To Wander Without Walking

So much depends upon the wandering mind,

looking for a stable landing,

where no repercussions roam.

^So Much Depends Upon Poem^

A young girl of the name Sophie walks her familiar street home after school. The crystal raindrops begin to tumble down from the gray clouds. She quickly pulls out her used red umbrella and continues walking. Untouched by the rain, she enters her home. Silently, she places her key on it’s shelf. Suddenly, a siren blares from outside. Sophie quickly runs to the TV, only to find there is a tornado right in her area. A bit frantic, she grabs the portable radio and runs to the basement.

Once the door is closed, Sophie carefully walks down the creaky steps. She remembers her younger days, where her friends and she made a ‘town’. Each person was a different store. Sophie reflects on how much those times have changed. Wishing she brought her laptop, Sophie curls up on the sofa and surfs the radio stations. When she finds the weather station she places the radio on the small table beside her. As radio plays as white noise in the background, she loses herself within her mind. She drifts off into what she thinks is sleep, as she stares down the opposite wall. Sophie silently thinks of everything, of her friends, her dysfunctional family. She can’t remember what is real and what is her imagination.

The smell of roses hits her nose. She opens her eyes wide as she hears water trickling down. The scene before her is no longer her musty basement, but a large garden with no exit, nor an entrance. Taking in her surroundings, she stands up. She begins walking around the enticing garden, noting the fact she is wearing a childhood dress from her 5th birthday. Hearing faint noises in the distance, Sophie steps toward her left. A small movement captures her attention. She bends down to see a small flower, inside that flower was indeed her 5th birthday party, little Sophie swinging a bat at a piñata unicorn on top of her father’s shoulders. Sophie leaves that flower to see another. This flower show’s her elementary school concert, Sophie singing the solo of “Lean on Me”. Sophie wanders around her garden, watching and remembering the good times. Not once has she seen a memory from this year, or the last, just memories of happy times.

Sophie’s a bright girl, she overthinks many things, and of course she will be thinking of what this place may be. Her first conclusion was she must have been dreaming. But, dreams are never this livid, nor do dreams have this much detail. So that option was marked off. She concluded that this is farther then a dream, farther then ‘zooning out’; she is indeed trapped in her mind. Her mind is only giving out memories of happy times, for she does not want to relive the bad ones. Frustrated and tired, Sophie sits on the dew-glazed grass. She repeats over in her head, none of this matters. I have a future, that this isn’t my life, not even half of my life. So, this can’t hold me back. With that thought she closes her eyes tightly, and wishes to be back within the musty basement.

Makes you think about how much times have changed and sort of a coming-of-age story. The flowers can symbolize the happy memories, as flowers are respectably happy plants. The basment could symbolize her current situation with being a teenager with problems. I like how when times are at their scariest, including the fact that there is a tornado outside, her mind tries to escape itself. Other than that, my only issues were with the final paragraph. Its nothing big, just that it kind of seems to step away from the rest of the story. Perhaps the concluding paragraph could be switched to first person. But I couldn't have done it better myself! Great story :)

I would just like to say one thing. I know that this story can get a bit complex, but there's no need to flame about it. If you don't get it that's okay. If it bothers you so much, just come back another time, sometimes your just thinking with the wrong frame of mind. Also I pulled a bit of 'Inception' at the end. So you can believe she escapes her mind or she doesn't, there is no right answer. Please review and tell me your opinions, it's okay to be a little rude, I won't mind all that much.
Love,
