The Beach at Night

(A/N: This is a dramatic monologue, not a short story. Please keep that in mind while reviewing.)

You know we really shouldn’t be down here. Dad’s going to be really mad if he finds out we snuck out below the docks. Yeah, you always say he won’t, but somehow… No, I don’t think we will get in trouble he’ll be mad at mom though and that’s almost just as bad don’t you think. Well, mom did drive us here. The beach dock or at least under it, one of your favorite hiding spots. You’ve always loved it down here even though I hate it down here, you know that. Yeah yeah, you love it and miss it and it’s so fun and you feel like an explorer and all that jazz. You hid a time box or whatever down here two or three years ago, right? Or your class did when you were in tenth grade? Do you remember what you put in it? You put in some of your favorite’s? Comics. What a huge sacrifice.

Please, we all know what Greg put in that capsule, his freaking hair stuff. I don’t think it was important to him; I think he was really just trying to get rid of the stuff. You don’t know? His mom bought that stuff for him in like seventh grade and he’s been trying to get rid of it for years. No, you actually put something you loved down there. You’ll dig it up in a couple of years with the rest of your class I know you will.

Nah our class didn’t do stuff like that. I mean I don’t even know what I would have put in it if we had. Like, one of my necklaces maybe. I’d end up sticking a stuffed dog in there without you telling me that’s a stupid idea. Well, I mean it is kind of dumb, a lot of my ideas are dumb but like your there to stop me most of the time so who cares. Hey, don’t give me that look. I’m just kinda dumb we all know this. Yeah, yeah, whatever. I miss having you around you know…

The hospital isn’t that bad, is it? I mean I know you miss the beach and the arcade and other stuff but like. I mean at least it’s clean, right? You’re getting better. The doctors told me not to worry. Gave me like a pat on the back and everything.

That’s so nasty, please put it down. Yeah shells are gross. You never know what in them, I don’t like the mystery, so not my jam. Do you want me to bring you more shells more often? The shells, I’d brave them for you, you know, even if I can’t understand why you like them. They make your room less drab? Well I mean I think I could make you a sea glass wind chime. Sea glass is safer. And prettier, when the light shines through it you can see all these nice colors. You’re not sure if they would let you keep it huh? Well then, I’ll make it and keep it in your room at home so when you can come home you will already have it up.

I’m not lying. You are going to come home… It’s not false hope. You are going to come home and you’re going to get better. And when you come home we can have a nice party with everyone, they’ll be so happy to see you. You have to get better, you have to. Then you over heard wrong. You shouldn’t eavesdrop anyway, its rude. Mom would have told us if you weren’t going to get better. No, you’re going to be fine. I don’t… I don’t want to talk about this anymore. You’re going to be fine. You have to be fine.

I’m not talking to myself. It’s true, I promise. No, I’m just going to hug you for a little bit. Don’t worry. You always worry so much. I’m not deflecting. Mine own issues are my own, you have everything else to worry about it. No moms not going to be here for two more hours. She said she wanted us to spend more time alone together. It’s always hard to talk in the hospital. It’s so stuffy with nurses crowding around you twenty four seven

She… You think you’re going to die don’t you. I… that won’t happen. It can’t happen. You don’t want to die, do you? God… please say something. I don’t understand. No, I got that you don’t like being hooked up to all those things. I understand you miss days where we could just walk on the beach and through the woods. But your alive. Isn’t that enough? God… I hate this. I’m texting mom. We can’t be here anymore. I can’t… I know that it’s not about me but my sister. I don’t want you to die. You can’t die, how would I live if you died. Oh, don’t pull that you’ll have to go on. You don’t even want to do on. How would I manage this without you?

I’m calling mom, we need to leave. You’re going back before you do something stupid. Of course, I’m telling mom. You can’t keep that a secret, I won’t let you. No, we are going back and you’re getting help. I’m leaving and your coming with me. Stop pulling on me I want to go home. Yes, I know you want to go home too. And you will, you just need to give it a little longer. You’ll get better, you have to get better!

I don’t care if we get caught anymore. I want to go… We need to get you back as well, I’m sure it’s been too long. I will carry you up the sand dunes if I have to, come on. I want you to get better, and you can’t get better on a beach, or in an arcade, or in a forest, or in any of the places we used to like. Places where we meet with our friends. You get better in a hospital. And you will get better. Now come on. We should go.

Hey AwkwardMeerKat, here for a quick review. I first noticed the title of your work, and although it is simple and gets right to the setting, maybe changing it up a bit would attract more readers. Even just switching a few words around would work, such as "The Beach Night." You could even variate it more and only give a detail about the beach, like "Salt in the Air.: However, this is only a suggestion and your title is perfectly fine the way it is.

When people talk, there should be quotation marks. Such as, "You know we really shouldn't be here," Samantha said nervously. I also thought adding more imagery to their conversation would be nice, like the tones of their voices when they talked so we could see how they were feeling. An introduction to the story itself would be even better, like talking about what the beach looked like and its setting so the reader could picture the scene.

It would also be nice to know what their names are and what they look like because in this sense we are left clueless.

You put in some of your favorite’s? Comics. What a huge sacrifice. should be...

"You put in some of your favorites? Yeah, the comics. What a huge sacrifice." she said with a scoff. (the last part is not needed, although gives more detail)

I skimmed over most of this, although I highly suggest adding more details about the settings and the characters as well as adding quotation marks.

Cheers!

Hey so while your stuff would be helpful I'm sure in another situation this piece is a dramatic monologue, not like a short story. But I mean thanks for the review anyway.

Hello, E.E here for a possibly quick review and maybe some utter nonsense! Grim is here as well, drinking hot cocoa and being a slacker. *Grim looks over, glaring* So, lets get started. :smt020

So, first thing I notice is that if a person is talk, quotation marks and indentation are need. The places that need this would be "You know we really shouldn’t be down here. Dad’s going to be really mad if he finds out we snuck out bellow the docks.", "Yeah you always say he won’t, but somehow…". (A comma is also needed after yeah), "Well, mom did drive us here.", "Yeah yeah, you love it and miss it and it’s so fun and you feel like an explorer and all that jazz." (a comma is needed after the first yeah). Basically, since most of your story is dialogue, anytime a new character is talking, indent with quotation marks and make the dialogue more interesting. Trying saying, he told her/him feverishly, slowly inching close to her while his eyes focus on something ahead of him. It will make the story more interesting over all. And put in description. The story seems rather bland with out it. Describe the beach, if the characters are scared of it they have blond or black hair. Add some spice to it!

Overall I liked the story and keep up the good work! Happy Halloween! I really need to go now Grim has souls to reap and he needs more cocoa. He has a problem, seriously. Cheerio and fruit loops to you!

This is a dramatic monologue, not a short story. But thanks for the review anyway.

I will not condemn you for what you did yesterday, if you do it right today.
