birds

PreviousNext

a raven flits across the grass,
a flock of crows encircling.
the leader looks up, and
those avian eyes stare
into my soul.
the pack of corvids
peck closer
and closer
and then,
an owl calls from the trees,
and they rustle and rush to leave.

i am left alone,
a reminder that it is night
and loneliness
is inevitable
with me.

i start to scratch
my quill against
my parchment, then-
look! a rook;
feathers plumed
and head atilt,
the creature admires my
haunting guilt.
it wants to stay,
but not today
so it blinks and doesn't bray.
it stretches out a limb
like a cat in the sims
before flapping away
and away.

This poem creates a beautiful and haunting mood using birds as symbols of loneliness and fleeting connection. The crows and raven feel ominous, but they leave at the call of an owl, leaving the speaker alone with their thoughts. The rook’s brief visit reflects how comfort can come and go, leaving a lasting impact despite its short stay. The writing flows naturally, and the repetition at the end emphasizes the rook’s quiet departure. There’s a balance of sadness and wonder here, making the poem touching and memorable. It captures the feeling of being alone, yet surrounded by life, in a powerful and relatable way. Overall, a great poem! :D

Thank you so much!!!

The mention of varying birds here and the word play on aviation made this quite a fun read. It's very interesting tune with nature, and the interaction of the creature mentioned who flew away brings a bit of suspense here. Id say this is open to interpretation, but just reading it through I see a notice of passion for birds and a fine enchantment with nature. The rhyme in this one made it all the more beautiful.

I absolutely love this poem. First, I want to say as a bird lover, I love the variety of birds you used in this poem, and secondly, you are very talented with your wordplay.
'i start to scratch
'my quill against
my parchment, then-
look! a rook;
feathers plumed
and head atilt,
the creature admires my
haunting guilt.'
I have to say this part might be my favorite. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I feel as though the guilt comes from the person watching a bird whilst having a quill in their hand, almost feeling as though they should hide so as not to offend the bird. Overall, I adored this poem. Happy writing :)

Thank you so much for the kind words!!! As an author, I want to say that I totally meant for that to happen. Also as an author, I don't want to go all "boy cries wolf" and have no one knows when I actually did or didn't mean to do something, so I actually didn't know about the guilt-bird-feather connection, though I am quite impressed that you recognized that and made that connection and appreciate it very much. Thanks for this lovely review, Tess, it really brightened my day! Happy writing to you too :D

A beautiful poem.
The very start of the poem builds intensity on the subject, with -
"the pack of corvids
peck closer
and closer
and then...
grabbing the audience attention from everywhere and making them realize situation.
Further as it continues it adds the to the eerie environment described with -
"i am left alone,
a reminder that it is night
and loneliness
is inevitable
with me"

Finally i really like the perfect 'timing' of this phrase being placed inside the poem-
"then-
look! a rook;
feathers plumed
and head atilt,
the creature admires my
haunting guilt.
It explains that the creature 'a rook' has admired the protagonist of the poem even of its guilt.

Fantastic ending which comes with a promise that it will see the next day sunlight alive.

Kepp it up !

i love the way u have written this poetry. I feel u can pay a bit more attention to the punctuation to make it better. U can use Capitals like:"A raven flits across.....
". Other than that I feel it is perfect! the last lines were amazing.
