A tunnel,
Pitch black,
And I'm walking, running,
Pushing and panting,
Stumbling along
Through blinding darkness.
The air is cold.
The warmth of kind words does not reach down here.
The only words that make it are
harsh.
The echo of footsteps,
The weak, ragged breathing,
The ghost of life that leaves my mouth only to die seconds later.
I am alone in here.
But then, suddenly, Light!
Shocking but welcome
And comforting nonetheless.
Golden sunlight streams in
Through an opening above,
It is warm on my skin,
It is happiness, love!
And in flows my confidence,
My energy, my motivation!
And hope - precious hope -
That I will make it through.
But as time goes on
the light grows
dim.
I danced past the opening,
Laughing and singing!
But every sun sets
and so my laughter, once so rich and genuine,
turns hollow.
And now as an empty shell I creep deeper.
Deeper into Darkness.
The happiness now so far behind me.
The light of hope disappearing.
I shiver.
For when tomorrow abandoned me,
It took the warmth too
And left me to the mercy of the Night.
But still I keep going,
Though where I don't know.
I don't see the point
For there is no one near enough to care.
But to stop
would be permanent.
To stop,
Oh to stop!
To rest aching legs,
To capture my breath,
To not have to face another day of pointless suffering in this everlasting tunnel.
To stop would be so easy,
To stop would be free!
But to stop would be permanent.
So I'll keep on running
Or trudging along.
I don't know how much tunnel is left.
I don' know how much further I'll manage.
I'm starting to doubt I'll ever see that light again.
But to stop...
To stop would be permanent

Hey Althea,here for a review.
Nice poem ,I got to say,the theme you choose to publicise how life is,it is absolutely perfect,"To stop would be permanent " amazing.
One thing I noticed in these particular lines
" But then suddenly light !
Shocking but welcome".
I think welcoming would suit better, sound better too.
Otherwise it is a great poem, the meaning ,sound everything.
The poem has a great imagery and it actually spoke to me ,the meaning is very real and suits everyone's situation.
I hope you keep writing such amazing pieces.
Hi!
This poem was like a punch in the gut for me. A brilliant punch in the gut.
As someone who struggles with depression and anxiety, I relate to this on many levels, and deeply. Words are evading me, with how accurate this is. It's amazingly written. Grammar and imagery are perfect. Absolutely perfect!
So few people really understand this side of dark thinking, and you put it into words so elegantly. It's really quite impressive.
That last line really gets me. It's incredible. This entire metaphor is my heart and feelings in a nutshell. Thank you so much for writing this.
I can't wait to read more of your art.
