On a thin line

PreviousNext

I am constantly swaying on a thin line between normality and absolute insanity, just awaiting the moment for someone or something to sway me one way or the other.

Such reality and honesty in just one sentence! I love it! I automatically reflected on myself and related instantly. If this is coming from a personal experience, you're not alone. Many great artists struggle to find themselves and fit in with the world, while also expressing themselves. I'll definitely read more of your stuff and this poem will be on my mind often.

As once told to me by a fellow member, I usually find the best poetry on this site are the ones that are short and pack a punch. However in my case it's because they're the only ones I have the patience to read.

Now this in particular caught my eye because of its untraditional format, which I'm normally a fan of. You didn't disappoint. If this had been broken up in to stanzas or separate lines, there's no way it would've produced the same effect. Because of the fact that you deliver a message in a simple statement makes it so much more impactful.

There is one thing I would criticize about the piece, and that would be your title. I rarely find an occasion where a writer can incorporate the title into the work and not make it cliche. It just seems so unoriginal and expected. It's almost as if you struggle to find things to say when you write, which I'm almost sure you don't. Try making the title something more relatable, or even poetic, if that itself doesn't sound cliche ;p.

Now I lied before when I said there was one thing I would criticize, because there's two. Word choice when you write poetry is as important as bread when you make toast. On either side of the metaphorical line you say there is "normality" and "absolute insanity", which would imply that the two are opposites. However the opposite of insanity would actually be rationality, the ability to use the power of your mind to perform every task you need to. I wouldn't say there's anything "normal" about that. So again, word choice is quite important when it comes to your writing, especially in a poem like this where there aren't much words to begin with.

All in all, the poem is well written, an quite thought provoking. I applaud the effort but feel as if it could've been done slightly better. You're doing well so far and I encourage you to write more, as you can only get better from here. Keep up the good work :D

Hello! I'm going to attempt to review this. Let me just say that it's going to be difficult because this is so short, simple and blunt.

I actually really like it. It's not that you've written something which would be compared to Shakespeare, or because you've used enormous and complicated words. I like this... no, I love this because I can completely relate to it. Just as I'm sure so many others can.

Sometimes I'll feel completely stable, I'll be living life as a normal person would. Then other times I just want to poison some cupcakes and dance with some goblins. I think this short little poem gets that point across.

Well done. Seriously. This is perfect.
