In a small quiet village on the coast of Norway, unnoticeably tucked away amid enormous rock walls and jagged cliffs, lived a young artist named Sofie. She had a way of finding beauty in every aspect of nature and enjoyed taking long solitary hikes along the mountain trails that webbed away from the town. One mystical morning, as the fog from the sea descended on her village, she decided to venture out, despite her mother’s pleas that she stay home. She ventured deeper into the mountains than she had ever dared before, eager to capture a bird's eye view of the foggy world below for her canvas and paint.
As Sofie painted amidst the cool, swirling, mountainous breeze and shadowed sunlight, she heard a faint song being along with the breeze. Perplexed, she followed the entrancing tune until she stumbled upon a hole that led into the ground. It was large enough to fit five elks and she initially thought that it was the home of a lynx, or even worse, a polar bear. She started to turn away but her keen artist’s eye caught a mysterious, ethereal glow emanating from further into the hole, drawing her in like a moth to a flame.
With cautious steps, Sofie entered the hole and, to her surprise, found herself in a lush, unearthly realm bathed in lustrous light. Floating orbs swayed in the air, emitting soft, melodic hums that resounded through the tranquil space.
Terrified, but mesmerized more, Sofie explored the mystical realm. She encountered magical beings who physically looked like water but gave off a shimmering glow that sparkled like stars on a moonless night. She realized she was in a place where all the beauty that could be imagined came into existence but was multiplied by infinite factors. She had come to a realm with no reality, where the boundaries of possibility disappeared.
Amidst her awe, Sofie met a wise, ethereal entity named Freyja, who spoke of the interconnectedness of love, beauty, and the universe. Freyja guided Sofie through the realm, revealing that this mystical place was a haven for artists, dreamers, and those who sought inspiration beyond the tangible world.
As the day waned, Sofie's heart swelled with newfound inspiration and understanding. She bid farewell to Freyja and the enchanting realm, returning to the mountain trail from whence she came as twilight painted the sky in hues of violet and gold.
As she walked back to collect her belongings she tripped and all went black. When she awoke, she was in her room tucked in her warm bedsheets. Her mom walked in, placed a mug of hot chocolate by her bed, and kissed her good morning. Back in the comfort of her room, Sofie sat before her canvas, thinking about the dream she had just had. As picked up her brush she felt a sense of peace, and tranquility, a love for the brush and its use as a tool of beauty and expression. She swiped to the left, then again, to the right. Eventually, art started coming together better than she expected. This drove her to paint more, and more until her paintings were exhibiting the ethereal beauty that she had witnessed in her sleep. Each stroke was a memory of the realm that further ignited her passion to create, capturing the essence of the mystical realm and the wisdom shared by Freyja.
Within no time Sofie found herself a global sensation, her art like no other. Each painting was the embodiment of grace, peace, love, and beauty. She had reached new heights and she never doubted that there was beauty in every color and every stroke. Not only was her art an expression of that beauty, but it had now become the embodiment of her soul. She decided that she wanted an artist's name to sign her paintings. She was no longer Sofie, she was Freyja, the painter

Hello friend!
I saw your work in the Green Room and figured I’d check it out.
Per my interpretation, this was a really interesting short story! It was quite short, but it was very fun as well!
Sofie, a painter, ventures farther than she ever has before to paint, only to find a hole that has a different realm in it. She ventures inside and meets an entity named Freyja, and she quickly learns to love everything she's learned from her. Upon leaving the realm, Sofie stumbles, blacking out and waking up in her bedroom. It turns out it was all just a dream, but Sofie still has a whole new perspective and so much more inspiration.
This was a great story with a really fascinating plot!
If I could offer any sort of advice, it would be to build upon ideas a little more.
There were a few spots that I wish had some more details to really paint the picture of what I'm seeing. One example of this is in chapter four, when you said,
I just want a little more here. What in the realm is so beautiful, and what does it look like if it has all of the "beauty" that could be imagined?
Building on these ideas could definitely make this a more enticing read, but, obviously, this is just a suggestion, and it's always up to the writer, so please take this criticism lightly and know that I mean nothing negative by it—only trying to provide a somewhat useful critique.
If I had to pick my favorite part, it would have to be the way you showed Sofie's curiosity! It was just so beautiful and truly showed why she is an artist, especially when you said,
AND...
Her curiosity is fabulously shown! She defies her mother to go see what she's never seen before, and she goes against all of her instincts when she goes into the hole. These are wonderful characteristics of an artist, and I really love how you show them here, so kudos to you for that!
I would like to say that I also really like the ending! I love that Sofie embodies the magic she saw in her dream and makes it part of her artwork. It's poetic in a way, and I thought it was really cool!
Overall, this was a really great story! I enjoyed reading it, and there was nothing too terribly wrong here. You did an awesome job, and I would love to see what else you have in store!
Thank you for taking the time to write and post this, and I hope this review is of some use to you!
Goodbye for now! I hope you have a magnificent day (or night) wherever you are!
Thanks for you're in-depth review. I agree some areas could've been a little more touched up, but you live and you learn right. I will be sure to keep your tips in mind for my next work. Thanks.
Hey there! Timeless Mage here to leave a review.
This is a lovely short story. I always enjoy it when stories get to smudge the edges of reality like this one does. A part of this that really stood out to me is "It was large enough to fit five elks and she initially thought that it was the home of a lynx, or even worse, a polar bear. She started to turn away but her keen artist’s eye caught a mysterious, ethereal glow emanating from further into the hole, drawing her in like a moth to a flame." To me, this wonderfully illustrates the caution of going somewhere you know is dangerous, just because you can, then finding out that not all is how you would have expected it to be.
Some motives/character actions that I find intriguing:
Sofie leaves the mystical realm that she obviously holds dear simply because it is getting late. I find this interesting, because the way it was written brings up so many questions: Does Sofie know the danger of staying past the day that comes up in so many other realms (I'm thinking of some Celtic mythology/dnd feywild style stories)?
Furthermore, why does she take on the name of a distinct separate entity, Freyja? Sofie seems to hold Freyja dear as a friend, but not as a part of herself. The act of taking on her name symbolically suggests that she has somehow become her, despite simply taking inspiration from her.
Some concluding suggestions/thoughts: I noticed that you are using a lot of summary, looking at paragraph 4-6. Specific instances/descriptions and dialogue would help cement the reader in Sofie's dream.
This has the potential to go far. Keep it up!
