There is no POVs in this story.

This 20 year old girl sees a little girl get killed by this guy. She has no family her father and mother both died in a plane crash when she 5 years old. She was sent to an Orphanage, her brother doesn't talk to her anymore after their parents died... Until now. Her name is Jessica, she was born December 13, 1994. She lives in Nevada. She has a lot of enemies and secrets.

And then there came a thought to my mind, dark, evil, and depressing. Me sitting in a room with a straight jacket on. The room was padded. Bright white like snow when it’s on the ground. I was screaming my head off then I stopped, thinking to myself “I wanna kill him for real this time, he killed that little girl he deserves to die.” I shouldn’t be in this HELL HOLE.

The sunlight shined through the little square window. I heard loud footsteps coming to my door. Suddenly the heavy metal door swung open, then the orderly came into my room with a tray of yucky lunch. He knelt down next to me and set the tray down in front of me. I looked down at it, “You don’t understand! I shouldn’t be in this freaking dump!!” The orderly looked at me and rolled his eyes, “Listen here girly! You were about to kill an innocent man because you accused him of murdering a little girl. That’s why you’re in here!” I growled at him.

He slapped me across the face, Me trying to hold back my tears wasn’t going to happen. I screamed at him and flipped the tray up with my foot, the scolding hot soup and lumpy mashed potatoes hit his horrifying face. This right here is my chance, my chance to run. I step on the orderly’s throat. “Take this straight jacket off of me right now!!” I take my foot off of his throat, he gets up and takes the straight jacket off of me. “Now don’t tell anyone about this got it?!” He nods. I take his keys and his nightstick from his belt and walk out the heavy metal door locking it behind me. All of the orderlies were in the west wing eating lunch. I saw the front door of the psychiatric hospital, I ran fast like a cheetah. Me running out those double doors felt like winning the lottery.

And then there I was, standing at the killer’s house, breathing heavily but not giving up. I clenched the nightstick in my right hand, opening the back window of his house quietly. Crawling through the window, I see this dark figure sitting in his Lazy-Boy chair watching the football game. I tiptoe to the Lazy-Boy chair like a ballet dancer would if she was dancing to the Sugarplum Fairy. Just as I was about to attack him, he stood up and saw me. “Oh not you again… I’ve had enough of you! I didn’t murder that little girl.” I raised the nightstick and hit him in the stomach, he held his stomach and groaned. “Don’t lie to me! I saw you murder that little girl!” I was getting mad at him, he kept saying that he didn’t murder the little girl but I know he did. I hit him in the head really hard with the nightstick and I kept doing it until he passed out.

Me knowing that I will get caught again I ran out of his house and the psychiatric “Police” were already at the house. I tried to run but they tackled me. And then there I was back in the psychiatric hospital, angry, mad, and screaming. Me in that stupid straight jacket again, I didn’t like it at all. I sat there thinking “Was he telling the truth? Did he really murder that little girl?” The head of the psychiatric hospital came into my room. There was also two orderlies with him. “Ms. Jessica the man that you brutally injured, he didn’t murder the little girl.” He showed me a picture of the guy that actually murdered the little girl. “This is the guy, he murdered the little girl. So now you’re in this psychiatric hospital for 5 years.” I shook my head. “That’s not true!!” I screamed at him. “The guy I brutally injured murdered the little girl!! I saw him murder her!!” The head and the two orderlies walked out of my room. Leaving me, just sitting here staring at the padded wall.

Later that day, one of the orderlies came into my room. He handed me this letter. I looked at it, the envelope was pure white with a tiger stamp in the top right corner. The orderly left slamming the door behind him. Right now I was shaking, I don’t know what’s in this envelope. An hour has past, and there I was with the pure white envelope still in my hands, shaking, scared, and curious. I began to open it up slowly, I started to read it.

Dear Jessica, I am the one who killed that little girl. You may not remember me, because you lost a little bit of memory when you got in that critical car crash. But I used to be there for you all the time. Until we got into that huge argument. Do you remember that huge argument? Because I do. It was so horrible. Anyways, that little girl was in the house when we had that huge argument, she was crying so hard that she could’ve cried herself a river. After the argument, you packed yourself a bag and got in the car. I wasn’t even upset, I was actually glad that you left. But I saw the news and they showed that terrifying car crash you got into. Then I got upset. Well that’s all for right now. Bye Jessica.

The Killer.

Me reading that letter from the actual killer gave me the goose bumps. I wonder what he meant about that the little girl was in the house when we had that huge argument. All I could think about is what he was talking about. Did I actually get in a car crash? I hear a knock on the door and I jump a little getting startled. “Come in” I say. The same orderly that gave me the letter came in with a tray of that yucky food. It was the same kind as before, hot soup that didn’t look good and those disgusting lumpy mashed potatoes. He set the tray down and sat beside me like he wanted to be friendly and have a nice pleasant conversation with me. I looked at him, he looked so familiar to me. “Hi Jessica do you remember me?” I shake my head. “No.” I say harshly. “Who are you and why do you think that I remember you? Cause honestly I don’t remember” I say irritated. He grins.

And there I was face to face with the orderly, staring, confused, and wishing that I could remember him. Flashbacks were going through my head, then my eyes widen. “No! This can’t be!” The “orderly” looked at me. “Do you remember me now?” he said to me. “Yes I do, I wish I didn’t but I do! But I can’t remember your name. What is it?” I say. He chuckles, shaking his head. “My name is Caleb.” He is now smiling. “Caleb? Caleb?” I gasp. “You were my ex-boyfriend. Am I right?” He nods. “Well I must get going.” He gets up and leaves shutting the heavy metal door. “Wait! Did you actually kill her?!” I yell but he can’t hear me.

Leaning against the padded wall thinking about what just happened. After I think for like four long hours, one of the orderlies comes in with another patient. This patient is short with brown hair she has green eyes. She sits down and the orderly shuts the door. “So why are you in here?” I ask. She looks at me. “I’m in here because I tried to commit suicide.” I sit silently. “Wanna know why I am in here?” She nods her head. “I tried to kill an innocent man because I thought he killed this little girl.” Her eyes widen. “Oh wow! By the way my name is Carter. What’s yours?” She looks at me with her emerald green eyes. “Mine is Jessica.” We talk for hours.

After telling each other why we were in here and what are names were, things got serious she asked me about my childhood. I looked at her. “My childhood? Um my parents died in a plane crash when I was 5 years old, my brother was 15 when they died. My brother stopped taking care of me after our parents died and he went to go live with one of his friends. I became an orphan when I was 6 years old. Then I got adopted when I was 10 years old, by these two middle class adults. My step-father didn’t really want to adopt me but he wanted to make his wife happy. My step- mother on the other hand wanted to have a little girl. When I was getting older I got into so much trouble. My brother never wanted to help me but he did stay in Nevada.” She hugs me tightly, “Jessica I’m so sorry to hear that, I would tell you about my childhood but there’s nothing really to tell.”

An orderly walks in. “Carter there is someone here to see you” he looks at her. She nods, “okay.” She gets up and walks out with the orderly.

Heya Hunter, Pretzelsing here for a review of this first chapter of you novel. I gotta say that I had to force myself to finish this chapter, because at some points it was pretty dull and I didn't have the motivation to keep on reading. And I will mention all of my points in my review.

Anyways, let's begin,shall we?

Me sitting in a room

You have to use "I" instead of "me" since that is how you whole story is written. A little tip: You have to have definite POV or no publisher will want to read or publish your novel. Doesn't matter that you don't like them, you have to use them correctly to be grammatically correct. I will not point this out every time, so this is why I though that I should address it directly here. Here is an article that I think you should read.

It says it in there, but I would just like to tell you, that if you decide to write your whole novel in 1st person POV, then you are restricted to things/events looking through her eyes only.

Next thing that I wanted to tell you was: The pacing here is too quick, in my opinion. Everything happens so fastly: her parents die, brother abandons her (in the past), she is in psychiatric hospital, escape, beats a man up(who isn't even guilty), goes back to the hospital, and finds out about Caleb all in one chapter. Woah, I think that you need to slow down and take a step back. Reading this felt like I was riding on a really fast horse, and it's the authors job to pull on the reins. Here is an awesome article about Pacing, and why it's important. I would suggest that you take a look at it.

“I wanna kill him for real this time, he killed that little girl he deserves to die.”

This is a run-on sentence that I think you need to split up: "I wanna kill him for real this time; he killed that little girl and deserves to die."

Me running out those double doors felt like winning the lottery.

I don't think so. Jessica running out those doors was putting herself in unnecessary danger because she was a run-away and mentally ill. If she would have been smart, she could have just stayed in that hospital(and I'm pretty sure that she could have gone out sooner than five years.) I don't understand the logic/reasoning behind this. Honestly, throughout this whole chapter, I thought that Jessica was a villain and crazy, and she deserved to be punished. You didn't evoke any sympathy in me at all.

“Oh not you again…

So many writers make the mistake of not formatting their ellipsis correctly. I have had to repeat it so many times and I will do the same for you. Here is how you grammatically write them:

word space dot space dot space dot
"Oh not you again . . ."

Me in that stupid straight jacket again, I didn’t like it at all.

What? :o Why in the world does Jessica care about how she looks like in jacket? This isn't some fashion display, and right now she has bigger problems to worry about than this trivial thing.

“No.” I say harshly. “Who are you and why do you think that I remember you? Cause honestly I don’t remember

That sentence isn't needed here since you are just repeating the "no" at the beginning of the sentence.

We talk for hours.

What do they talk about? Now I am a big talker and I like to do that, but you need generally way more description here. Specific exact conversation topics are key. Here is just an example of what I would write:

Pretzelsing wrote:We talked about the tan four walls that surrounded our living space, and how impending and doomy they looked to our eyes. We talked about how the food tastes like cardboard in our mouth, and how our tongue rejects it when we touch it. We talk about happier days, when we could fly with the joy of childhood, giggling at old memories of playing in the sandbox alone."

Those are all just examples, but at least the reader gets a sense of what the are talking about. You need to implement this, Hunter. ^_^

Now I want to move onto the general, although there are a lot of nitpicks that I am sure that I missed. One of the most important pieces of writing advice(at least on YWs) is: Show, not tell. This is very important because throughout this whole chapter, there is little to none imagery, which is bad for the reader. It makes the story unappetizing and I don't just want to read more because of it. Here is an article written about Description that my friend wrote. She gives some valid tips there, but I would like to mention that you should use all five senses in your works.

Another thing is, since this is Jessica's story, I want you to show emotion.Breathe emoton into scenes (I know that I am giving you a lot of link-but I really recommend that you at least skim them over to learn some valuable information on improving your chapters. What are here thoughts and feelings during her childhood story? Why does she feel how she feels and what does she feel exactly?

Anyways, I think that this needs a lot of work, but the plot line so far has much potential. Please feel free to use any of these points that I mentioned for your personal improvement and I hope that you grow as a writer.

~Peace Out~

Hi...back. I read the story again, i really want to help you. The plot seems great! You just need help with your writting.

- tell us more about carter. He seems interresting,
- the ex-boyfriend scene is confusing, maybe, if you woud like, you could put it on chapter 2 and spread it out more.
- more details of the man she suspects killed him. Give us a flashback of what happened. A detailed description.
- also, maybe you could put the car crash in the description. Gives more interrest.
- Maybe a description of after the crash, her being pulled out of the car or someone yelling 911.

You should keep on going, with work it will be a great story.

She thinks this man kills a little girl. Carter is a girl also.

Hi... I think you have passion, but i would suggest some Changes. I want to help, so your not forced to do nay of this, okay?
- change the description. Its too straightforward, maybe name the character and dont say this guy.

- no orderly would start screeming, they would try to calm her, not yell at her.

- Make the escape longer, more detailed. Preferbly the whole chapter. Then the rest on chapter 2

- maybe make the letter of the killer smaller and give mor details along the way.

- at the killers house should be longer and detailed too.

Its just to help, okay? Sorry if im being harsh.

this orderly is different. There is a twist about this orderly.
