I Remember Flowers

I don't know where I am, someplace dark and frigid. There is no one around me. There is complete silence and I feel like I'm about to explode out of my skin. My skin....it's glowing. What's happening? How long have I been here? Suddenly, there's a glow. I try to propel toward it but I feel I am frozen on the spot. It shines orange, yellow and blue and is absolutely phenomenally gorgeous...I have to get to it. I must. I try to move my finger, just my finger, and I'm happy to feel it moves a fraction of an inch. That's good, I keep going. I can feel it bend a little more, and then more after that. It finally bends at the knuckle. Then I feel my toes wiggle. I'm surrounded by a viscous liquid. It looks purple in the light of the glow. It feels silky and smooth, yet more oily than water. Am I dreaming? Is this a dream? I try to move again and this time I am more successful, I'm able to move a fraction toward the glowing light. What's in that light? I hold up my hand and see the pure white glow that emanates from it. This is peculiar. I move closer still to the white glow and I begin to hear wind. A slow, calming breeze that I am not able to feel yet. I must get to it! Suddenly the light moves. I decide since I'm in liquid I can probably swim toward it. Just a little further....Ah it's so close now I can smell something pleasant. Something I recognize. But what? Finally! I reach the glow and put my hand out. Suddenly scared, I pull back. What could it be? Will it hurt me? I figure anything is better than the nothingness that surrounds me, so i reach out. It's warm. It feels like warm air against my hand. I like it. Suddenly though and without warning it swallows me. It moves like a slime that first envelops my arm then my shoulder and moves over my entire body. I'm no longer in the dark cold place. I'm in a meadow it seems, with flowers of all different kinds surrounding me. I remember now, I worked with flowers. But when? I couldn't tell you....I feel the wind. And it smells so good.

"You made it. I knew you would come!" a small voice says. It's quiet....I could barely hear it. "I knew you would come." I look over and see a cat looking at me. "My name is Oliver and I've been waiting a very long time to see you"  I approach the cat gingerly. I'm very scared. I am not scared of cats, just of cats who speak to me. In my old world cats only meowed. He was an all black cat, but he had a heart on his side that was white. And he was fairly larger than the cats that I was accustomed to.

"Where am I" I ask him. I thought  myself foolish talking to a cat, but a moment ago I was glowing in liquid that I didn't know either.

"Well you made this world, you don't remember?" He giggles. "You must have needed that hibernation. I hope you're feeling better!"

"Hibernation?" Humans don't hibernate-wait! I look at my arm and see something very peculiar.....SCALES!!! Green and blue scales. I go to a pool of water and look at my face and I have two horns growing out of my forehead.

"Yes my lady, you must have needed it. You've been asleep for five years"

"Where do I go when I sleep?" I asked Oliver.

He shakes his head, "I do not know, but I always wait for you here and you always come back" He rubs against my legs affectionately.

"What am I?" I ask Oliver, "I'm clearly in another world"

"You were just a child when I met you the first time, and we played a game. We played a game where we get to be anything we want. I wanted to be a cat-so here I am....and you said you always wished you could be that. You never gave it a name."

So apparently I wanted to be a scaley monster? I turn around and see a cave. I go to it and find a bed, a desk and flowers laying by a pot. Oliver follows behind-

Suddenly I wake up in a bed. No scales. No horns. My nails are painted pink just like i like them. And daisies are on the nightstand. Whatever dream that was I don't want to have it again. But I can remember the flowers, they were beautiful.

Hi Phoenix!

To begin, welcome to YWS. I've been MIA myself for several years now, so just getting back into the groove of things, but if you have any questions, I'd be happy to try and help!

I really liked the mysterious element to this story and, though it ends with our speaker waking up from what seems like a dream, it seems like some elements of it (or all?) truly did happen. I'm a big fan of blending reality/fiction, so I enjoyed this element of the story! I would keep in mind that the ending "it was all a dream!" can skew cliche, but there are some unique bones here!

I'm very drawn to Oliver's character--so much so that I almost want more of him! Who is he, exactly, in connection to our narrator? I like this tragic element that Oliver is always waiting for our narrator, but I think it would pack even more of a punch if we got a few more crumbs about what they mean to each other. "You were just a child when I met you the first time..." SO INTRIGUING! If you include more info, I think what would work best would be a few more clues rather than outright saying who Oliver is. I hope that makes sense.

One last suggestion, which can amp up the emotional stakes, would be to include more emotional response from our narrator. For example: they feel "scared" in this alternate world, but what does this feel like inside them (inside their stomach, their mind, etc?).

Looking forward to reading more of your writing!

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!

Shalt we commence with the dastardly S’more?

Top Graham Cracker - The main character has a strange dream where she wakes up in a meadow as a dragon-like creature, with a cat named Oliver. Once she goes into the cave that has a human bed in it, she wakes up in the real world. Yet the dream in her mind still lingers.

Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - I really liked reading this, but I think that you could space out some paragraphs to make it flow better. But that’s it!

Chocolate Bar - I like how the main character sort of needs some time to understand her surroundings more in order to know where she is, it shows that this is all a distant memory to her. The cat is like an imaginary friend, but when Oliver mentions that they chose who they wanted to be, it kind of gives the idea that he is human too and played this game with her when she was young, so maybe this person still holds a version of him close to her, along with the memory of flowers.

Closing Graham Cracker - Overall, a rather interesting story with the reflection of childhood and growing up. Of course, with magical elements too. I quite enjoyed reading this and if you ever make more, I’ll be sure to check it out. And so now…

I wish you a fabulous day/night! ^v^
