No Key To Her Past

By: Katie Swinford

Dedications and Thanks:

First and foremost this story is dedicated to my cousin Victoria Richards. Who died on April 2, 2009 in a car accident. This story was started originally on April 6, 2009. She was my best friend and editor. Each time I write I feel like she is sitting there beside me helping me. So I will always have part of her with me. I just want to say I miss you Vicki. I will always miss you.

Secondly I would like to thank all of my family. I do not know how many times they have supported me in all my endeavors.

Thirdly I would like to thank all my friends. They are so often my muses. The best muses in the world I think personally. Also I would like to thank all of them for the multiple times I have bounced ideas off them and or all the times they have read through my many drafts.

Chapter 1

Victoria was sitting in the Parlor for tea. She was listening to her parents and brother talk. It was mostly Politics and about her brother’s schooling. After a time she asked to leave and take a walk. Her parents said she could, but to stay near the house because town had become dangerous since the south had suceeded from the union. She promised that she would and went outside. She enjoyed her walk until she saw a group of men start towards her. They must have been lost. So she calmly began walking back to the house. However the men followed her. She had no chance of outrunning them in all her skirts. So of course they eventually caught up to her. Somehow they dragged her into an alley in town. Once in the alley they demanded all her jewelry.

I do not have any jewelry or money.” She said very scared. One of the men stepped closer to her.

Don’t lie to us now. We would hate to have to hurt you.” He said. Suddenly Victoria realized that they were drunk and most likely had no idea what they were doing. Before she knew it the man had her backed up against the wall. “Well now since you don’t have anything for us we’ll just have to find something else to do with you.” The man laughed evilly. As the men closed in around her she heard footsteps. It was a long shot, but she screamed at the top of her lungs.

Help. Please help me.” She yelled twice before one of the men covered her mouth. The footsteps quickened. Someone had heard her. Just as one of the men started to lift her skirt up to her thigh she heard someone yell.

Let her go.” It said. It was defiantly male. The men pushed her away all except for one that is. He persisted and kept trying to force himself upon her. He took out a knife to try to cut open her dress but being drunk and he missed and stabbed her just in between two of her ribs. Then he dropped her when she screamed in pain. She felt her head hit something hard. She also felt something warm flow from her head. After that her vision blurred. Before she knew it everything was silent and she saw a man standing over her. Victoria tried to pull away.

It is alright. I’m not going to hurt you.” The man said. Victoria decided to trust him. She didn’t know why but she did. Maybe it was because she didn’t smell any liquor on his breath like she had on the other men. Or maybe it was because she could hear true concern in his voice as her tore off part of her skirt and tied it around her stomach and another around her head. “You have lost a lot of blood. This will help to slow it and give you time to be cared for.” He said this slowly making sure she understood. She nodded to show she did. Then he picked her up and carried her away. She must have fallen unconscious because when she woke up she had no idea where she was. She was in an unfamiliar house lying in bed. She looked around and saw light shining through the door frame around the door which stood slightly open. She wrapped a blanket around her waist and stood up and walked across into the next room. However she stopped in the door when she saw a man standing there. She gasped. She was only in a work shirt that must belong to him. The man just turned around and looked at her casually.

Are you felling any better?” He asked as he chopped up some vegetables and put them into a pot atop the fire.

Excuse me, but do I know you?” She asked. The man laughed.

No not really. I helped you yesterday. What is your name?” The man asked.

I don’t remember.” She admitted a little surprised.

Well I know your first name is Victoria. You told me that yesterday. However you did not tell me a sir name.” He said. He then wiped his hands off on a towel that was lying nearby. “Come here would you? We need to check your wound.” He said. As he took a step towards her she stepped back.

Where is the wound?” She asked. He winced a little.

You were stabbed in your right side and hit your head. Do not worry though. I will not hurt you.” He said. This time she did not draw back when he stepped towards her. As he lifted her shirt to take off the bandages he talked to her. “My name is Simon by the way. Simon Smith. I am the local blacksmith.” He said. After the bandages were changed he stood up. “Are you hungry?” He asked.

Yes. Thank you.” She said as she pushed some hair behind her left ear. He led her to the table and helped her into her seat. Then he gave her some of the soup that had been cooking and some water to drink. As she sat there eating she watched him tend the fire after he had eaten. As she did she noticed how handsome he was. He had blond hair and hazel eyes. He was very handsome indeed. “What exactly happened yesterday?” She asked cautiously.

Well I don’t know what happened before, but I was walking home from the forge and I heard you scream for help. As I came around the corner one of the men stabbed you. I think they were drunk. Do you have any idea what they would have done to you if I had not come by?” He asked. She just said nothing and eventually shook her head no. “They would have taken your innocence, and that is saying it bluntly.” He said growing angry.  Victoria gasped in shock.

Why would they do that?” She asked frightened. Simon shrugged.

I have no idea. They must have been drunk, and they must have found you beautiful.” He said. Then he grinned. “I can see how they could find you attractive. You are very lovely.” He admitted flashing a charming smile.  At this Victoria blushed. He was flirting. Suddenly Simon stood up. “Would you like to get dressed.” He asked.

I don’t have a dress.” She replied.

Well your other was ruined. However I do have some that were my sister’s before she died. They might fit you.” He offered.

How did she die?” Victoria asked caringly.

She died of consumption.” He said. Victoria looked at him oddly. Simon laughed. “What is that look for? You do not need to worry. They have all been washed since then.” He said assuring her. Then he took her to a trunk in the corner of the room. After moving what must have been his clothes out of the way Victoria saw some simple work dresses. She reached in and picked up a light blue one. It looked to be a good fit. “Blue suits you.” He said. Victoria blushed again. “Your corset is on the table in the bedroom.” He said. Victoria laughed.

What is the point? I have no idea how to put it on.” She said. Then she suddenly realized that he must have changed her out of her ruined clothes and put her in new ones.

Very well, if that is what you wish to do.” He said shrugging. So Victoria took the dress into the bedroom. Once she had it on she was surprised to find that the dress fit her even without the corset. However she decided to wear the corset anyway in the end. After she had figured the corset out and put the dress back on she stepped out into the main room.

What do you think?” She asked.

Nice. I need to go to the forge. Would you like to come with me?” Simon asked.

That would be delightful.” Victoria said. So Simon took her to the forge and showed her all the tools and explained what they did. He even let her help him forge one of the horse shoes he was working on.

You are a natural.” He complemented. Suddenly they heard the door open behind them. Simon took his hands off of hers. When she turned around she saw a woman standing there. Simon went off and talked to the woman. Eventually they both came over to her. Simon introduced them. “Victoria this is my mother. Mother this is Victoria. She will be staying with me for a while.” He said. The woman looked concerned towards Victoria.

You poor dear. Simon told me what happened to you. You must have been very frightened. I hope you are feeling better. I saw your injuries when I changed you out of your clothes last night.” Simon’s mother said.

Actually I do not remember anything from that night. However the thought of what could have happened with those men does frighten me. It scares me just from what little Simon told me about what happened.” Victoria said.

That I could have guessed.” Mrs. Smith said. “What is your sir name by the by?” She continued.

She can’t remember.” Simon said.

Do you remember anything?” Mrs. Smith asked.

Like Simon said I do not remember anything.” Victoria said. Suddenly Victoria remembered a house. It was large and elegant. “Wait, I do remember something. I remember a house. It was very elegant. I do not remember where it is though.” Victoria said then pausing. Simon sighed and ran his hand over his face and then through his hair.

Well it is a start. Do you think you could point it out if you saw it?” Simon asked

I believe so.” Victoria said.

Then we will go out to start looking for it tomorrow morning. However for now I need to get back to work.” Simon said. After his mother left they went back to work. It was late by the time they got home. Simon took the floor while Victoria took the bedroom.

Chapter 2

When they left the next morning to look for the house they had no success. It was the same for the next week. Even with them searching every other day. Each day they grew closer. After all how could they not when they lived in the same house. It was not long before she did not even flinch when Simon cleaned her wound. She trusted him. On one such occasion Victoria stopped Simon while he was cleaning her wound. He looked up at her from being on his knees.

“Simon do you really think we’ll ever find my family? We have been looking for weeks and still haven’t found anything.” She asked.

I have no idea. I hope we do though. On the other hand that house could be anywhere. If it is in town I promise you we will find it.” He assured her. She smiled down at him.

Really?” She asked as she bit her lower lip. He nodded. “Oh thank you.” She said as she pulled him up off the floor to be able to hug him. He just stood there a moment before putting his arms around her. They just stood a moment. Then Simon pulled away.

Victoria there is a ball at the end of this week and I was wondering if you would like to go with me?” Simon asked.

That would be wonderful.” She said smiling. “Perhaps I could even remember some of the dances.” She said.

Well I am not very good at them, but I could teach you a little bit.” He offered. So she took his hands and he started to teach her a waltz. “1-2-3 1-2-3.” Simon said then he started humming a tune. She looked up at him.

What is that song? It sounds familiar.” Victoria asked.

It is Beethoven’s 9th symphony. Does it remind you of anything?” He asked.

It reminds me of something. I can’t remember what though.” She said. Then suddenly Simon felt her fingers on his shoulders start to move. Separate, yet together at the same time. As if she was playing the Piano. Simon laughed. “What?” Victoria asked stopping.

You must have played the piano. You must have been good to remember the fingerings subconsciously.” Simon said. Victoria took her hands off his shoulders.

Simon, I have no idea. I can’t remember anything. I am starting to think we will never find my family. It has been a month and all I can remember is that house. I…” then suddenly she started crying. She couldn’t stop herself. He held her close and comforted her. She clung to him. After a minute or so she pulled away. “I am sorry it is just I am so scared that we will never find my family.” She explained and she wiped the tears from her face. Simon just stood there looking at her.

It will be fine, and I promise you that if I have anything to do about it we will find your family.” He said before he continued he wiped a tear off her cheek. “It is getting late. Maybe we should get some sleep.” He suggested. She just nodded and walked towards the bedroom. When she reached the door she looked back and saw Simon laying a blanket out on the floor. She suddenly realized that for the past month Simon had been sleeping on the floor. Therefore allowing Victoria to take his bed. After realizing this she felt guilty. He looked up and saw her watching him. “Is there a problem?” He asked stopping and standing up. Victoria blushed slightly.

I just feel guilty. For the past month you have been sleeping on the floor while I slept in your bed. I will take the floor tonight.” She said.

No. I will not hear of it. You are my guest. Therefore you get the bed.” Simon insisted.

I can’t. I just realized how much of a burden I have been to you.” She said. Tears came to her eyes again. She just wiped them away. Simon stepped forward and took her by the arms.

Victoria look at me. You have never, nor ever will be a burden towards me.” He said. He pulled her head up and had her look at him. “No matter what happens or who you turn out to be. If you ever need anything. You are always welcome here.” He said. This made her smile. He let go of her. “That was foolish of me. When you find out who you are you will not even think of me again.” Then he looked down at the floor. Until he felt Victoria’s hand on his arm.

Simon, I will never forget what you did for me. You took me in when others would have cared less about what happened to me.  You have let me live with you for a month. You rescued me and I am forever in debt to you.” She said. She ran her hand across his cheek. Before she knew what she was doing she placed her lips on his. For a moment nothing happened. Then she felt Simon’s arms wrap around her as he began to kiss her back. After a minute or two the kiss started to grow more urgent, and when she felt Simon tighten his grip around her waist she held on to him even tighter. Then he pulled back. Victoria grabbed hold of his shirt and pulled it over his head and threw it over towards the table. Simon undid the first two buttons of her dress revealing her throat and some cleavage. He kissed her again and she clung to him running a hand through his hair as he started trailing kisses down her throat. Then he suddenly stopped just before planting a kiss right on her cleavage, his hand on the next button. They were both already short of breath.

Victoria we can’t. Believe me I want to, but it would not be right. You are a lady.” He said as he ran a hand across her cheek. “It would not be proper.” He continued kissing her on the head.

I know. I don't know what got into me. I guess I just wanted to see what it was like following my heart instead of my mind for once. Good Night Simon.” She said. Then she went to the bedroom and dressed in the work shirt she had worn when they had first met that only went to her mid thigh. She left the two or three top buttons undone. She lay down in bed however she could not sleep so she opened the door and looked into the other room. Expecting to find Simon asleep, but he was not. She just stood in the doorway and watched him for a while before coming out. “So you can not sleep either.” She asked. He looked up at her. He was lying on his back with his hands behind his head.

No I can’t.” He laughed. He got up and they both sat down at the table. Victoria did not notice he didn’t have his shirt on until he reached for it across the table. She began to blush at the memory of how they had shared that kiss. She did not notice how cold it was in the room now that the fire had gone out until she started to shiver. Simon got up and handed her his blanket. “You are cold. Take my blanket for now.” He said holding it out to her. She shook her head and smiled, but he insisted.

No Simon. That is your Blanket. I’ll be fine” She said, but Simon would not take no for an answer. So she allowed him to put it across her shoulders and her heart leapt when his hand brushed her breasts by accident as it had when he had undid the buttons on her dress. Victoria kept remembering how good it had felt when Simon’s arms had finally wrapped around her when they had started to kiss. She had felt very safe there with him. She also wondered if he wished to kiss her again. Then She kept thinking about someone saying. “A Gentleman only kisses a lady’s hand.” She did not know why, but she was sure it was her mother’s voice. Suddenly it all came flowing back to her. Her name was Victoria Moore. Her family was well off and the worst thing was that by the end of the year she was supposed to marry a gentleman from another well off family that she had never even met. She stood up and went and grabbed Simon’s arm. “Simon I remember everything.” She rushed. Simon jumped up about to go to her. “Simon. I’m Victoria Moore. My father is a successful lawyer and I just know my parents will never let me come back to see you.” Victoria said as she was about to start crying at the thought of loosing him forever. Simon’s smile turned to a frown and he froze in his tracks.

Victoria. I… The last month has been so amazing. I really don’t know how to say this, but” Simon sighed. “I have to take you home though.” He said sounding like he was saying it more to himself then to her. Victoria could not handle it any longer. It felt so much like goodbye already. She ran into her room dropping Simon’s blanket along the way. As she did she heard Simon mumbling. “I know I should not have gotten close to her. I knew it couldn’t last.” Later when she opened the door again Simon was asleep his hair tousled from sleep. So she silently walked across the room and lifted up the blanket Simon was lying under and curled up next to him. She felt his arm wrap around her waist and she felt safe again and cuddled closer to him. She was so tired she fell asleep next to him.

Chapter 3

The next morning she woke up to yelling.

Let me kill him.” A familiar voice called. It was her brother. He was going to try to hurt Simon. She was still half asleep, but she knew she had to stop this. So she forced herself to sit up and open her eyes. What she saw terrified her. Her father holding back her brother and Simon standing there rigid as a statue.

What is going on?” She yelled in a frightened voice. Everyone turned to look at her.

Well your brother thinks I have taken advantage of you.” Simon said holding out a hand to her and helping her up. She immediately looked over at her brother. Her brother and father were both shocked at how much of her was seen in Simon’s shirt. She must have missed something because the noticed both Simon and her brother looked worn out. Her father let go of Jonathon.

Jonathon Moore. You should be ashamed, accusing Simon of such a things.” Victoria said scolding her older brother as she wrapped the blanket around her waist.

Well I would like to point out that you are the one lying on the floor in a stranger’s house scantly clad with a strange man. You have been missing for a month.” Jonathon said defensively his voice turning to concern at the end of the statement. Then she suddenly understood that her brother must have been walking by and saw her and Simon thorough the window.

Papa.” She said walking over to him and putting her hand on his arm. “Simon saved me from some drunken men who were attacking me. I did not remember who I was until last night. He would never dream of harming me in any way.” Victoria said comforting him.

Victoria come with us.” Jonathon said motioning her to come to him. Victoria took a step back.

No! I will not leave until you apologize to Simon.” Victoria said firmly for once defying an order.

What did you just say to me?” Jonathon said.

You heard me. All my life you have told me what to do. Growing up you made me think I could not think for myself. Not any more. Simon kept me safe and you are insulting him and that is not going to happen as long as I’m here. You should be thanking him instead of accusing him. Now if you want me to come home you better apologize. I’m waiting.” Victoria said as she went to stand beside Simon.

You would really put this man before your family?” Jonathon asked shocked.

I am simply suggesting that you act like the college student you are instead of acting like an 8 year old child.” Victoria said trying not to get angry. Their father decided to step in.

Now children. Victoria calm down and Jonathon is it really so hard to admit you were wrong so that your sister will come home?” Their father said smiling slightly. Then he went over to Simon his face turning stern. “Tell me the truth did you or did you not during the last month take advantage of my daughter?” He asked Simon.

No! I would never do anything to hurt her. I care about her very much.” Simon said.

Still, my son and I both saw you and my daughter lying together. How do you explain that?” He asked. Victoria stepped closer to her father.

That would be my fault. After Simon went to bed I came out of the bedroom and lay down beside him and ended up falling asleep.” She explained

Then why did we see him kiss you on the mouth while you were asleep and you sigh in your sleep.” Jonathon asked. Simon and Victoria both blushed.

That was my fault. Mr. Moore I would like to get to know the rest of your family as well as I have gotten to know Victoria.” Simon asked.

Hopefully not in the same way.” Jonathon said under his breath.

You may. Only please keep your mind appropriate when thinking about my daughter please.” He said. Simon nodded. After Victoria got dressed all four of them walked back to the house together. Victoria went upstairs and ran to hug her mother who was sitting in her room.

Victoria. How could you do that to us? Making us worry like that.” Her mother asked worried. So Victoria explained what all had happened only leaving out the whole shirt thing. “I am just so glad you are home.” Her mother said. Her mother helped Victoria into a morning gown. “Just do one thing for me ok. Please keep that boy out of your room. Remember you are supposed to be getting married.” Her mother said.

It is not fair.” Victoria said.

I know, but you did say you would marry Mr. Johnson and you have to keep to your word.” Her mother said understandingly. So Victoria gave her mother one last hug and went to go down stairs being alone with her thoughts. They were interrupted however by her name being called. She looked up and it was Simon. He was on the landing step below her. Victoria practically flew down the landing above. A large smile spread across both of their faces. Victoria started to laugh.

What is so funny?” Simon asked.

Just having you here makes me happy. Just yesterday I was wondering if we would ever find my family.” She said smiling. Just then a servant walked by. After that Simon leaned in towards her. Then he whispered this into her left ear.

I have to go to the forge and do some work. I will come back though.” Then he kissed her hand. Victoria laughed again. At the same time it also made her heart soar.

You do not have to be so formal with me. We have lived in the same house for the past month.” She laughed. Simon took her hand and led her into a little side room.

I know. It is just that I am afraid that everything I do will be told to your family. I do not want them to think ill of me.” He explained.

Even if they do I never will.” Victoria confessed smiling.

Well I have every intention of marrying you and I can not do that if your family does not approve of me.” He said smiling.

About that.” She said nervously. Simon looked at her now concerned.

What is it?” He asked putting a hand on each of her arms. She took a deep breath before continuing.

I’m engaged. I have never even met the man. His name it James Johnson. My father arranged it when I was a young girl. You know if I could marry you that I would. You know I would. I love you Simon.” She said as tears welled up in her eyes at the realization that she could truly never be with him. She tried to kiss him but he took a step back.

This just keeps getting better. Your family was not a problem, but now you’re engaged. I think it is best I leave. I think it would be easier for both of us that way.” He said then he tried to leave obviously irritated. However Victoria stopped him by grabbing his arm.

So that is the end of it. You are just giving up on us.” she said as she started to cry, realizing that this could very well be the final time she ever saw him. Simon turned around and took her into his arms and kissed her before he knew what he was doing..

You are engaged. Having me here would only make it harder to say goodbye later. I do still love you though. If you remember me in any way remember that even when you were about to get married to another man and for the rest of my life I loved you and no one else.” He said. Victoria clung to him.

Please don’t leave me. Oh god please don’t leave me.” She begged as she tried to get closer to him. He kissed her forehead and left. Victoria fell to the ground weeping for the man who she loved and loved her, but whom she could never be with.

Chapter 4

After she had cried all the tears she possessed she stood and went to her father’s study where she knew he would be. She did not even bother to knock. ”Father, are you happy? Simon…” she trailed off though when she noticed there was another man in the room.

Victoria. This is your Fiancé. Mr. James Johnson.” Her father said cautioning her to control her temper. Victoria curtsied. James came forward and kissed her hand in the same place Simon had on the stair only this time her heart did not soar.

It is wonderful to find you well. I trust nothing happened during the month in which you disappeared to have frightened you.” James asked.

Of course nothing happened that Simon and I could not handle. You see I stayed with a man named Simon Smith. He took me into his home and helped me until I remembered who I was.  May I speak to my father in private please? “Victoria asked.

Not a problem. I need to go get settled in anyway. I really should be thanking this Simon Smith. I will see you both at dinner?” He asked. Victoria inclined her head answering him. After James was completely out the door Victoria started up again.

You invited him to stay here while I was gone. Why would you do that?” She asked.

Two things first. First I invited him to help us find you. Second we both know that is not why you came here.” Her father replied.

No it is not. As I was staying before are you happy? Simon left and it is all because of this idiotic arranged marriage.” She vented. Her father sighed.

Come here.” He said motioning her to come to him. “Victoria, this marriage has been arranged since you were 7 years old. Far before you ever met Simon. So please do not blame me for this.” He said as Victoria sat on the arm of his chair. “Ever since you were born I simply wanted the best for you. Do you even know that Simon wants to marry you?” He asked.

He told me he had every intention of marrying me.” Victoria said.

Well I have always told you to do what you think is right. The engagement is not official yet and since I can see Simon is truly what would make you happy I give him 5 days to propose. If Simon does propose within the 5 days I will call of the marriage with Mr. Johnson. ” He said smiling.

Really father thank you so much.” She said as she hugged him.

Go tell Simon.” He said. Victoria gave her father a hug and left to go find Simon. She met up with him right outside the Forge. She put a hand on his shoulder and he turned around.

What are you doing here?” Simon asked when he saw that it was her.

My father said that if you propose to me within 5 days he will call of the wedding and let us be together.” Victoria said becoming more and more excited with each word.

That is so wonderful.” Simon said. Then as they embraced Simon swung her around in a circle as you would swing a young child. In the midst of this Victoria’s shawl fell back from around her head exposing her face. However their happiness was interrupted by a familiar voice.

Well lookie here boys if it ain’t our pretty little lady friend.” It said. They both knew it was the voice of the man that had attacked her. So Simon gently pushed Victoria behind him.

You touch her again and I will not hesitate to kill you.” Simon threatened.

Ah Simon Smith. What makes you think you can defeat us in a fight?” The man asked.

What makes you think I can’t?” Simon said in a tone that just dared them to try to make an attempt of attacking him. Victoria stepped between the group of men and Simon then turned to face Simon.

Please Simon do not get in a fight on my account.” Victoria begged him. So Simon just wrapped his arm around Victoria and they walked into the forge. Once inside Simon turned towards her.

Why did you stop me? Those imbeciles need to be taught to leave you alone.” Simon asked.

All that would have happened was that you most likely would have been arrested.” She said. Simon smiled.

I see, because if I get arrested I can’t propose to you within 5 days.” He laughed. Then he kissed her forehead and went over to the forge instructing her to wait there. He took out small tools that Victoria had never seen. As Simon got the fire ready Victoria took off her shawl and her jacket that she wore over her blouse. As Simon worked he occasionally looked back towards her sitting on a little bench. After a while Simon took off his jacket. Then he continued working. After he finished his work he hid something small inside his hand. He walked over to her and looked down at her.

Victoria I know I do not have much to offer, but I do love you. I know this is not much, but it is the best I can do at the moment.” He said then he opened up his hand. There sitting in his palm was a small ring of steel. Victoria caught her breath. “Will you marry me?” Simon asked finally.

Yes you know I will.” Victoria rushed off the bench and jumping up to kiss him. Then they continued to kiss as Simon slid the ring on her finger. Then Victoria pulled away. “Simon this ring is better then any you could ever buy because you made it with your own hands.

Won’t your fiancé be angry?” Simon asked.

I truthfully don’t care.” Victoria confessed just before Victoria kissed Simon again.

Well shall we go and tell your ex-Fiancé?” Simon asked. Victoria just nodded.

Chapter 5

As Victoria put back on her jacket Simon kept kissing her. So this simple task took several minutes. Eventually Victoria stopped him.

Simon we really need to be getting back.” Victoria whispered. Simon laughed.

I know. We do need to get going.” Simon said then he took her hand and they walked back to the house together. Once inside Victoria asked everyone to come to the parlor. When they were all there Victoria stepped forward.

As you all know I have been affianced to Mr. James Johnson. However I now call off the marriage because I am now engaged to Mr. Simon Smith.” She said. Her brother simply glared at Simon, her mother stood there in shock, her father just smiled, and poor Mr. Johnson struggled to find something to say. After a while her mother came to her senses.

Victoria are your sure this is the wisest choice?” she asked.

Mother I do not see father objecting. If you don’t think this is the right choice for me please tell me so.” Victoria said. Her father finally spoke.

As your father I give my consent over the marriage.” He said.

Thank you father.” Victoria said smiling while threading her fingers between Simon’s.

Victoria please go upstairs with your mother. your friends have been waiting to see you and I need to talk with James, Simon, and your brother?” Her father said. So Simon gave Victoria a kiss on the forehead and Victoria left to go see her friends. They all embraced her with a warm welcome.

What happened to you?” They all asked as they hugged her.

Well you know Simon Smith?” Victoria asked. The girls all nodded. They had often stopped by his shop and on the way home and talked about how handsome he was. He never paid them any mind though. So Victoria continued. “Well I have been staying with him for the past month.” She confided. All of the girls gasped.

What will Mr. Johnson think?” One of the friends asked.

It does not matter because I am longer affianced to him. I am now the future Mrs. Smith.” Victoria said becoming excited.

Victoria how could he ever support you. He barely has enough money to keep himself.” One of the friends asked.

We can handle it. We love each other and that means everything.” Victoria sighed as she sat in a chair.

I think it is very romantic. I’m happy for you. Perhaps afterwards you can tell us what the honeymoon is for.” One of her other friends said. Victoria blushed.

I have an idea about that.” Victoria said laughing. The girls started giggling and their mothers had to hush them.

That I will tell you before the wedding and not until then.” Victoria’s mother said.

I personally think you are making a terrible decision marrying him. I know he is attractive, but really. What did he do? I mean did he get you with child?” One of her friends asked rudely.

No he did not. I love him and if you know what is proper you will stop speaking ill of him.” Victoria said growing angry and standing up.

We all know that. She should not have said that. When will the wedding be?” Her best friend Ruth asked.

I have no idea, but I want all 5 of you to be my bridesmaids.” Victoria announced. So the girls started inquiring about the wedding details. While downstairs Jonathon was yelling at Simon.

What did you do to my sister during this past month to make her behave so?” Jonathon asked.

I did nothing I just showed her how to work for a living. However apparently some people in my future family can not control their temper.” Simon said. Jonathon tried to lunge at Simon but James held him back.

Really Jonathon act like a gentleman.” He said then he turned to Simon. “Simon I want you to know I do not hold any grudges. You are lucky to have Victoria and she is lucky to have a man so devoted to her as you are.” He said as they both smiled.

When can we have the wedding?” Simon asked their father.

Well they were going to get married on the last day of December.” Jonathon said. Then he seamed to relax a bit as he went over to Simon. “The only reason I have been being so hard on you is because I care about my sister. I still feel that I have to protect her. Just promise me you won’t hurt her.” Jonathon requested.

I swear I would do anything to keep her safe and to make her happy.” Simon said as he lightly smacked Jonathon on the back. So yes even during the Civil War men showed respect by hitting each other. I guess some things will never change. Then again I would not know what to do if men didn’t show affection to each other that way.

So are we going to stay with the original wedding date?” James asked.

As long as that’s alright with Victoria. It is only a few weeks away.” Simon said.

Knowing my sister she would be fine with today.” Jonathon laughed.

That’s what I mean.” Simon confided. They all laughed. “Now if it is alright I would like to go see my fiancée.” Simon said. As Simon reached the room he heard the girls talking.

Chapter 6

Simon is so wonderful. I can not wait to marry him.” Victoria said. Simon smiled. Then he knocked on the door. “Come in.” Victoria called.

Hello.” He said coming up behind Victoria and kissing her on the head. She looked up at him.

Hello. What are you doing here?” She asked twisting around in the chair to see him.

Seeing my beautiful Fiancée.” He said. Suddenly Victoria got up and pulled him into the chair she had just been sitting in. The girls must have realized it was time to leave because they all left and Victoria’s mother showing them out. After they were out Victoria sat on the arm of the chair. Since they were alone Simon playfully pulled Victoria into his lap leaving most of her leg exposed for a moment before Simon pulled the dress back down. They both laughed.

So when are we getting married?” She asked.

Well we were thinking the last of December like was already planned.” He told her.

If it was up to me we would just go up to the courthouse now and get married.” She told him. Simon laughed.

It is only three weeks.” He told her.

One.” Victoria demanded.

Are we really negotiating?” He asked. Victoria nodded. “How about two weeks. We’ll compromise.” He said.

Fine, but on one condition.” She said.

What would that be?” He asked holding her tighter.

At the ball we officially announce the engagement and wedding date.” She said.

Deal.” He said before kissing her. When Simon tried to pull away Victoria wouldn’t let him. He tried to pull away again. This time Victoria let him.

No you don’t.” She scolded kissing him again rearranging her self to be sitting in a better position on his lap. He pulled away again.

No. You know the rules. Not till after the wedding.” He assured her.

Only two weeks.” She sighed. He smiled mischievously.

I know. I can not hardly wait.” He said. “You know the night when you came out to lie next to me I was dreaming of being married to you. When I woke up and saw you asleep in my arms I couldn’t believe it. I kissed you to make sure it wasn’t a dream. After I kissed you you sighed and mumbled my name. I did not want to wake you up you looked so peaceful.” He told her.

Then my father and brother barged in?” She asked.

Yes. In that moment when they came in I thought I was going to loose you forever.” He confided. Victoria cuddled up closer to him resting her head on his chest. They both laughed happily. “Now I am getting to marry you.” He said.

The rest of the week went by fast then it was time for the ball. Simon had worked all day.

Simon’s here.” Jonathon informed her. Victoria was inside the parlor with Jonathon looking out the window when Simon finally arrived at the house Victoria rushed out onto the porch to meet him in the yard as he caught her in his arms. Then he lightly kissed her and they went inside.

It feels odd being apart.” Victoria said. Simon nodded.

I miss you so much. The forge feels different. Lonelier without you there.” He told her holding her close to keep her warm in the cold December weather as they reached the porch. Victoria laughed as he said this.

I could always come and sit with you for a while.” She told him. They were greeted as they entered the parlor by Jonathon.

Sit where?” Jonathon asked interested.

You were eavesdropping.” Victoria asked. Jonathon laughed and shrugged. Then they all laughed as Victoria and Jonathon’s mother entered the room.

As soon as you stop laughing we can leave.” She told them with a smile. So Victoria, Jonathon, and their mother grabbed their coats and were off. Jonathon escorted his mother because his father had some work to do on a case. Simon and Victoria walked a little behind the others. They were both growing anxious about the coming wedding. At the ball they danced all of the dances switching partners, but always looking across the room at the other until they were paired up again. After it was over Simon walked her home.

Everyone took the news well.” Simon said smiling.

Yes. Which I am awfully glad of.” She told him. She was growing cold so she cuddled up to Simon. He held her tight trying to keep her warm. They were the last to enter the house.

Well I need to head back. It is awfully late.” Simon said as they sat in the parlor.

Not yet. Stay a while.” Victoria begged taking Simon to the piano.

Are you going to play for us?” Simon asked sitting in the chair closest to the Piano. Victoria opened the book sitting out. As she played Simon and her both smiled. She played Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Victoria didn’t miss a single note even when Simon got up and stood behind her putting his hands on her shoulders which were bare in her ball gown. Once finished Victoria turned around. Everyone clapped. Everyone especially James Johnson laughed as Simon helped Victoria up as if displaying a performer at a concert.

That was wonderful.” James said complimenting.

We might have to save up for a piano.” Simon said smiling as he and Victoria sat down on one of the Sofas.

You are welcome to take that one. Victoria is the only person who ever plays it.” Mr. Moore said who had joined them in the middle of the song.

We couldn’t.” Simon said.

Think of it as our wedding present.” He insisted.

That’s very generous papa.” Victoria said squeezing Simon’s hand. Simon stood up.

I really do need to go now. I have work tomorrow.” Simon said.

You are family to be.” Mr. Moore said. Jonathon smiled mischeviously.

Bundle bag.” Jonathon said smiling mischievously.

Chapter 7

No. Don’t put Simon through that.” Victoria begged. Simon laughed.

Really it’s fine. I think it is a good tradition. It show parents they can trust the man their daughter is marrying.” Simon said laughing.

It’s settled then. Good thing we can trust you two.” Mr. Moore said.

We should get started.” Mrs. Moore said. So while her parents got the bag Victoria changed into a nightgown. When everyone came in she was ready. Simon lay very still while the bag was sewn closed. When it was finished everyone left and Simon and Victoria were alone.

I did not know people still did this.” Simon laughed.

Well my parents are very traditional.” Victoria said sitting down on the bed. “You know I could get you out if it would be more comfortable.” She offered.

It is fine. I just hope I’ll get to work in time tomorrow.” He said.

I’ll make sure you do.” She said. Then she crawled into bed and blew out the candle on the bed stand. They woke up earlier then usual.

I guess I should go now.” Simon said. Victoria went to her bed stand and got a pair of scissors and cut the sewing loose. When she was almost finished Jonathon came in without knocking.

So you did undo the sewing. Don’t worry I won’t tell.” He joked.

We didn’t cheat. I have to leave for work.” Simon told him finally able to move freely. Jonathon rolled his eyes. Simon dressed in Jonathon’s room and left after giving Victoria a light kiss on the cheek. After lunch Victoria begged her mother to let her go see Simon. Her mother agreed. When she came in Simon’s shirt sleeves were rolled up past his elbow and he had been working by the fire so he was obviously sweaty. “Hey you what are you doing here?” He asked when he saw her. He wiped his brow with a rag and came over to her.

I brought you lunch. I knew you wouldn’t have eaten anything.” She said handing him the basket she had brought.

Well thank you. I suppose I could stop for a moment to eat something since I am ahead on my orders.” He said sitting down on one of the few benches he had in the shop. Simon ate fast so he could get back to work. For the next 2 weeks while he worked Simon talked the various people who came in and introduced them all to Victoria. They spent Christmas at Victoria’s house and had a little celebration at Simon’s. Then one of the times they had visitors at the Forge someone left and Simon turned to Victoria and smiled to big for him not to have thought of something. It was the day before the wedding.

What is it? I know that smile. What are you planning?” She asked backing away. Simon came towards her.

My hands have quite a bit of soot on them and your dress is just so white.” He said smiling widely and continued to come towards her.

You’ll ruin my dress.” She practically shreiked, her back against the wall. He was now ready, he leaned down and kissed her and put his hands on her back holding her against him firmly.

Chapter 8

When the kiss was broken Victoria looked as Simon slightly amused and slightly angry. “How bad is it?” She asked turning her back to him.

Pretty bad it’s smeared all over the back of your bodice.” He said laughing. It was near time for dinner and Victoria was going to have a large dinner with Simon and all her visiting relatives.

Now what?” She asked hands on hips.

We go to my house and wash it out.” He said. That was exactly what they did. Turns out Simon got every last touch of soot off her back then went to change his own clothes to something that was more presentable. When they entered the house finally the servant at the door told them everyone was in the dining room waiting. When they came in everyone clapped.

To the happy couple.” Jonathon said raising his glass in cheers. Everyone raised their glass along. Another servant came in and handed Simon and Victoria each a glass of champagne. They were both seated at the head of the table. At the end of the dinner Simon stood up.

Thank you all so much for making me feel welcome in your family.” He said before raising his glass. “I would like to propose a toast to my Fiancée. To Victoria, that I will be able to give her a happy life of love and protection.” He said.

To a life full of love and happiness together.” Victoria said standing up and raising her glass. Everyone raised their glasses and repeated Victoria’s phrase.

Why don’t we go to the parlor and have Victoria play one last song on the piano here before it’s moved to her new home.” Jonathon suggested.

Not tonight.” Victoria begged.

Really Jonathon it’s the night before the wedding. Let her rest tonight.” Simon begged.

Yes I suppose so. Since you two will not be getting sleep tomorrow because of the chivalry.” Jonathon said.

Jonathon I’ll make you a deal. I will play the piano if you do not have a chivalry.” Victoria offered.

Not a chance. “Jonathon said smiling. Victoria sighed giving up. Simon didn’t though.

I guess I should knock some since into my brother.” Simon said chasing Jonathon out of the room. Victoria ran to the door and watched as the boys wrestled. It ended when Jonathon tried to run up the stairs and fell halfway up. Simon laughed out of breath and helped him up. By now all the guests were at the door watching and laughing. Victoria knew she could not have had a better night that night. Both of the boys were laughing when they reentered the room. After another ten minutes of chatter Simon announced he had to leave and would see them all the following day. Later that night while Victoria was changing for bed there was a knock at her door. It was her mother carrying a large white bundle.

I thought you might want to try on the dress again.” She said. Her mother came in and Victoria tried on the dress. It had a low neckline that fell of the shoulders and little puff sleeves made of lace with a satin bodice and a full skirt made to fit over a hoop. When it was finished and the veil in place Victoria sighed to herself. The dress accentuated her body perfectly. She could only dream of Simon’s reaction.

What is it?” Her mother asked worried.

It’s nothing. Just I’m anxious for tomorrow. This time tomorrow Simon and I will have our first night as man and wife.” Victoria said. Her mother smiled.

I think you must have already figured out what the honeymoon is for. I’ll tell you though as bluntly as I can.” Her mother said after a moment’s hesitation. Victoria turned to her mother.

Mother I have to tell you the truth. Jonathon told me already what happens.” Victoria said laughing.

That boy I swear will be the death of me.” Her mother mumbled. Victoria couldn’t help but laugh.

Do you think Simon will like the dress?” She asked anxiously swirling the skirt.

Yes I do think so, but darling I think Simon wouldn’t care what you were wearing. You could be wearing a gunny sack and he would think you were just as beautiful as you are in that dress.” Her mother confided. Victoria went to bed that night happy with dreams of her and Simon’s life in the future. She woke up in the morning and quickly dressed and ate breakfast with her father, mother, and brother one last time.

Chapter 9

The morning went by fast and soon enough Victoria was sitting at the church in her dress. She eventually was so anxious she started twirling her ring on her finger. Ruth sighed and came over to her.

Calm down. Only a few more minutes.” She said.

I do not think I will be able to calm down till I see Simon standing there by the priest waiting for me.” Victoria said.

I tell you for the thousandth time. He will be there,” Her father laughed.

We need to go.” Ruth said to the other bridesmaids. As maid of honor she was remembering when everyone went out because Victoria was nervous. Finally Victoria stood beside her father outside the doors to the sanctuary.

I am so nervous.” Victoria whispered.

Don’t be.” Her father said just before the door opened. As she started down the aisle she saw Simon standing there. His eyes glued to her and standing wide open. Victoria smiled. The church was full. Everyone staring at her, but she only cared about one person's reaction. The man there waiting for her. When they finally reached the altar Simon’s smile grew as her father handed Simon her hand.

You look stunning.” He whispered. As they stood there holding hands during the readings and Gospel Victoria threaded her fingers through Simons. When they recited their vows Victoria’s heart she was sure would jump from her chest. When Simon said “I Do” Victoria waited a moment holding her breath.

I now present Mr. and Mrs. Simon Smith. You may now kiss the bride.” The preacher said. Then Simon’s arms were around her waist and he gave her a gentle kiss as she kissed back just as gently. Then they walked out of the chapel together. Once out in the receiving line there were many hugs and Congratulations. When they finally were home at Simon’s Victoria collapsed in a kitchen chair.

So we’re finally home.” Simon said smiling. They were both so tired they simply crawled into bed. Around midnight they were awoken by noise. “I swear I am going to kill your brother if that’s him.” Simon said when there was a knock at the door. Sure enough it was. Jonathon, his friends, and her father and his friends were all there. With them was the piano.

You woke us up to bring us the piano?” Victoria asked angrily.

Yup.” Jonathon said. After the piano was in place Simon tried to get them all out.

Alright you have delivered the piano now go home.” He said tiredly.

Not a chance.” Jonathon said. Simon sighed.

We were asleep. Now leave please so we can go back to bed.” Simon begged. Eventually after a while Simon got them all out. “I just want to go back to bed. I need to get up in a few hours anyway.” Simon said. Victoria laughed.

So you are so tired you can not do anything?” Victoria asked teasingly. Simon nodded his head. “Well I know something we could do that requires a bed but not sleeping. However if you’re to tired.” Victoria said walking into the bedroom teasingly.

Chapter 10

Simon was across the room within seconds. He was kissing her as they had the first time they had kissed. However this time he did not stop at the first two buttons. By the time they reached the bedroom Simon was shirtless and Victoria in one of Simon’s shirts that was half unbuttoned.

I love you.” He whispered in her ear.

I love you too.” She said as he started kissing down her chest. She allowed him to pull the shirt off the rest of the way and laid her down on the bed. “Simon you are perfect beyond words.” Victoria said.

Well I think you are perfect. You’re everything I imagined a woman should be.“ He said lying down beside her on the bed. Victoria smiled as he held her close and kissed her fiercely. She felt so safe lying there in his arms. Her breath and heartbeat quickened as he held her even closer. His hand moved down her back holding her there. When he finally entered her she could hardly catch a breathe. Victoria did not even remember falling asleep, but the one thing she remembered thinking was that it had been even better then she ever dreamed. However when she woke up Simon was gone but had left a note. She picked it up off the pillow and pulled the covers up to cover her body as she sat up and read.

Victoria,

I had to go into the forge. If you could please stop by it would be wonderful. If you do not I will be home as soon as possible.

Love,

Your Husband,

Simon

She spent the morning cleaning up the house and cooking lunch. At lunch time she put some food inside a basket and headed off to the forge. As soon as she came in Simon was greeting her with a kiss.

Hello beautiful.” He said.

Hello darling. I brought lunch.” She said showing him the basket she held. He took it from her and set it on the ground. His arms wrapped around her.

Thank you for bringing lunch. I am so glad we’re finally married.” He said with a big smile.

So am I? Could I help you with anything?” She asked.

Actually I could sure use some general help in the forge.” Simon said. “It would be wonderful if you would not only be my wife, but my business partner also.” He said. Victoria laughed and kissed him. “Is that a yes?” He asked after she pulled away.

It is a definantly.” Said Victoria. She went over and saw what Simon had been working on. It was a carriage wheel. Over the next 3 months Simon basically showed her all the things he made. Soon she was just as good as him on many of the projects. Each day they went to the forge together, but Victoria would run home to get food. They barley made enough to get by. One night as they lay in bed Victoria looked at him with an expression he’d never seen before. “Simon do you want to have a baby?” Victoria asked.

What kind of question is that? Of course I want a child. Maybe even two or three eventually if you want.” He said kissing her head.

I mean do you want a baby now? I want a child so much.” She said cuddling next to him.

I know. I don’t think we could afford to raise a child at the moment though.” He said.

Could we try though?” She begged. Simon nodded. The very next day when Simon woke up Victoria was already up and setting out breakfast. She had a blanket wrapped sari style. Simon came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her.

Good Morning.” He said as he took the plate she was carrying and taking it over to the table. Then he came back for her.

Not this morning Simon please. I am worn out.” She said. He sat her down and would not let her get up again. He brought everything else over to the table and fixed her a plate before even thinking about himself. He obviously was not a man who though himself above house work.

Tell me what you need.” He said listening intently. Victoria just shook her head.

What I need is a day to relax I think.” She told him. Simon agreed,

Why not go spend the day with your mother or friends?” Simon suggested. Victoria shook her head.

You need me at the forge.” She insisted. Simon laughed and went over to her.

I managed the forge for years by myself. I think I can get by for one day.” He said. Victoria nodded.

I know, but I feel I should be helping.” She said.

You already have. You deserve a day to relax.” He insisted. So when they had both ate Simon went to the forge and Victoria to her parent’s house. As she reached the porch her mother came out to greet her.

What are you doing here?” She asked. Victoria laughed.

Simon made me take a day off.” She told her mother who laughed and ushered her inside.

Well come on in. We haven’t seen you in so long.” Her mother said. Victoria couldn’t help but laugh. It had been quite a while. Approximately three months.

We missed you so much. How has married life been?” Her mother asked leading her to the parlor.

Wonderful. Life is even better then I dreamed it would be.” Victoria laughed cheerfully.

Good. That is how it should be.” Her mother said joyfully. “So have you two discussed having children yet?” She asked. Victoria nodded.

We decided last night actually that we would try to have a baby.” She admitted.

Simon is a good man. He will make a good father.” Her mother said casually. Victoria smiled at the thought of a young child running around the house and playing games with Simon.

Yes he will be a good father. I hope I will become with child soon.” She told her mother.

With the war coming I have to wonder is Simon will enlist. If he does he may be harmed.” John said having just entered the room.

I know it is a possibility, but I hope it will not come to war.” Victoria said to her brother.

Well the south succeeded from the union and I think war in unavoidable.” John promised.

Please children don’t discuss this now.” Her mother scolded.

Mother would you like to go for a little window shopping today?” Victoria asked changing the topic.

It sounds lovely.” Her mother replied. Then they left for town.

Chapter 11

Is there anything you really need. Clothes, Shoes, or food? I can cover you if you need anything like that.” Her mother promised as they put on their coats and walked into town.

No we have everything we need for the moment. Simon worries sometimes about making sure we get by. If we have a child we will have even more trouble making ends meet.” Victoria pointed out.

When you two do have a child we can help you out. If you ever need anything all you have to do is ask.” Her mother promised.

I know.” Victoria pointed out. The rest of the day they had a wonderful time looking in all of the little shops. However they did not buy anything. At lunch they stopped by to see Simon then went back to their window shopping. When Victoria got home that afternoon Simon was still at the forge so she went straight there to find him. He greeted her happily.

How was your day darling?” He asked.

Good it was nice to spend a day with my mother, but I did miss you terribly. How was yours? ” She asked.

Well I got a lot done. I missed you terribly though.” He promised. As he held her close she didn’t say anything, but simply clung to him. “What’s wrong?” He asked.

It’s nothing. John just said something earlier that made me think.” She admitted.

What was it? You know you can tell me.” Simon told her holding an arm around her waist and the other resting on her shoulder.

He said that war is likely to happen and that if you enlist you may be hurt. I hate the thought of anything happening to you.” She admitted quietly.

If it does come to war I may enlist, but don’t worry if I do our children will still have a father.” He promised.

I hope so. I want to go home now. I don’t want to stand here and talk of war.” She admitted.

Ok we can go home.” He told her. Once home they fell into their usual routine. Dinner, anything they felt they wanted to do, then they went to bed. In the middle of the night Victoria woke up from a nightmare. In it Simon was badly wounded and the doctor had been saying he may not survive. She looked over at Simon’s sleeping form beside her. He was lying there safe beside her. She wrapped his arms around her and got as close to him as possible. The dream had been so horrible. She knew she did not want to loose him. She just lay like that for a few hours then he started to stir a bit and she just cuddled closer. He held her tighter.

Good morning.” She whispered.

Good morning. How did you sleep?” He asked.

Not to well. I had a bad dream. I’m fine though.” She admitted.

What was it about?” He asked pushing her back a little to see her face.

I had a dream that you were badly injured and the doctor said you may not live. I was so afraid. Then I woke up and the only thing I wanted to do is lie here beside you.” She said as a tear ran down her face at the thought of loosing him.

Oh it is all ok. It was only a dream. See I’m fine.” He promised holding out his arms to her. She let him hold her tight. The moment his arms were around her the dream melted away and she felt safe.

I was so afraid. I could only relax again once I felt your arms around me again.” She told him.

Why don’t you get dressed and I will make breakfast today.” He suggested. She agreed. She pulled out the blue work dress that she had worn on that first day. Whenever she wore it brought back sweet memories of their time together before she had remembered her identity. However this time when she was putting on her corset she noticed for the first time that her belly was slightly rounded. She called for Simon and he was there quickly. “What is it?” He asked concerned.

Feel my stomach. Does it seem different?” She asked.

Yes actually. What do you think it is?” He asked.

I think I might be pregnant. I have missed my women's time for the past four months now that I think about it. I didn't notice till now.” She told him. His hand still resting on her belly. He told her to lay back down and he would have her mother come over to look and see if that was it. Sure enough Victoria was pregnant.

This is so wonderful.” Simon told her with a smile when they found out for sure.

It is.” She agreed smiling back at him.

What is it? You look like you are a little worried?” He asked her after her mother had left.

"I am worried. I mean what kind of life will our child have if war breaks out?" She said.

"Our child will be fine. We are not even sure there will be war." He said trying to calm her down.

"John seems to think there will be." She said.

"Victoria we have been over this all before. I will be here for our children." He promised as he caressed her cheek.

"I know you will try." She said putting her hand in his. "I just know that if it comes down to defending us by going to war and staying home you would go."

"You should rest. I don't want you upsetting yourself over what could end up being nothing. We will conquer these obstacles as they come." He promised her. She nodded and laid back against the pillows in their bed. He sat there beside her watching her till she fell asleep. When she woke up she found a note saying he had gone to the forge and would be home for dinner as usual. A few months later in June one day Simon came into the house looking grave.

"What is wrong?" She asked.

"There are men who were asking for men to enlist in the army for 3 months. I signed up." He admitted.

Chapter 12

"You did what! You enlisted without even asking me? Simon the baby will be coming in a few months." She said.

"Victoria listen to me please. I figured it up and I should be back about when the baby is born. I don't really want to leave you all alone here when you're pregnant, but I don't want to be one of the only men in town who doesn't go." He said.

"Simon people would understand. I mean we are expecting after all." She said putting her hands on her swollen belly and turning away from him. He came over and stood behind her and wrapped his arms around her with his hands resting on her belly as well.

"Victoria I understand that you're angry with me. Johnathen is going to." He said.

"John doesn't have a wife and isn't starting a family." She said bitterly. He turned her around and looked into her eyes.

"Please don't be angry with me darling. I just need to do my part." He said

"I'm not angry. I'm afraid of what will happen. Afraid that the baby will come early while you're gone and something might go wrong, and I am afraid John or you will die. It would have been bad enough worrying about John, but now I'll have to worry about you as well. I don't know how I could go on if you died."

"Victoria I swear to you. I will come back. I'm afraid to. I am afraid that so many things could go wrong, but I have faith that God will bring both me and John safely home." He said before kissing her and leaning down to kiss her belly. "Papa will be here for you. " He promised in a whispered to their unborn child.

"When do you leave?" She asked sounding like she really didn't want to know.

"In a few days." He said standing back up. When the day finally came 3 days later they walked to where the other men of the town had gathered. When they got there Simon kissed her goodbye then leaned down and adressed the baby in her belly. "Papa will hopefully be back to see you be born. Remember Papa loves you and to keep your mother from worrying to much." He said before kissing Victoria one last time before going off to join the group of men and leaving. Suddenly her mother was standing beside her ready to lead her back to the house.

"I'm worried about them. I mean it would be bad enough to loose John, but I don't know what I'd do if I lost Simon." She admitted a few minutes later. "Do you think I'm overreacting?" She asked, stopping in the road.

"No I don't think you're overreacting at all. You are worried about your husband. In war death is a very real possibility." Her mother said before hugging her. They stood like that for a second or two before her mother took a small step back. "Don't worry to much though. It is only for three months. He hopefully will be back to see the baby be born. Besides I would be more worried about John being able to handle himself then Simon."

"I don't think you need to worry about that. Simon will try his best to keep John safe." Victoria said knowing her mother was most likely more worried then she was. If John died her mother would loose one of her only two children. She couldn't picture loosing a child. Even though the baby hadn't been born yet she still couldn't handle the thought of loosing her child especially if she lost Simon too. Then they walked the rest of the way back to her and Simon's house.

"Would you like to stay with us while Simon is gone? Won't it be lonely?" Her mother asked.

"No. I will be alright. I want to be there making sure our home stays just the way it is. It will be lonely without Simon, but it would be even lonlier at your house without anything there to remind me of him and help me feel close to him." Victoria explained.

"Well if you change your mind fell free to come and stay with us." Her mother said before hugging her and leaving. Then Victoria went inside and sat down at the table just thinking for a long time.

Chapter 13

As the days went by she kept expecting Simon to come into the house from the forge everyday. Then she would remember that he was off at war and would miss him terribly. After a few weeks she got a letter from him. She tore it open anxiously. It was written on a piece of brown paper. It said.

My Dearest Victoria,

How are you doing? I hope everything is well with you and the baby. Jonathen is here with me and wants me to assure you he is well and says hello. I hope you aren't worrying about us to much. We are both perfectly well except for being a little tired. Training is hard, but all figured not to bad. As I write I am sitting by the fire outside our tent writing by the light from it. It is starting to die down and it is getting late so I will have to say goodbye. As you know I send all my love.

    Your adoring husband,

    Simon

After she finished reading the letter she held it against her chest. She was glad they were both doing well, and it was good to hear from him after so long. She immeditally sat down  and wrote a reply.

Simon was sitting outside the tent he, Jonathen, and two other men shared when the young drummer boy ran up to him holding out an envelope.

"You got a letter sir. I was asked to bring it to you." The child said.

"Thank you." He said as he took the envelope from the child and opened it and pulled out the letter that had a ribbon tucked into it. It was from Victoria. It read.

Dear Simon,

I am well. It was so good to get your letter. I miss you so much. I know it hasn't been very long, but I am already looking forward to the day when you return home to me. Not much has changed here at home. The baby is fine and was moving the other day and whenever I am missing you I put my hand on my stomach and know that I have a part of you here with me. I am glad to hear that both you and Jonathen are well. Tell him I say hello as well. I am sure you are very busy so I will say goodbye for now. I send you all of my love. I tucked a ribbon into the letter so that you can have something to remind you of me.

    Your ever devoted wife,

    Victoria

"Who is that from?" One man asked him curiously as Simon finished reading the letter and folded it up before tucking it into his pocket and just holding the ribbon in his hands.

"My wife, Her name is Victoria." Simon said with a smile finally looking up as he tucked the ribbon into his pocket as well.

"What is she like." The other man asked.

"She is beautiful. She has curly brown hair and blue eyes. A heart shaped face and she is so graceful no matter what she's doing. Sometimes I can hardly believe she fell in love with me." He admitted picturing her in his mind.

"This is a picture of her if you all would like to see. She is my sister." Jonathen said speaking up as he handed around a photograph. Simon had never seen it before. "It was taken a week before they met."

"She is lovely. You are a lucky man Simon." One of the men said as he handed the picture to Simon. Who finally getting a good look at it smiled. In the photograph Victoria was sitting in her family's parlor in the gown she had been wearing when they had first met, which had of course been ruined. She was smiling shyly and looking absolutely beautiful. Then he tried to hand it back to Jonathen.

"Keep it. She's your wife after all. Besides I'm sure you have more use for it then I do." Jonathen said with a smile. Simon thanked him, then tucked the photograph into his bag.

*****

About a month after Simon's letter arrived Victoria decided to go and visit her mother. They ate lunch together and on her way back home a little boy ran past her calling.

"The soldiers are coming." With the excitement that only a child can display. Victoria stopped him.

"Which soldiers are coming?" She asked.

"Why the union soldiers. The men papa left with." The boy said before running off. Victoria ran off in the direction he had come from. If the men were back that meant that Simon was in town. She finally saw the soldiers marching. They stopped in front of the court house and she listened as she heard the officer tell them they could go visit their families for awhile if they lived in the town. She couldn't see either Simon of Jonathen. Then the men started to dispearse and she saw them.

"Simon you're here." She called as she ran over to him. He turned from where he was talking with a group of his fellow soldiers. Jonathen among them. In total there was a group of four.

"There's my girl." He said as he pulled her into his arms and kissed her right in front of the other men.

"Where is my greeting sister? You run to your husband, but not even a hello to your brother?" Jonathen said teasingly, making them pull apart.

"Hello Jonathen." She said as she gave him a quick hug.

"Victoria these are my and Jonathen's tent mates. Gentlemen this is my wife Victoria." He said. All of the boys took off their hats.

"We've heard a lot about you. It's good to finally meet you." One of the men said.

"It is. We now know the famous Victoria. Simon talks about you so often we feel like we almost know you." The other man says.

I hope it is all good things.” Victoria said.

Of course. We just all talk about our lives when we start missing home.” The man replied.

We should get you home.” Simon said as he looked down at her lovingly.

That is true. After all she is pregnant.” One of the men said. “It wouldn’t do to have her getting sick.”

Where are all of you staying?” Victoria asked as Simon wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her close beside him.

We hadn’t thought of that yet.” One of the men admitted. “I am sure we will find somewhere.”

Simon you should invite them to stay in the house with us.” Victoria whispeared. “They are your friends after all.”

That’s my girl. Always thinking of others.” He whispeared as he placed a kiss on her nose before turning to the other men. “Victoria has suggested that I ask you men if you would like to stay with us for the night.”

No I would feel like I was intruding on your homecoming.” One of them men said. The other nodded.

You could most likely stay at the house with me and my parents.” Jonathen offered.

If you won’t stay you should at least come for dinner.” Victoria said.

Now that I think I will certainly do.” One of the men said. “It has been ages since we had a good home cooked meal. Though Simon usually manages to make what we have edible.” Victoria laughed.

You are all welcome to have dinner with us. Right Simon?” Victoria said.

Of course they are welcome.” Simon said. With that said they all proceeded to the house. Victoria feed them all the soup she had been cooking most of the day. The conversation at the table was scarce untill Jonathen said that he wanted to tell Victoria something.

What is it?” She asked.

I am going to continue on in the war. All of us besides Simon are planning too. Our three months ends tomorrow, and I want to keep fighting.” Jonathen said.

Johnathen I don’t know what to say. I was hoping after the three months that you and Simon would both be back here safe.” Victoria said.

Don’t worry Victoria. We will keep your brother safe as well as we can.” One of the men said hoping to comfort her.

Thank you for that.” She said.

Maybe you gentleman should go get some rest now. I don’t think all this excitement is good for Victoria or the baby.” Simon said.

Of course. I hope you will come see us off tomorrow morning.” One of the men said.

I certainly hope too.” Simon said. Then the men left and they were finally along together.

Chapter 14

I have missed you so much. I am so glad you are home. I’ve been worried about you.” Victoria confided that night as they lay in bed.

I missed you too. I thought of you every day. I could hardly wait to get back here to you. Has there been any problems with the baby?” He said as he looked at her smiling at him.

No, no problems. Everything seems to be going just fine. I have been spending a lot of time with Mama and she said that I have had a fairly easily pregnancy.” Victoria said. She watched as Simon smiled.

I wish I could have been here to help you. I feel like I missed so much.” He admitted sounding slightly sad.

Well you are home now and will be able to see the baby be born.” She pointed out.

Thank the Lord that I am. I wanted to be here with you to witness the birth of our child.” Simon said before kissing her. “Speaking of which when do you think the baby will come?”

It could happen any time now.” She said. Suddenly they heard a frantic knocking at the door.

Who on earth could that be?” Simon wondered out loud. “You stay in here. I will go see who it is.” Simon then got out of bed and put on a pair of pants and shirt before leaving the room. She could hear people speaking in a worried whispear and when Simon didn’t come back after a few minutes she took a blanket off the bed to see what was going on. Jonathen was talking to Simon in a low voice.

What is going on? Has something happened?” She asked drawing their attention.

Victoria I thought you would be asleep. Yes though, something has happened.” Jonathen said.

Jonathen I don’t know that we should tell her at the moment.” Simon cautioned. “We can tell her later.”

Damnit Simon I need her to help me. I don’t intend to make her wonder what it is.” Jonathen said before turning back to her. “I told mama and pa that I am planning to stay with the army and she is distraught. I was hoping you could come and help to comfort her.”

Of course I will come help. I don’t know how much help I will be, but I will sure try.” Victoria promised. “Just let me get dressed real quick.” Then she went back into the bedroom and got dressed. Then Jonathen, Simon and Victoria went back to their parents house. When they got to the house her father was waiting for her in the entryway.

Hello papa.” Victoria said as she hugged her father.

Hello baby girl.” He said as he hugged her back. “Why don’t you go up and try to comfort your mama.” Victoria nodded and went upstairs to her parents room and knocked on the door before calling who it was.

Come in.” Her mother called. She came into the room to find her mother in bed looking as if she had been crying.

Hello dearie. What brings you here so late at night?” Her mother managed to ask with a smile.

Jonathen asked me to come up and see you.” Victoria admitted.

So you know what he is planning on doing? I hope Simon isn’t planning on staying in the army.” Her mother said.

He isn’t going too. He is going to stay at home with me and the baby.” Victoria said as she sat down beside her mother on the bed.

That is good news. One less man for us to worry about.” Her mother said with a good natured smile.

I am very releived he will be home. I am ready for this baby to be born though now that Simon is home.” She admitted. Her mother laughed.

Well the little thing should be coming any time now.” Her mother pointed out.

I am actually kind of nervous about it.” Victoria confided. “I do not know if Simon and I are ready. I would like to think we are, but I am not quite certain.”

Oh dear you shouldn’t be nervous. You will be a wonderful mother and when you get frustrated, and trust me it will happen, you have Simon there to help you. He is a wonderfully understanding and caring man. You two will be some of the best parents I have ever seen I’ll wager.” Her mother promised her before wrapping her arms around her and holding her close like she used to when Victoria was a little girl. She wasn’t sure how long they had been lying there when the contractions started. She gasped and her hands flew to her belly.

I think the baby is coming.” She told her mother.

Oh! We should get you up to your room. You go ahead and head up there and I will go down and get Simon.” Her mother promised. Victoria nodded before her mother helped her up off the bed and she headed off to her room.

Chapter 15

Victoria let out a scream and pushed with all her might. She had been in labor for hours and she was hoping that the baby would come out soon. When she fell back against the pillows Simon brushed a strand of hair away from her face and smiled down at her.

That’s it darling. You are doing wonderfully.” He said in encouragement. She smiled back up at him.

You are almost there honey. I think this next push is when the baby is going to start coming.” Her mother said.

Our baby is almost here.” Victoria said in awe as she gave Simon’s hand a squeeze just before she started pushing again.

Our baby is almost here. Just a little bit longer alright? You can do this.” Simon said in encouragement. Victoria nodded. When the baby was finally born Victoria fell back against the pillows in relief.

You just had a healthy looking baby boy.” Her mother informed them with a smile before cutting the embilical cord and going to clean off the baby. Then she handed him to Simon who sat down beside Victoria so she could see.

Our baby boy. I want to hold him.” She told Simon. He smiled and handed him over to her. Simon watched as Victoria looked at their baby for the first time.

You’re a handsome baby boy aren’t you?” Victoria cooed a minute or two later. “You are going to be a very handsome man when you grow up just like your papa aren’t you?” Simon couldn’t help laughing at that comment.

I certainly hope he gets his looks from you.” Simon joked. Victoria glared at him, but the effect was ruined by that fact that she loved him so much and she was so happy.

I am going to tell everyone.” Her mother said before leaving the room so they had some privacy.

Are you happy?” Victoria asked.

Of course I am. You gave me a beautiful and healthy baby boy.” He said before kissing her then his newborn son’s head. There was a knock on the door then Jonathen and her parents came in followed by Simon and Jonathen’s friends.

So I hear I have a nephew.” Jonathen said with a smile.

Yes you do.” Victoria said as she looked at how happy everyone was.

Can I hold the little guy?” Jonathen asked hopefully.

I suppose so. Do be careful though.” Simon instructed as he watched Jonathen come over and take the baby into his arms.

Have you decided on a name yet?” One of Simon and Jonathen’s friends asked.

We had been thinking of Evan for a boy.” Victoria told everyone.

Evan is a nice name.” Her father said in agreement.

I think it’s settled them. Evan Smith is his name.” Simon said with pride.

I am glad I was here to see him before I had to leave again.” Jonathen said suddenly.

I’m glad you were too. I am going to miss you.” Victoria said suddenly sad at the thought of her brother going back into danger. Jonathen came over and sat down beside her after handing Evan off to Simon.

Don’t worry Vicki I will come back to you all in one piece.” Jonathen proimsed.

I hope so.” She said. Jonathen hugged her and kissed her head.

You should rest while you can. I will still be here in the morning and I am sure you are tired from giving birth.” Jonathen said.

We should let her rest.” Her mother said before ushering everyone out except Simon.

Would you like to spend the night here or do you want to go home?” Simon asked.

I want to go home. I think we need to stay here for tonight though. Incase we need mama.” She said.

Alright. We will stay here. I will go ask if there is a crib we can bring up so he will be right by us.” Simon said. Then he gave her Evan before leaving the room. Hours later Victoria was feeding Evan when she looked over at Simon and smiled.

Isn’t it hard to believe that we only met a little over a year ago and we already have a baby?” She asked.

Not really I think we were always destined to be together and once we were put in a situation where we fell in love it all just fell into place quickly. You and Evan are my life now. And whenever we have more children they will be a part of my life too.” He said.

I love you Simon. I swear you are perfect.” She said. He kissed her.

I am not perfect at all. If either of us are perfect it is you.” He said. “You have given me everything I have ever dreamed off and more and I don’t want you to ever leave me. I don’t know how I could go on if I lost you.”

My sentiments exactly when you were gone. Lets hope neither of us never have to find out.” She said.

Epilouge

Victoria and Simon waited years later when the war ended for Jonathen to return with her parents. Evan was now 3. Jonathen had told them in his last letter that he had a surprise for everyone. When he finally arrived he helped a woman out of the train. Victoria immeditally realised that her brother was bringing with him a wife. That or a woman he wanted to marry.

Jonathen welcome home.” Victoria said once Jonathen finally made his way over to him.

Victoria I am disapointed in you.” Jonathen said in mock critism.

Why on earth would you be disapointed with me?” She asked now shocked.

You and Simon have not had another child yet. I would have expected you would have had at least one more by now.” Jonathen said with a mischevious smile.

Actually I think we may be expecting again.” Victoria announced.

We are?” Simon asked with a smile.

Well it is about time you two had another.” Jonathen said.

Oh John do stop teasing your sister.” The woman with him insisted.

Speaking of suprises. What is going on John?” Her mother asked. “I see you brought someone with you.”

Yes I did and I have very exciting news.” Jonathen said.

What is it?” Simon asked smiled as though he already knew.

Well this Miss Caroline Anderson, and she has agreed marry me.” Jonathen announced. Everyone congratulated them. “Though I honestly do not see what she sees in me.” Jonathen said teasingly.

Jonathen cut that out.” Caroline scolded.

Now you know how I felt when Victoria agreed to marry me.” Simon said to Jonathen.

Oh and what would that feelling be?” Victoria asked.

Like I am the luckiest man alive, and I get to have that feeling every morning I wake up next to you and especially when I look at you and Evan together.” Simon said. Then he kissed his wife passionantly and then picked up son in his arms feelling again like the luckiest man alive knowing he was going to have another child soon in a few months.

Hi there, My name is Tsukarin.

I liked the story in general because it is easy to understand what is happening.

But there are several points to take note of.

Firstly, she was losing a lot of blood, from both her head and the wound in her chest. If that was so, she shouldn't be able to listen to anything because pain would override all reactions and feelings. So she should be moaning in pain and agony.

"sir name" could you perhaps be talking about surname?

There are several occasions when you miss out a comma at certain places where a person has to pause while they are reading so it flows easier like "Victoria(,) this is my mother" or "On one such occasion(,) Victoria stopped Simon while he was cleaning her wound."

"After Victoria got dressed ('and the' instead of 'all') four of them walked back to the house together."

Also take notice of several misspellings like "call of(f)" "passionantly= passionately"

There are other things to think about when going through the story again. The story is really nice, but it would be much better if there were more descriptions so that the reader can picture their location in the mind.

If you feel like you would like someone to help edit your work, feel free to drop me a message on my profile.

Thank you very much for the review. I am glad you took time to help me out. :)
