Ode to a Bat

by CatSamuelson

Published July 6, 2011

Creature of darkness and terror of night,
Who dances in deepening, purple twilight,
Who hunts on the wings of the starry expanse
And clutches the dusk in a death-lock romance.

You're loathed by the many and loved by a few,
For rumors and legends of death follow you,
The fear of you permeates storybooks old,
As mother to daughter your tales have told.

Yet are you as fierce as the ancient myths say?
Ah no!--gentleness hides behind your dark face.
A juxtaposition of natures you are,
A beast and a beauty, a shadow and star.

This flowed well, the rhymes were good and unforced, and you made bats seem... enrapturing. So, my comments will be blue.

I don't have much of anything new to say here, except great work! :)

Hm... not too much I can say about this that hasn't already been expressed. But I figure since this is just that great, it deserves another full review of gushing. xD You're welcome.
I have to say, I'm so jealous of your rhyming. It works perfectly, with no rhyming words with itself or their plural forms. Thank you for that. xD The rhythm also appears to be flawless.
It doesn't hurt that I'm a huge fan of animals typically seen as "evil" despite how utterly illogical that view may be.
The last two lines are my favorite, so lovely. :)
I think I see a typo though: "Ah no!--gentleness hide(s) behind your dark face."
Really, really awesome work.

I really like this! It's so simple and yet you use big words, which even it out. Your rhyming patterns (is that the right term?) are excellent and the flow is very nice.

Good work! Go bats!

This is wonderful, I love it!
Your last two lines are the ones that stuck out the most to me, and are pretty much my favorite lines.
I really loved reading this, because I'm one of the strange people who actually like bats. (Which is why I was curious enough to open and read this!)
Your description, imagery, and rhyme were perfect! This is probably one of the best writings I've read on here so far.
Please, keep on writing. : )

BRAVO!
Let me say that was one of the best things I've read recently. Your rhyme was incredible and your language was perfect and strong. I never thought someone could make a poem about a bat so enrapturing. Brilliant!
