Review

Hey there! I'm gonna give you a review, which may take a little while as this is rather long. I'm gonna give my general thought and impressions after I nitpick a little.

"Cruelty can be righteously opposed, eventually dismissed. A freewheeling carelessness with your cares is something else again."

I had to re-read this bit as it didn't make a whole lot of sense. Your vocabulary for the first paragraph is excellent- I had to google "phantasmagoric" and the rest sounded simply lovely. That is, besides those two lines, where the effect is lost a bit.

"Hanwell Snr came to Hanwell like a comet"

Sr is a slightly better way of saying Senior. It just looks a little nicer, nothing major wrong there.

"being as unreal to him as broadband or goblins."

I just liked this bit. I have an eye for creative use of similes and this ticks my boxes.

"Hanwell himself kept faith with scientific explanations. He knew nothing whatsoever of science."

I also liked this grand bit of characterisation. You have a good style and a knack for the ironic showing here.

"He powered along a newly built stretch of the A20,"

I know I'm supposed to be nitpicking, but you've researched this and I want you to know that it shows. It's good to see you've put the work into this story.

"(laughing till he cries)"

Hanwell Sr then goes on to talk for a little while. Can you say a long sentence while laughing yourself to tears? Maybe work a little on this section just so it feels a little more fluid.

"Of their conversation, Hanwell could retain practically nothing, finding it quite as unreal as their dream talk earlier."

Another nice bit. You're subtle, yet revealing, which I like a lot. This piece reads slow, but it keeps the level of interest up with sentences like this one.

Overall, as I'm sure you can tell, I love your writing style. Your characterisation, description and language are impeccable and I found this very enjoyable to read. However, the one big problem I had with the story is that at points it didn't make much sense. Maintaining tension through mystique is important and useful, but I think you do it just a little much. I wasn't sure who was who for the first few paragraphs, and for much of the story found myself lost in the description. I loved it, but it detracted a little from the plot. I had no idea where I was, only that it was very pretty and sounded lovely.

Perhaps with extra parts this would feel more clear, but the narrative also jumps around a lot and it makes the plot hard to follow. Especially the last line here, but I suppose that was intended to throw the reader off a little. Anyway, I'd be interested to see more of this so do let me know when you write more (if you're planning to), or if you edit this at all.

Good job though, writing something that sustains interest for that length of time is impressive and I'd like to see more from you.

Keep writing :D

Review

I'm sorry that this has been left for nearly a month with no reviews. It is very long! But I have read it all, and it is so good, and really interesting!
I am really impressed with this story and I'm glad that I bothered to read to the end!
Your grammar and spelling are spot on throughout, so nothing to suggest there. The story line is really interesting and I greatly enjoyed it.
I'm curious to know whether this is true and if you are really a female Hanwell and Hanwell is your father and Hanwell Snr. your grandfather who you never met. I found the voice of the narrator quite interesting and the way they were writing it having been affected by the way Hanwell Snr affected his son.
I think you did a really good job of going through all those years, telling us just the things that we need to know to understand the relationship between the two. It also added to the feeling that so much of Hanwell's life was his father's selfish actions and that this was a really big part of what was him. I found it interesting how the absent parent seemed to have had more effect than the present parent on Hanwell.
I can kind of identify with this story because my father and his father had a similar sort of relationship. My Dad's dad left before my dad was born and never really bothered to respond to my dad's attempts to get in contact with him or to meet his grandchildren and my dad has had problems with relationships and stuff throughout his life and i think it's because of that.
In conlusion, this story is really well-written and has real insight into people and the relationships between them. If you post more stuff I'd really want to read it, so please tell me when you do :D
