bit harder since it's a memory. However, you still have to keep up the first person POV. I think it'll work well if you just replace 'Everly' with 'me'. That'll also help remind us that Everly is watching all of these memories. I mean, we already know that, but it's a nice little reminder.

So, has Everly found her happy memory here? I'm guessing she hasn't since Peter snaps his fingers which means they're going to another memory. But he doesn't even ask her if this is her happy memory. He asks her in the last chapter, so I feel like he should ask her here too. What if this is her happy memory and they just passed it by? Just something I was left wondering about at the end of this chapter.

I think it's wonderful how caring Peter is. He's not just a boy; he's a boy with a heart, and feelings. You know what I mean by that. Boys are "taught" to not show emotion and never cry and blahbitty, blah, blah. Yet here Peter is, being completely open with Everly and sharing his emotions and memories with her as well.

Oh, I just thought of this. Everly says that Peter has been with their family for four generations. Does he age outside of Neverland? I mean, I'm sure that he only comes to visit them for periods of time, not long enough to age more than a few minutes. It's something I've been wondering about though. Does being out here with Everly's family affect him at all? Is he risking anything coming to visit them?

Your writing is superb once again and I couldn't find and grammar or spelling errors. There is that huge gap between paragraphs up there, but I think it's just YWS messing with the formatting. Everything flows really well and the story is moving along great. Keep up the good work!

Keep writing!

I'm still in love with this story. I just have to say that the next step for you would have to be details. I don't know what age range you want your story to be, but even little kids want to know the interesting stuff. Add what's going on a little more with the surroundings.

Plus, there are a few grammar things I found:

"...seven-year-old Everly..." Would you rather say, "...seven-year-old me since this story is in Everly's POV?

"Me, too." I grin at him, and he smiles at the sand in between his toes."

Don't forget to mention who is speaking, the younger Everly or the present one.

"Little James splashes Little Me, and Little Me starts to cry."

Hey! IamTraunt here to review!

Nitpick!

I think you accidently put two spaces for a paragraph here:

"I tagged along for one trip," he explains, gesturing to himself. "I've never had a family until yours, Everly."
.
We pause.

Characters!

I love flashbacks/memories, it makes me feel warm and fuzzy - you really are opening up and inciting us into Evelyn's past happiness, which is a very nice touch. We can really see what a haply family they were when they were whole. They did normal family things, had fun together and was what I said - a family. You portrayed this really well!
You do makes me feel really sorry for Peter though, as he has to endure and cope with the family trials, you could say he has 'adopted' their feelings and had to carry on through to the end.

Storyline!

Its really sad, and yet sweet at the same time. You show the gentle side to Peter, how he cares for the family, that is why he tries to cheer Evelyn up by taking her to the happiest memories he can find. Its so nice how he takes the time and effort to do these things for the family - which relates back to the old story of Peter Pan. He obviously cares a lot by the way you describe things and how you make him act. I like the whole concept of how Peter is trying to help Evelyn, he always had a soft spot for the girls <3

Good job! See you soon ;)

Another magnificent chapter. I must say the more I read your work the more i feel like you're a published author or something. But never mind that. Back to the story.
I love the character development going on here. And Peter's character is so mysterious and intriguing. I would have like to see a bit more of the memory though. Maybe describe the emotions she was feeling a bit more? I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the way it is. But you could always make it better, right?
That's me signing off!
Let me know when you post the next chapter!
