It doesn't Hurt...I Swear It doesn't

In Her name is Jessica

PreviousNext

She snaps from her delirious trance, pulling away from the mirror. Blood stained fingertips shaking, still curled like the claws of some sort of monster. The bloodied and crushed girl staring back at her seems unsurprised at this returning, in spite of the promises and oaths sworn only the eve prior. Tired eyes plead to cleanse themselves of the horrible image reflected back at them, but to no avail. There are no tears left. The sobs still find their way to her throat, violently shaking her crumpled body in waves like that of a waterless ocean. She covers her eyes, unwilling to see the open wounds that taunt her. The burning scabs that scream her name, shout her insecurities, proclaiming her weakness for all the world to see and scorn. The darkened scars laugh beneath the surface, whispering, a deafening, screaming whisper that rings in her ears. They cry a single word that haunts her: "Again"

No more, no more. Trying hopelessly to clear her clouded head, pulling her hands from her face, she dares to glance at the stranger again. The reflection gazes back at her, eyes brimming with pity and distain. If only she were stronger. If only she could even begin to comprehend the ever eluding reasoning behind her seemingly inexplicable self destruction...her insanity.

If only she were stronger...she could be beautiful, she could be happy. She'd seen strong people. Strong people were successful and happy. Strong people didn't tear themselves apart against their own will...did they? Strong people weren't to be found crumpled on a bathroom floor, blood stains on their clothes. That's where she belonged....the girl who picked at her skin.

Man, this is… amazing.

I have a friend - but I won't say her name. I probably have this wrong, but this is about depression and cutting - is it not? Sorry, I'm not good at these things! :(

I know how it feels. Seeing her cut every day is painful for me, and I've been through hard times as well, so I know how it feels - though I never self-harmed. But the way you captured it, it brings back some of those memories of being in a totally black void, nowhere to go… I loved how you described everything. Amazing job.

You are awesome!

Thanks :) To answer your question, yes it is about depression but it's not specifically about cutting. It's about a condition called dermatillomania (skin picking disorder) but it could definitely be about cutting as well. I also have a friend who cuts...it really does hurt to see that...
Thank you so much for your review <3

This is so intense, and it is perfectly fitting for the point I think you're trying to get across, for the point I think you were trying to get across. You have a decent amount of details, and that really helps immerse the reader in your story. I just think maybe it'd be better if you had more. As in, like, backstory, or something. Other than that, good job c:

Just because you don't feel like a hero in your own story, doesn't mean you're not a hero in someone else's.
