I believe that the film was entertaining and engaging due to the amount of tension it contained. The tension was created throughout all scenes in various different ways. The costumes used linked to the atmosphere of the movie and the characters personalities. The dark colours in their costumes linked to the character they portrayed and the suspicion of the film. For example, Heath Ledger who plays the Joker uses the effect of his makeup to create a jolly yet sadistic look and feel to his character. With a scarred smile etched on a face caked in crudely- painted clown makeup, he gives the movie a mysterious side to it.
Batman/Bruce Wayne, played by Christian Bale, are the typical ‘hero’ of the movie, playing two identities. He portrays a sort of James Bond feel, as he is always surrounded by women and wearing suits to show his importance. His Batman costume is dark and hides who he really is, adding more anonymity to the movie. His costumes are all dark and his voice is low, adding tension. However, the look of some characters such as Two Face was not fully physically doable and so the use of Photoshop was needed to create gory, mangled visage when he is burned. The use of Photoshop helps to make things look more realistic and emphasize the point they try to put across.
Secrecy and action is also shown through the use of effects and sounds. ‘Typically, these films will have between 1,000 and 2,000 effects shots. We have about 650 visual effects shots, a lot of which are simple rig removals or things we can’t achieve for reasons of cost or safety. We really blew up everything we could in the film,” Christopher Nolan notes. “When you’re dealing with an anarchist, somebody who is dedicated to chaos, the movie visceral way of representing that is an explosion.” The director is a unique director for whom bigger scale, larger budget, and more polished state-of-the-art special effects translate into all-around better picture.
The script and dialogue of the movie is very well thought out. Batman’s voice is lowered to sound more mysterious and to also hide his identity. The Joker’s voice is very clown-like yet has a violent side to it. His choice of words are very manipulating and can be taken in different ways yet we see when he is threatened that he can get scared easy. They speak very sophisticatedly so show authority and they’re society class. The pace of their dialogue speeds up when the action increases too, so the pace of their dialogue shows the pace of the movie.
Overall, I believe the movie was very well put together and everything was taken into consideration. The mystery and action worked well together and I would thoroughly recommended this movie to all ages.
