The Tale of Creation

PreviousNext

Many millennia ago, there was only What Could Be. What Was and everything else with it had faded into nothingness, only the echoes of past thoughts, memories, feelings, and energies were left to remain in the vast empty expanse left behind. All of this, both the echos and emptiness, was What Could Be. Time was immeasurable as the echos drifted through void until eventually the echoes of conjoined. While those that were discordant bounced off one another and went their separate directions, those that were harmonious coalesced to form What Is.

What Is formed the very basis of all things, what gave the world its resonance, duality, and order. However, with everything being in perfect harmony, there was no life. Although in the farthest reaches of what was left of What Could Be, as more of What Is formed, echoes that would not join willingly became trapped. These discordant echos were eventually forced to combine with each other just like the others had until they became not dualities like the rest but extremes, primordial forces that had existed long ago in What Was.

These primordial forces were so powerful that they could not be contained forever by the peaceful and stable dualities that surrounded them, and so, soon enough, they violently broke free. First came the darkness with its inky mists that shook everything that had come to be with its escape and washed over all of What Is like a stifling blanket of fog, stretching out far and thick to fill in even the farthest reaches that remained of What Could Be. Now enveloped in this darkness, the dualities became very still, their vibrance dimmed until the darkness surrounded all of What Could Be and What Is, touching what would be its rival, the second primordial force that now existed from What Was. At the touch of darkness, light was stirred as its opposite and exploded from its confinement in sharp beaming rays, the edges of which were keener than the best honed blade. Such a force carried with it the energy the likes of none has since been seen, cutting through the blanket darkness and invigorating the previously inert dualities so much that they could not sustain such a calm form and radiated this energy between each other until the first physical forms came to be.

From the combined energies of the dualities, these physical forms combined and collected until they became stars, suns, planets, and moons, all gathered closest to their most compatible sources, securing their places and powers in What Is. The darkness and light did not fade from their initial freedoms though, instead they seeped into these creations. In some places like stars, the light was more powerful than the darkness and so the stars shone with its victory. However, in other places the darkness was too thick for the light to cut through and so it remained as a blanketed body, calm and devoid of energy. On certain planets though, those closest to the strongest dualities, the battle of light and darkness began again, sparking life in the Divines, beings of creation and destruction.

These Divines, their names now lost to the sands of time, looked at all that had come to be and learned. They were not like the bodies that had formed from the primitive battles of light and dark. No, they were unique woven beings of every success and loss there had been, brought to life by the resonating energies that formed all of What Is. Just like the celestial bodies and their placements in What Is, the Divines had their aspects and specialties, never one being just the same as another. From their differences they came together upon a planet with the perfect balance of light and darkness to sustain themselves and fascinated by the means in which they had been created, attempted to create things of their own. Although, they did not have the power to create something out of nothing. Not even What Is, What Was, or What Could Be did as they all used the energies and echos. So the Divines used what was already created and shaped it into both dramatic landscapes and calm harmonious life of plants and trees. However, these things were too calm and so the darkness began to creep over the land. In order to keep the balance they had so meticulously created, they created animals which covered the planet and invigorated it again. But in the end, the energy of the creatures and the stillness of the plants and earth became turbulent once more. The Divines pondered and watched before coming to a conclusion. They needed something like themselves that would secure the balance and ensure no one side eventually won.

After many days of careful shaping, they formed the perfect being out of light and darkness, of the stillness of earth and the fire of animals, of peace and war then carefully set it upon the land. And thus, people came to be.

Hi Ranger,
since we were talking for a bit I decided to take a look at one of your works 😊 You never updated the summary, so I assume feedback will be still valued :3

Grammar question: Is it really ok to have no article here before void? “the echos drifted through void“? It sounds incomplete to me. Same with this here: “ eventually the echoes of conjoined” echoes of what? Is this just something of English that I don’t get?

I also think that the second sentence, which is almost 2 whole lines, might be a bit too long and overloaded for… for so early into the work 😊 Makes it a bit harder to get into it!
I do like the names of the concepts tho! The explanations make sense too and I really want to know where you’re going with this.
I really like this bounced off and then harmonized business. That is such a cool way to imagine atoms clashing and potentially bonding!

I’m just not sure you laid enough ground work for me to accept that life is antithetical to perfect harmony. Why wouldn’t this state of being create life?

I also feel like this sentence here might be too long and too full of information:

Although in the farthest reaches of what was left of What Could Be, as more of What Is formed, echoes that would not join willingly became trapped.
I have trouble with „became trapped“ being so passive and also with “as more of X formed”. Something abt the combination of those two expression makes this sentence hard for me to understand.

Ok upon a second reading the sentence isn’t quite so hard to understand but I still stumbled a little over the similar sound of <such> and <so much> in a long sentence like this one: “invigorating the previously inert dualities so much that they could not sustain such a calm form“ – especially because the behemoth of a sentence already begins with “Such a”

Oh I wonder why the expression is “sands of time” for this creation myth too!

So the Divines, whoever they were, had the power to shape the What Is as they pleased?
Wait, why would the calmness only attract Darkness? Didn’t Light also not like harmony?
Or …are the animals they create representations of light…? I admit you kinda lost me in this final paragraph @.@
And why would the Divines think that something lesser but like themselves would keep the balance? I didn’t get that they were responsible for the cosmic balance, where is this mentioned?

Interesting creation myth for sure :3

"Praise the holy father-"
Jokes aside, this is a cool way to portray the creation of the forces of the universe as equals instead of good and evil, fantastic. Ah, fantastic as in fantasy, but fantastic nonetheless. First there were primordials, then divines, then the men...
I can't really criticize, it reads very smooth and also very understandable, and the world building is great, the start of a great fantasy.

Let there be creation...

How mythical!

I like the framing of creation as conflict and balance. The interplay between light and darkness as primordial forces is a classic mythological theme, but you’ve presented it in a way that feels fresh. It doesn't come off as cliche. I especially enjoy how the dualities and discordant echoes shape the cosmos. Each contributes to the emergence of life in a chaotic yet very purposeful way. That feels realistic.

The narrative leans too heavily on abstract concepts like harmony and discord though. It’s not obvious why these things matter. What happens if the balance isn’t maintained? Why is this struggle between light and darkness significant beyond the creation of the physical world? I think that giving the conflict more tangible effects could benefit this. It creates more tension that could make this stand out.

The idea of humans as a synthesis of all forces is powerful too, but it’s underexplored. It doesn't come off the way it was intended to. What does it mean for humans to embody both creation and destruction? That is something that is felt in our real life, so I imagine the fantasy angle could be interesting. I don't see that as it stands. It currently contributes very little to the storyline, unfortunately.

This is extremely imaginative! You’re building a world here, one that feels vast and alive. Though, I wish you expanded on some aspects of the lore.

All the best!

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!

Shalt we commence with the frightful S’more?

Top Graham Cracker - This is about the creation of the world. How with the celestials and energy, life eventually came to be. All of it is nothing at first and then, there is a method to the madness.

Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - This is fine, I like this. If you want to add more, then you can. But I like this.

Chocolate Bar - I loved the introduction of the Divines, they seemed so magical and full of life! I also love the descriptions of how the Earth was created, the stars glittered vividly in my mind. This feels appropriate to describe the creation of the universe, to describe how the fabrics of time collided.

Closing Graham Cracker - A beautiful way to describe how the world came to be, I enjoyed reading it. The world can’t be too perfect or else it would lose its substance. That is where the humans come in. Hopefully all is well and so…

I wish you a fantastic day/night! ^v^
