Raison d'etre

Graying and withered at death's ominous gate; such is the end's advent. A sturdy lock shall never adorn the gate, and for this one must be eternally grateful.

These are the beliefs of a person in love with life. Do we, as people who live and love to do so, ever differ in regards to such matters?

"To do so - to disagree - would be shamelessly quixotic, Richard."

"You're fundamentally cynical." Richard did not fear questioning Christopher, as most peple did. Christopher had the vocabulary and argumentative ammunition to verbally castrate anybody - regardless of how close he was to them.

And there they were - two men refusing to be burdened with the raucous and inspid anti-intellectualism of the 2010s.

"Grim is our time, Richard."

These men, eighteen years of age, had long been of the view that something needs to be done in this world - but what? This had long been their problem, this uncertainty. But they wanted to change something. It's merely that "something" was not sufficient.

"Politics", Christopher had commanded.

"What?"

"You heard me. This is our raison d'etre. We've been wallowing in self-pity for far too long - wading through the depths of social despair."

Christopher never said things merely for effect - he would never partake in such a selfish and meaningless action, and Richard knew that he wasn't beginning to now.

"Okay, so why politics?" Richard inquired, desperate to be serendipitous and discover the motivation behind his friend's decision.

"It has been a while since we've spoken purposefully regarding anything else, that's why."

Richard contemplated this retort. It was true - they had been frequently verbally wandering in the garden of politics recently - the evils of the right-wing being the primary concern.

It had been four hours since they had begun to drink - Christopher had always been the heavier drinker. Somehow, however, it never seemed to go to his head. Or his mouth.

The pub was dingy, decrepit and teeming with suspect irony - two young intellectuals finding a haven in that which so many morons have access to.

In a simple few hours, they had deducted their raison d'etre. As politicians, they knew that the world would be at their feet - but must never be in their hands.

This piece is interesting. I feel as if the message that is being sent is that the 1990s generation is a generation of sheep and there are only a handful of people such as Richard and Christopher that have the intellectual abilities to realize this. Thus, they believe that to change all of this they must enter the realm of politics.

This piece is very Marxist. Christopher and Richard are obviously portrayed as (rather pretentious) intellectual elites with a vendetta against the evils of the right wing. Christopher and Richard follow the same line of thinking as the intellegensia of Eastern Europe in countries like Poland and Czechoslavakia, that they are the heroes of the general masses and that they can see because of their intellectual capabilities the best way for the people to be governed. I am wondering if this is where this piece originated from. If not, there is a lot that you can research about people like Christopher and Richard in Eastern European history and the creation of the many Communist states due to intellectuals similar to these men.

To better this "story" I think that one thing that you will need to do is either change the voice of the narration into the voice of an actual character because it sounds as if a person is telling the story instead of the story being presented, meaning there is a lot of emotion and opinion in the narration. I would think that it would make more sense to have a third character narrating.

Thank you very much for looking at my work. As I am a left winger (I'm socialist), you're right, this did have some of my opinion projected onto the characters. It was also about how much more powerful one becomes when they discover their focus in life.
