Limerence (Edited)

PreviousNext

The deep aching in my chest
in my heart.
How the stomach feels after drinking too much water.
How it feels to see you
unable to be near you.

Don't smile.
Don't breathe my way.
It only creates false hope:
the Idea that you think of me as much as I do you.

Don't say hello.
Don't look my way.
Don't gaze with clever blue eyes.
I have no way of knowing
if you admire or scrutinize.
I'm plagued by your indifference.
Reject me or bring me closer.

Stripped of all common sense
soul laid bare
vulnerable to the trickery of dopamine and
delusional high praises.

Highs and lows,
dreams and nightmares,
a bitter longing,
then emptiness.

This is addiction.
This is not sweet.
This is not warm.

This is not love.

Hi! I know this is like a year after you wrote this, but I basically wanted to see if there was anything on limerence on YWS, and I stumbled upon your poem (the only one on limerence I think???) - and it did not disappoint.

I know exactly how you feel, it's just so weird that loads of people don't know what it is (my laptop even underlines the word "limerence" in red as if it's not spelt correctly...) , which is why I admire you so much for writing a poem about it.

The actual poem was really powerful, the whole way through I was just thinking about how well you expressed limerence, it was literally perfect. Especially the blue eyes part... I can definitely relate to that ;-)

I was just wondering how you realized you were limerent and what you experience with limerence was, and why did you write this poem? PM me if you want... or if you don't want to say I completely understand. Thank you anyway for writing such a beautiful poem, sorry this review (well... not exactly a review) was so late.

Hey!

I love this poem. It's very emotional and it's written in a way that makes it feel personal - it affects the reader. This is a sign of a very talented poet, so congratulations!!

I love the third stanza in particular, how you bring in an uncertain rhyme that builds up a nice flow to the work. The ending too, is amazing. Grammar wise, I feel it may have benefited with full stops on the ends of addiction, sweet and warm to emphasise it more, but it is still such a nice way of adding effect and ending bitterly.

There are some capitalisation issues, like "Idea" and it is often the way to not capitalise new lines after enjambement, for example the 'If' in "I have no way of knowing / If " doesn't need to be capitalised because it is in the same sentence, but the nice thing about poetry is that you don't have to follow the rules, so it's up to you if you want to keep it how it is.

Really, I have nothing else to say. It's gorgeous, beautifully written and with deep meaning. I don't often delve into the romantic poetry section but I'm honestly glad I did today. I hope to read more from you soon!

Thank you, I really appreciate it! To be honest I wasn't thinking about grammar while I wrote this (or after, as you can see). I'll definitely have a look at it because I think it could be greatly improved upon. Thanks again for the suggestions and kind words. Very encouraging :)

This is very heartfelt poem yet you managed to word it seemingly effortlessly with simplicity. I enjoyed it a lot and could relate to some of the emotions you expressed. I just wanted give you a tip about formatting on YWS in case you didn't already know. At the end of each line in a stanza hit 'shift' 'enter' instead of just 'enter' and there won't be as much space in between your lines. Then when you reach the last line of your stanza, hit 'enter' like normal and you will have more space between each stanza. I hope that made sense, it's a little hard to explain.

Though my favorite part of your poem was the end because I could relate so well to it, my favorite lines in your poem were the ones in the first stanza that went,

Its how the stomach feels after drinking too much water

Its how my heart feels after seeing you but not being near you

I really liked how you compared these two things. My only advice for you in the first stanza is that you don't really need to repeat the word heart in the last line. It just sounds a little redundant. I would change it to say, "It's how it feels seeing you but not being near you" Also, all of the its in these two lines should be changed to it's.

Anyways, great job on this, and keep writing!

Thanks for the formatting advice, I definitely did not know that. Thank you for your review! I just re-read the first lines and I agree the word 'heart' is redundant. Thank you again for your review!

Okay, I'm going to try to Review this, even though I'm not good at love, nor at reviewing poetry. Because this is no strenght of mine, please do not Think badly of me in case this is shit. But I will try my best.
Personally, when i write poetry, or anything else, I write in a whole nother style than you do. Your way of Writing seems to very much rely on the Beauty of simplicity. And you are good at it. With just these simple Words you manege to create something beautifull. I also really liked what the poem was about, even though it is something i cannot relate to. Especially the ending was very good. Sure, you still have room for improvement, but you are good at Writing and you write in your own way. Keep doing that!!! (And i probably didnt say anything usefull...)

Thanks for the review. You were very encouraging, and that's definitely useful.

Hey!

Wow. I don't usually review poetry because I think it is often extremely personal and I'm never sure if I've interpreted it correctly. However, your poem really impressed me with how well it was written and I felt like I could relate to some of the emotions you touched upon.

I particularly loved the first three verses. I could analyse every line but I think that would just be boring for you because I'd only end up saying how much I liked each one. So I thought I'd pick out the lines/sections that really impacted me.

"Don't smile

Don't breathe my way.

It only creates false hope:

The Idea that you think of me as much as I do you."

Oh Gosh, this is just exactly how I feel right now. I think the reason this works so well is how simply it is worded. You haven't thrown every adjective in the english language at the poem or tried to be complex, everything seems straight-forward and as it is. Blunt, maybe. Regardless, it works well.

"Don't say hello.

Don't look my way.

Don't gaze with clever blue eyes

I have no way of knowing

If you admire or scrutinize

I'm plagued by your indifference.

Reject me or bring me closer"

Sorry, I know I said I wasn't going to just quote the whole verses and only pick out what I particularly loved, but I loved this whole verse and to pick out individual lines wouldn't make as much sense. I'm actually rather unnerved by how well this is describing what I feel at present. "I'm plagued by your indifference." Is my favourite line of the whole poem. This verse is fantastically written. Again, the simplicity of the first three lines, each being a command - don't. It shows...strength, maybe that's the word I'm looking for I don't know.

I do agree with my fellow reviewer that the only part I didn't love as much (though I did still thoroughly enjoy it) was the verse about time and distance, though I understood the sentiment behind it and what you were trying to convey.

Overall, one of the best poems I've read in a long time. Keep writing, you have an amazing talent.

Hey, I totally wouldn't mind if you went line by line. Thank you so much for the positive review, I was kinda nervous about putting this up, but decided I had to do it. The time and distance lines, I think, was a filler. Although, I like the last two lines in that stanza. Again, thank you for your review!

No problems! It's a very good poem you have here! I liked those last two lines a lot too, I was going to mention it in the review but didn't. Thought I'd let you know. Well done on a fantastic poem.
