(A/N – Taylor Swift: Safe and Sound)
It's been seven years since you left. Seven years since you lied. Seven years of questions with no one to give me any answers. Seven years, though I still remember it as though it were yesterday.

“Would you care to dance, Miss Fairwood?” I grin at his playfulness as the house band begin to play Vera Lynn's, 'We'll meet Again'. Elijah holds out his arm and I loop mine through it, hoisting the bottom of my blood red dress with the other. We walk slowly to the middle of the polished dance floor, not saying a word.
Elijah turns to face me, takes my hand in his and places his other palm on the small of my back, never taking his dark blue eyes from mine. My breath catches in my throat as he starts to move me around the dance floor, my ears not hearing the music at all. He shifts his head to the side of mine, breaking our eye contact. I sigh of relief escape my lips. How can this man still have this affect on me?
I'm just starting to get used to the feel of my hand within his when the gentle, romantic moment between us shatters in a heartbeat.
A defeaning explosion tears through the night. If feels as though the whole world moves beneath our feet. Champagne glasses smash within palms and deep cracks race down the ballroom walls. More explosions follow the first in quick succession causing the first wave of panic. The music has gone. The screaming starts.
I snap my head back, trying to pull away from Elijah's embrace. He pulls me closer, tighter, his fingertips digging into my back.
“We need to move,” he says, making me pause. “Trust me.”
People are shrieking, crying and running over themselves to get to out to the London streets. I don't take my eyes off him, which he takes as my sign of agreement.
Elijah takes me by the hand and drags me in the opposite direction, pushing our way through the crowds. Low rumbles vibrate under my feet as more bombs collide with the earth outside.
We skid through an open door way and clamber down a set of stairs, deep under the ballroom where the party was in full swing just moments before. Elijah proceeds to push me to the back of a dark, cellar room, away from any of the street level windows.
He slams the door closed and turns to face me. This is when I notice the hot, heavy tears streaming down my face as adrenaline takes over my body. I try desperately to rub them away, to appear brave and together like he is. I feel his hands on my shoulders.
“Look at me, Erin,” he breathes. I do as he asks. It seems that I can't do anything but when I am with him. “You'll be all right, no one can hurt you now.” I just nod. Trusting him is all I have. He is all I have.
A burnt, orange glow fills the room, lighting up my tear stained face. Another distant crash, shakes the walls that surround me. The war is raging on outside these very windows. I move towards them, wanting to see what is happening out there but Elijah's fingers close around my wrist.
“Don't you dare look outside,” he almost growls. I nod again and sink to the floor, my blood red dress spilling out around me.
Elijah releases me and starts to rummage through the crates that litter the floor of the cellar. I find myself smiling at his practicality. A soldier through and through. He doesn't feel himself unless he is running to rescue someone in need. One of the many reasons I fell so hopelessly in love with him.
He returns with armfuls of candles and begins to place them in a circle around us. He pulls a sleeve of matches from his inner jacket pocket and lights them one by one. The flames dance and flicker as I listen the air-raid siren singing mournfully.
“Don't leave me here alone,” I whisper into the shadows. Elijah settles down next to me, puts his jacket around my shoulders and then pulls me onto his knees. Whilst stroking my hair, his warm breath skims my cheek as he whispers back,
“Just close your eyes. Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound.” The adrenaline slows down, leaving me weak and exhausted. The steady rise and fall of Elijah's chest calms me, believing with all my heart that he'll never let me go.
A golden sprinkle of light flutters over my eyelids. I open my eyes to see dawn creeping through the tiny cellar windows. The candles have burnt out, their light extinguished, but the approaching sun feels warm and comforting...until it isn't. An icy trickle of realisation slides down the back of my neck.
The rise and fall of his breathing has gone. The cellar door open wide. A sob escapes my lips, racking my body.
My Elijah, a soldier through and through. Never himself unless he's running to rescue someone in need.
I cling to the jacket he left draped over me, inhaling his sweet scent. The last thing I have to remember him by. Pain rips through the new gaping hole in my chest when I realise what I know in my heart of hearts that I wish I didn't.

Hi Olive!
SlushySlapped here for a review! I'm just going to jump right in. Looks like AmethystNight got grammar/spelling and such so I'll just give a suggestion or two and my thoughts!
Now, I am all about drama. I love being able to add it. So, instead of a comma, put a period. I'm not a fan of the two 'thoughs' in this sentence. I'd take out the first 'though,' and put something else in it's place.
Should be 'A' not 'I' here.
Here, you've already used, "blood red dress," before. Perhaps you could say, "my crimson dress," instead? Or try to describe the dress differently?
I feel like this is kind of awkward. I'd add a 'like' before himself.
Overall, I liked this! You have wonderful descriptions. One thing to be careful about though, is too much wordiness. Using bigger words is great, but be careful not to use too many. Otherwise it erupts the flow! I love how you incorporated the song into the story as well. Great job on this!
Keep writing!
This is good. The description paints a clear picture but you don't get bogged down with it. The tone of the piece is great and you can feel how much the main character loves Elijah. I'm assuming that he has actually died in the end; otherwise this story would be a lot less romantic than I thought. Here are a couple of improvements you might want to make.
I would start a new paragraph after the dialogue so that it doesn't confuse the reader as to who's speaking.
There's a typo here.
Should be one word.
You don't need the comma here.
You're missing the word 'to' here, after 'listen'.
I think that you may have meant for that sentence to be a part of the paragraph below it. Otherwise, this is very confusing and the comma definitely shouldn't be there. If it wasn't the original plan, I would still suggest making that sentence part of the below paragraph.
Simple but affective, this bit is great.
That's all I have to say really. This was a lovely romantic piece.
Requesting reviews? Happy to help my Darling! (I've been reviewing poetry all day so the odd poetic term may pop up xD)
That's a bit......cliche, in my opinion. Maybe "I can still remember it." or "those days".
I love love loved your descriptions and imagery! It's very vivid! I could see everything happening before me!
The dialogue worked very well. I would have maybe liked to see more warmness in Elijah's voice, but other than that, I loved the dialogue.
I can't really critique this a huge amount. Everything sees to work so well. It's not exactly my type of story, but I liked it all the same!
:'( the ending. So sad.
I'm horrible at reviewing stories, but you request, and I'll deliver!

Hi darling!
No grammar nitpicks for me to touch upon, so huzzah! Now we can get straight to the nitty gritty~
You definitely threw me into the loop. I was confused at the beginning, like why are they attacked all of the sudden? Then you started to incorporate the song lyrics into their dialouge and suddenly my world made sense again. x3
While we are talking about it - the attack. Por que? I don't understand. They're in London, yes? So who would possibly attack them in London? Details! Background information! I must know it all. The reader is always hungry to know.
Another thing I didn't like was how you mentioned "seven years since you lied." Who? Elijah? When did he lie? I didn't remember reading that and I even looked back. I'm still confused. I suggest you perhaps explain that more, or in simpler terms to me below cause I am slow sometimes. x3
Besides that, amazing job with the song! You really brought it to life and it was a pleasure to read. I enjoyed reading it!
~Iggy
Igloo, it means that it was seven years ago that Elijah had lied by saying "Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound." The reason he lied is because he had said that the previous night, and when Erin woke up the next morning, she was all alone, so it ended up just being "Come morning light, you'll be safe and sound." No longer "You and I'll." Just Erin, no Elijah.
Makes much sense! Thank you for clearing that up! <3
Thanks you beaut!! It's the night of the blitz..8th of Sete, ber 1940...world war 2. Germans dropped bombs on us at night like a surprise firework party!! Guess I should have made this clearer though. Darn.
Thanks lateritic for clearing that up! You're spot on. That boy LIED!
Olive <3
Robbie here!

Wow, Olive I'm really impressed with this piece! It's so sad and tragically beautiful... I really want to know what the hell happened to him!!! And obviously, so does she.
Let me just start with a couple of things:
First, the line,
"I sigh of relief escape my lips"
I'm pretty sure the "I" is supposed to be an "A" and "escape" is supposed to be "escapes." But that's minor and not really important. It sure as hell didn't take me away from the rest of the story.
The only other thing that I could pinpoint was the description of the dress. The thing that threw me off was the fact that you described her dress as being "blood red" twice and seeing as how the story is short it was rather noticeable.
However, aside from these two incredibly small details I was really blown away. I want to know more about the characters- what happened to her during the war, as well as how she managed to survive it on her own, and, especially, what the hell happened to Elijah!!! However, I guess that isn't the real point of the story... The point is that even after seven years she's still hung up on the guy who saved her and then vanished into thin air.
If you ever decide to continue with this idea and add to it PLEASE let me know! If you hadn't noticed, I have a sick attraction to tragic romance.
Thanks Robbie
it's for a competition! Write a short story based on a song that's given to you. Mine was Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift. Fingers crossed it does well!
