There's a narcissist in the mirror

by Hadj
PreviousNext

They told me "You cannot love yourself." And they were right, I don't and I can't. I swear on my life, I practically hate myself. But on that sweet summer morning, when I sat on the grass, staring in to the shimmering crystal pool, my reflection fell in love with me.

His eyes were glimmering, like the mid-morning sun, his lips blossomed like the fruit upon the trees. Dear god, that man was beautiful. I stared intently on my perfect copy, but forced myself to look away. One can't live their life in the mirror. That's when it happened, that's when it spoke to me.

Darling! Darling, don't leave me!

I turned back to the water, and I admit, I was afraid. I struck my hand quickly into the water, breaking the mirror image. The water cleared, and my reflection smiled.

Darling.... darling....my sweet love

I examined the image of perfection. Never in heaven had an angel shown so beautifully. Never in hell had a fire burned so insane. My heart was torn between the temptations of my flawless image and the demands of the harsh realities.

"Go away," I demanded. "I do not love you."

Please... don't leave me my darling

My reflection smiled and I could see the lust in its gleaming eyes as easily as the sun in the sky. I reached towards it, longingly, but stopped myself with a heavy heart.

"I cannot love myself"

But you can love me..... Darling my darling, just one kiss.

As I stared at the divinity before me, my eyes burned; my heart danced; my soul rejoiced.

"Dear god forgive me," I whispered, and leaned over, touching my delicate lips to the beauty in the pool.

Just one kiss. That was all I could give, for the water sucked the very life from my lacking body. I fell helplessly into the arms of my lover, forever to join in his delight.

They were right, I cannot love myself, but myself can love me.

This was great. I literally have nothing to review so how's about I just say a bunch of nice things?

I liked the ending. It was refreshing because for once I knew what was going to happen as soon as the reflection asked for a kiss. I also liked your last line, it provided a lot of closure and was just a great ending.

I examined the image of perfection. Never in heaven had an angel shown so beautifully. Never in hell had a fire burned so insane.

I liked how you used the word insane instead of intense. It was a nice choice of vocab and I really liked it. Keep writing!

XOXO,

Thanks for the review ^.^

GrapeNerd here to review (but is it really a review?) your amazing work.

To be honest I don't really find anything wrong with this. IT's just really really good, and i love this new idea of the story of Narcissus. Who knows, maybe this is really what happened, I mean, it's totally possible.

*eyes widens and whispers* are you a demigod?

Anyway, this is a really really reALLY GREAT piece and please never stop writing, you beautiful writer you.
Cheers!

Thank you so much for the review and follow!

Hey there!

Ok wow! What can i say this piece of work is just amazing. The imagination is just flawless and it gripped me to my seat from the very beginning till the end. Kudos to you. Fab piece of work!

I loved your way of narration. It was very intriguing and the title itself was very intriguing. I think the title is one of the most important things to consider when writing up a story and specially with the type of story that you have written the title plays an even more important role. So really congrats to you for that.

Other than that hat can I say I really loved it and I really do hope that you keep on writing these sort of stuff. So just let your imagination go wild!

pm me if you want reviewing and let me know when you post more!

yo yo, veeren here to review this fab-o piece you've written here.

alright, first i have to get a few nitpicks out of the way.

They told me "You cannot love yourself." And they were right,

your punctuation and such, much like mine, is kinda wacky. you need a comma after 'me', and if you were to write a quote like this (at least i believe), it should be in italics not quotes. it should also end in a comma, since you're continuing your thought after. the last comma however should be a period. it will give the readers a break and make the intro flow much smoother.

I stared intently on my perfect copy, but forced myself to look away.

this is like saying you looked left and right at the same time. its not what you're saying that's wrong, just how you say it. what you should do is add the word trying (or another synonym) after 'I' to show that one action was attempted while another prevailed.

Darling.... darling....my sweet love

two things here. first is the simple spacing error after the second ellipsis. yeah, add a space. second, these should be three period ellipsis since you're using them to emphasize a pause in speech. a four period ellipsis, when being used in it's true form of omitting text, is when you're leaving out the end of a statement and it's followed by a period (which mean it's the three regular ones plus the period, go figure).

"Go away," I demanded. "I do not love you."

nothing major, but the first period should be a comma since you're continuing the dialogue.

"I cannot love myself"

here you just forget the period.
also, you add the period to the end of the reflection's thoughts once but not the other time. i say end them all with a punctuation mark.

I whispered, and leaned over,

i'd take the first comma out.
other than that everything's fair game xp

anyway, on to the story itself. a brilliant concept i must say. very rarely do i see a piece that truly emphasizes the psychology of any type of person (a narcissist, in this case). you've done a brilliant job bringing us into the mind of a person in love with their self. both the thoughts and the actions are reflective of people we can relate to in today's society, though unlike in greek mythology, i dont think take it to the length you did in this here work. but who know, maybe it's all one long hyperbole and im just taking it too literally.

besides that, you did slack on a few things. you were very poetic with your words, but it was more childish poetic than anything. in a sense your descriptions of the character's emotions were done through the use of similes and metaphors, giving this the whole poetic vibe, but it wasn't executed the best it could be. one thing i'd recommend taking a look back at is your word choice. now this isn't something that's easy to improve, but it isn't difficult either. to make your story flow the best it can, you need the right diction. now this doesn't mean picking words that are long and hard to pronounce just to look sophisticated, but to use words that are appropriate to the tale you're telling. get what i mean?

otherwise great work. i hope to see more from you in the future.
