I really like this poem, and unlike Magpie, I actually enjoyed the repetition. The poem's nice, clean and just very precise. I like the last stanza particularly.
Didn't really have any mistakes for me to correct, so all I have to say is keep writing, and welcome to YWS, you're already off to a great start.
Hi there.
I like how you keep the same images throughout the whole poem. It's nice, simple, and focused.
I think there are a few issues with it, however.
So much repetition makes my brain glaze over. I think that the last line of each stanza is fine to repeat, as the last one changes and makes much of the forward movement in the poem. However, the repetition of "I am a paper man/ inside a paper house" is very difficult to read over and over with seemingly no reason for repetition. In such a short poem, it would be unlikely that the reader would forget that this man is made of paper, or that he lived in a paper house. To fix this, I would write it like so:
I am a paper man,
inside a paper house.
I'm away from cardboard people,
and even though I'm lonely,
I don't think that I'll come out.
My innards are paper thin,
as I am paper, too,
and paper tears so easily,
I know I can't come out.
It's not a perfect rewrite because you're the author, and you need to find the perfection. But take mine into account: much less repetition. The whole poem is contained in two stanzas, and less is more in this case.
It was a pleasure to review your piece. Happy writing.
Hi, and welcome to YWS!!!
Here to review.
I like this; it's very simple, but almost in an innocent way. It works well with the concept of a breakable ("paper") person existing in a world where he can so easily be torn.
A few suggestions. The first is to get rid of some of the punctuation; not every line has to have this break in the timing, and it makes it jolting in some places that shouldn't jolt. For example, I would write "I am a paper man/Inside a paper house,/Away from cardboard people;/I don't think I'll come out." ***I also changed one comma to a semicolon, because it seemed more suitable in that situation.***
The 2nd stanza has a misspelling - "lonely" - and again has too much punctuation, but both things can easily be fixed.
The last stanza is definitely my favorite, because it brings it full-circle and makes you really empathize with the character. The last two lines are quite sad and defeated, realizing that it's only in the nature of this person to break, that "paper tears so easily." </3
It's a simple poem, but I really do like it, and hope to see more of your work soon. Keep writing, and best wishes. xx
