Normal

by Logan15

So I just kind of threw this down after an argument with someone. I looked over it once or twice, but not much. Just a warning. It's probably not that good. No haters please.

---

I am just as normal as everyone else.

I know that I'm so

Very

Very

Far from the usual human being,

But that doesn't mean I'm not normal.

Everyone has their own perception of the word,

So everyone is normal,

But no one is

All at the same time.

It was said to my face

That someone is "normal"

Because they were

Straight

And

Cis.

I'm what most people

Would consider a guy

Who is so obviously,

Deeply,

Completely,

Interested, or crushing,

On a guy.

Which is something I have

All the right to do.

All the right to be.

And you know what?

That hurt.

A whole lot.

I'm not doubting my "normality"

Because I know that I'm

Very, very far

From normal.

It hurts because it was said to my face.

It hurts because people don't realize

That I

That we

Are just as normal as anyone

And everyone

Else

I may not be the average human.

And I know that I'm far from that.

I'm not very athletic,

I'm not strong,

I'm not tall,

Or very good-looking,

I don't have cool hair,

I don't feel like I belong in my body,

I don't do "normal" sports.

I'm nerdy,

I have an unhealthy obsession

With corn dogs

And dice,

So many people hate my guts.

I hate my guts most days.

But I am so, so proud of all of that.

For some reason,

That's what I love about myself.

The same things I hate about myself,

Are the things I love most about myself.

And I love it.

I love it.

I don't care what others think of me.

No one should.

They don't actually matter in the end.

I just care that what they say

Could be hurting

Someone else.

Someone who does care what others think,

Who has a really hard time,

Ignoring the comments.

Someone who is like me

Uncomfortable as themself,

Not happy with who they are.

Someone who needs a little help

Navigating the world,

As someone the world hates.

Someone who doesn't know

That it's okay to not be normal.

Someone who doesn't know

That they're actually

Really,

Really,

Cool.

I know I'm not the usual person

I'm not the average human

I'm not "normal"

But I

But we

But everyone

And I mean everyone

Not a single person excluded

The queers, the not queers,

The straights, the not straights,

The jocks, the nerds,

The nice ones, the mean ones,

Everyone,

No one excluded

No one excluded,

Deserve as much respect,

As much love,

As much acceptance,

As the next person.

It doesn't matter

Who the person is.

I don't care.

I don't care.

It doesn't matter.

So just know

That I don't care.

That it doesn't matter.

No one is "not normal."

And no one is "normal."

The word doesn't even have a true meaning.

A real meaning.

A 100 percent accurate

Definition of a "normal" person

Doesn't exist

So why use it at all

When referring to a person

Or a group of people?

Why?

I am just as normal as everyone else.

Hello Logan15! Welcome to YSW - appears you haven't been here awhile! I'm just getting back here myself and happened upon this little ditty to review.

For starters, let's take the word "normal" and toss it into a garbage disposal to be disintegrated into pulp. With the billions of people on this planet, I am a firm believer that there is no "normal." Those who classify things within that category are boring, judgmental, and/or prefer to live in a world of false reality. Each person brings an individualism and uniqueness that does not match any other person - we are each our own beautiful creations.

Now let's get to the review!

First off, I love the repetition of "very," "all the right to," "it hurts because," "I love it," "really," "I know I'm not," "no one excluded," "I don't care," "it doesn't matter" all emphasize meaning. Repetitive lines really can showcase emotion, intent, and meaning. These do this very well!

Second, you are absolutely correct. No one is but everyone is. We each only understand "normal" from our perspectives, how we see the world, and those in it. EVERYONE deserves respect and to be treated like human beings worthy of love and care.

Third, whoever said that there is a specific definition of normal may have had that truth to them, but one person's truth does not ever personify EVERYONE's truth.

Fourth, the line

I have an unhealthy obsession / With corn dogs / And dice,
made me giggle. It gave this already personable and relatable poem an even bigger personality!

Fifth, I suggest changing the "themself" to "themselves" to make that line sound accurate. It seems the tenses do not match up and is worded strange when read aloud.

Lastly, I love this entirety and what you have brought out within it. Kudos to you for writing a piece that reminded me to question the status quo and where we find "normal."

Wishing you well wherever you are in the world,

Thank you!!
This is some really great advice and encouragement! It means a lot to be honest.
I personally like my use of "themself" vs. "themselves" since I'm technically referring to one person, or at least that's how I meant it. I do really appreciate the advice, though! Everything you've said is very helpful.
Thank you!! You are amazing! Have a wonderful day/night!

I really like this poem! I agree with you, the word "normal" tends to have a subjective meaning, it is different to different people. I don't believe anyone is ever truly "normal" or not, we're all just our unique individual selves. I like humankind better that way! Whoever thought that we should expect humans to fit into the mold that society creates must've been extremely dull-minded. I look forward to reading more work from you ^^

I love this so much. I honestly try not to use the word "normal" anymore (well, except in statistics class when I have to describe a normal distribution xD) because it's so true-- what even is normal? We are all our own fantastically weird selves :]] Thanks for sharing this poem!

Thank you!! I don't like using it while describing a person, but when describing a situation or something then it's not as bad. Have an amazing day/night!
