I am flipping through the channels of our television (ours as in a roommate of mine, also know as the greatest friend I could ever have! Lin.) While I am searching I find the news broadcast. There is a lot of noise coming from the background; it's loud and obnoxious. I wonder what it is? It is blocking out all other sounds. I hear nothing but mumbles from the news advisor. Moments later, the sound stops, and, before it ends, I can hear just one word-zombie. The TV flickers and turns off. That is the least of our worries (again as in Lin). I can not believe what I am hearing right now! Can this really be true? God certainly didn't mention anything about zombies in the Bible. Does that mean God doesn't exist?
Lin walks in brushing her hair and stares at the tv. She drops the brush to get my attention. "Well, gotta look good in case some really hot zombie dudes try to eat us, aye?"
"You know about that, but, how?" I ask.
Lin looks for a knife, shouting, "Well, it sorta is all over the news! You're also sorta watching a late broadcast there."
Wait. I get up and go stand beside Lin at the kitchen counter. "How long has this been happening?"
Lin snags a knife off the counter and starts stashing food into a grocery bag. "Uuuuh, maybe a few hours, at least here anyhow. Don't know about other places."
"How have I not known about this? You could have mentioned this to me earlier!"
Lin pulls Belle into the kitchen and hands her a grocery bag. "Well, I sorta did just finish taking a shower like a little bit ago. Start packing up the food! We have got to get to a safe place- and soon. It's not bad around here yet, but you never know."
I pause. "Lin, how long was I asleep?" I ask this considering the fact I woke up just a few minutes beforehand.
Lin thinks. "Well, I was in the shower for an hour, and you were asleep for a few hours before that. So... at least three hours?"
"Three hours?!" I never sleep that long! There must have been a reason I overslept. Before long a few minutes of thinking has passed and nothing comes to mind. I lean against the counter. "What happened last night?"
Lin hands her an empty bottle of scotch. "That's hardly astonishing that you don't remember. I mean, we did drink in celebration last night for your promotion. A bit of a waste now, isn't it?"
"Wow, I never thought I could drink so much; someone important must have been there."
"Yeah, there was. I'll let you figure out those details, though." Lin looks around and sighs. "Too bad we gotta leave; this place is so pretty."
The thought about us leaving our home sinks in. I begin to tear for no apparent reason and then I begin to bawl, hard.
Lin frowns and wraps me in a blanket. "Shhh, shhh, don't worry. What're the zombies gonna do to this place, trash it? If they do, we can just set 'em on fire. Calm down, 'right?"
Wiping the tears with the sleeve of a green turtleneck I bought not to long ago, I tell Lin "I love that country accent of yours; it's memorable."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
I laugh and punch her arm with my small fists. "Cheer up," I tease leaning further on the countertop.
"We stick together right, Belle?"
I smile. "Of course we do, our vow has been made, and it shall be kept!" I command as if I'm head of a war.
Lin smiles and throws some toilet paper into a spare bag. "Glad you remembered the vow, Belle. Right-o, anything else we need before we skip on out for our journey?"
"We should pack our toiletries, along with a spare bag in which can be carried in a suitcase with some warm clothes. I heard a cold front is coming."
Lin pulls out a luggage bag and runs around, grabbing random jackets from their hooks. "Right-o, Bells, keep ringin' that sweet, sweet tune of logic and we'll be sure to survive the zombies with no sweat, darlin'."
"You're so much smarter than I, don't lie because we both know it's true."
She laughs as I run into our room and begin to pack. I grab jeans, long sleeve t-shirts, and a pair of boots for each of us. I am about to run to our closet and grab winter accessories when I remember the incident. She used to have a strong relationship with her long distance boyfriend; Josh. When he broke up with her she was depressed for the longest time. She didn't do much, just sat around and watched dramatic movies on amazon prime. I sigh, walk into the kitchen, and look at her with an expression of exhaustion. I am tired of the excuses that she gives; still- even that doesn't stop me from not being mad at her; I couldn't be.
Lin raises her arms innocently when she sees me. "What did I do to deserve the look now? I swear I didn't pack the extra scotch!" She whistles and kicks the bag of scotch behind her. "Okay, maybe I have a problem, don't judge so harshly, Belle."
"I'm Christian- you see me reading the bible every day. You don't see me judging you, do you? I mean, I have asked you to come to church with me so many times..."
Lin grabs the bible and puts it in the bag with the clothes. "Right! We can't forget your bible, you may want it for the journey. You gotta remember that I'm not the religious type in any case. I was just joking with you, I knooow you don't judge. Did you snag some clothes?"
"Yeah I did, although we don't have gloves and hats, nor scarfs, thanks to the depression stage, in which I believe we can blame on Josh." She gives me an evil glare. "Hey, no hard feelings, remember?"
Her eyes widen and she muttered,"Just because someone claims that they're not judgmental does not mean they're being honest. It could be far from the truth. Don't judge me about my boy issues, especially since you have had way many more than..."
I cut her off. "Whoa, i'm not the one going around on my knees, asking every guy to be with me."
Her face turns red. "You little-" she says, chasing me. She tackles me to the floor and tickles me.
I give in. "Okay, you win, you win!
"That's what I thought," she says.
"I wish I could tell when you were kidding, I thought you were about to kill me, just like those zombies running the streets!" I gasp, out of breath.
"Now finish packing and be quick. we don't have much time. I will be waiting at the door. Don't forget those toiletries because I don't want to have to wake up to your bad breath first thing in the morning."
Before she says more, I cut in, "Don't pack too much, we don't want to have to carry around too many bags do we?"
She pouts and throws an old orange at me. "I gueesss, but least we'd get pretty muscular after a while, am I right? Besides, I guess we can pick up more clothes on our way to... well, wherever the hell we're going. It should be pretty fun, action packed, and DEATH DEFYING! Soon, we'll have the entire world at our hands, Belle. Granted, we need a ton of those berries that make ya grow. So, are you ready to skip right on outta here to a new day and away from them zombies?" She picks up the food bags and gestures towards the door.
"Yeah I am! Just hold on a sec while I finish packing. It should take just a moment." After finishing putting things in the bags and grabbing our toiletries from the bathroom, I follow her out the door.
She bows and waits until she's out to shut the door. "It's a shame we're leaving, but maybe we'll be back. Come on, Princess Belle, I reckon we should go hit up the nearest Walmart for clothes." She twirls and starts skipping to the car. "You wanna drive or should I?"
"Funny," I say hopping into the car.
"What?"
"It's a shame," I mention, "if those zombies wouldn't have ruined this place we call earth, I could still take Drivers Ed!."
"I tried to tell you not to wait until your junior year, and now look at you, all beaten and penniless."
"Wow, thanks," I say, laughing. "Soon enough I won't be the only one."
I am about to hop in when Len stops me. "It's now or never, drive or never drive at all." She reaches into her pocket for keys and all she pulls all is cloth.
Lin pats her pockets and groans. "Ah, damn, Belle, I think we left the keys inside. Well, we're sure as hell not walking, I'll run and get them." Lin hands me the knife and nods, "Stay here, chica, and use this to protect yourself just in case!" Lin jumps out of the car and runs inside. Ignoring her instructions, I chase after her. When Lin goes inside, she's frantically searching the counters for the keys. After a minute of pure panic, she discovers them hiding under the same orange she threw earlier. Sighing in relief, she grabs them and turns to run back to the car, but I'm is standing in her way.
"Hey, I got them, don't fret!" she yelled. Scolding me for trying to go alone, I gave her back the knife and we both headed back to the car. She opened the door to the car inside, handing her the keys.
"Yes! It's finally happening!" she yelps in happiness.
"What are you so excited about?" I ask, glaring at her. "You're not the one driving, you know! What happens if I run into a zombie and it splatters our windshield with guts and gore, and we run off the side of the road, and there happens to be another car there, and we-"
"Whoa, Belle, calm down! There shouldn't even be any zombies here anyways. . . yet."
"Stop it, Lin! You're scaring me!"
"The only thing scarier than zombies is zombies in the dark, with no flashlight and no car."
"I still don't see what you're so happy about."
"I don't know either; I just really want to see you drive." I start the car and slowly back out of the driveway, and prepare myself once I reach the street. Okay, Belle, so far so good. You can do this. Here goes nothing.
Lin plugs in her seat belt. "Do try not to kill us, darlin'. Just pretend this is like one of those video games your cousins play. What is it, GTA? Just don't ram into the police and we'll be peachy. Drivin' is pretty easy, just don't panic, and it'll be smooth sailing. If you need help, just say, 'kay?" She pats her back and start messing with the car radio.
"Really? My first time driving and you're going to blast the radio?"
"Might as well, 'eres nothing in this stink hole left for us, what harm can a little music do?"
"You correct me once again, Lin." She laughs and I start driving forward. "This is easier that I thought it would be."
"Mhm, Belle, I told ya it's easy!" Lin stretches and looks out the window. "It's astonishingly barren outside. You'd think there'd be more of a ruckus going about." She shrugs and mutters, "Oh well, more supplies for us then, and less of a road trap."
As I'm driving, I see something appear in the distance. It looks weird, almost like...BAM! What was that? I notice a man stumbling in front of us.
Lin taps my shoulder and whispers, "Yo, Belle, avoid that guy. He looks mega drugged out. Just keep heading towards Walmart before the zombies all come out to play."
"Yeah, right, sorry." I stare at the guy as we pass, catching his eye. I look forward and continue to drive, accepting the fact that I just can't help him right now.
She senses my guilt and whispers, "It's alright, Belle he's a goner." I start to cry because I know I could help them, but I won't. I stop the car and pull over.
"I can't drive anymore. I can't do this. Whatever this is that is killing all of us I wish it would just stop!" I get angry and then get even more upset for yelling at her. She holds me close enough that I can cry on her shoulder and wet her sleeve with my tears.
Lin smooths Bell's hair. "Shhh, shhh, it'll be 'right. Do I need to take over driving? You can rest in the back seat or something. I severely doubt the police are gonna be like 'Why, who is that random dead chick in the back of that car?' Not everyone's gonna die, 'cause ze human race are survivors!" She flips on dramatic survivor music off of her phone for effect.
"Yeah...yeah, I think that would be a good idea." I unbuckle my seat belt and I am about to open the door to the back seat, when in the distance we hear another BOOM!, only this time it's much louder. Oh my gosh...It's-s like a bomb. You can see the explosion in the air.
Lin quickly jumps into the driver's seat. I climb back in the passenger side and she flashes me a look of confidence before saying, "How much you wanna bet that was Walmart?"

Hey there! I'm here for a quick review.
So, what you have here is pretty funny. I like the dynamic between the two main characters.
The main problem is...a lot of it doesn't feel at all believable, and that's really throwing me out of the story here. Short list of places that happened:
1. Overall, I thought your main character was way too calm about the zombie apocalypse happening. I mean, this is the freaking apocalypse! And she's just like "oh yeah, I'm seeing it on the news. Oh, and the news is being weird." She does start getting worried later, which is good, but it still feels strange how nonchalantly they take everything. I did like the little touch with how she immediately wonders about God - that's the sort of thing I don't see a lot of stories do, but is definitely something that would happen in real life.
2. If this is her first time driving, why on earth is she doing this during a life or death situation? I mean, she doesn't even really know how to drive, and they're trying to navigate zombies and who knows what else on the road.
3. This could just be because the zombies haven't reached their area yet, but there really should be normal radio broadcasts during a zombie apocalypse. They tend to interrupt things like that.
4. Why would they think it's Walmart? Walmart doesn't have anything in it that's particularly likely to explode, and I wouldn't think it would be a target for a bomber - I mean, it's a store, it's got vital supplies in it that will be needed during the apocalypse. Maybe provide a bit more context for that assumption.
Those are really the main places where it fell down for me, but other than that you have a pretty solid plot. Also, I like Lin. She's pretty cool.
But yeah, that's all I've got for you. Good luck with this!
I like where this story is going and I'm looking forward to reading more of it! The only things I'm going to critique on are that you had a few minor grammar areas (Which we all have) and that in the first 7 chapters it is in Belles point of view, then suddenly you say "Lin pulls Belle into the kitchen and hands her a grocery bag." Changing the point of view in the story. You only did this a few times that I noticed but it made me question whether or not I was reading anything right. I've made this mistake in every story I have written so don't stress it much. other than that you have a very good story here, please keep writing.
