“Teenagers’ Attitude”

PreviousNext

A person develops his/her character depending on the environment he/she grew up from. This consists of the place and the people surrounding him as he grows as a teenager. From this point, builds up the so called “attitude”. A teenagers’ attitude about school, family, teachers and money is very powerful and is connected strongly to the visual teachings communicated by parents/guardians. Teenagers learn more through visual communication and respond to their environment according to the dominated behaviors visually communicated in the home. (Brooks 2011) Teenagers differ from each other because of their distinct attitudes and behaviors which are usually the cause or the effects of having different habits. Such habits may come from good or bad attitudes of a person. Modern teenagers nowadays exhibit peculiar attitudes such as rebellious, aggressive, and passive.

Often, teenagers go to a certain point where they rebel. Teenage rebellion is a form of rejecting or violating the rules and curfews. Rebellious behaviors stem from the desire to conform to peer groups. And for teenagers with low self-esteem, this urge is often intense (Rebellious Teenagers, 1). Peer pressure is often mistaken as a means to be accepted by a certain group of people that we perceive to be higher in status compared to us. When a person wants to be at an equal level with a group, he/she tends to welcome all the possible ways to attain their status. Example is when a person tries to smoke or drink, or to take drugs to feel accepted in a group. Rebellious teenagers are seldom concerned about being right or wrong. Their concern is mostly about being accepted and acknowledged.

Aggressive behaviors can vary from problems with emotional regulation to severe and manipulative behaviors. (Barry 2003) One characteristics of aggression is being verbally aggressive. This is defined as verbal insults or the act of bullying which results to hurting others. While physically aggressive is when teenagers think of hitting and striking back in anger and engaging in physical fights.

Lastly is the Passive Teenagers which is described as a non-verbal way Instead of saying or showing that you feel upset or annoyed, this type of person just tends to remain silent. For instance is the non-communication when there is clearly something problematic to discuss. Passive aggression might be seen as a defense mechanism that people use to protect themselves. It might be automatic and might stem from early experiences. What they are protecting themselves from will be unique and individual to each person; although might include underlying feelings of rejection, fear, mistrust, insecurity and/or low self-esteem. (Harrn 2011)

After learning all the attitudes and behaviors of teenagers, I found out that a person's attitude is a result of his/her mind-set or outlook in life that is translated into actions or feelings. A teenagers' attitude about life will determine their future.

Hey there Tiana,

Congratulations on writing a very intriguing essay! I wasn't sure what to expect when I read this because it's always difficult to pin down what makes a person how they are. But you've done this in a very good manner. I like how you showed it relates to their background, what they see and their outlook on life.

You go into detail and explain three distinct mannerisms which a teenager can be fit into, or three phases a teenager might experience. But they way you write this essay makes it seem like it's those three, and only those three. My advice is to add in somewhere that there are many more or different ones as well, and then in the introduction state that you'll be going into detail with the chosen three you discussed.

As for layout, it was very good. You had a topic sentence for each paragraph which basically means the first sentence explained what the following paragraph was about. You had a satisfying conclusion when you summarized the affects of a teenagers attitude.

"Lastly is the Passive Teenagers which is described as a non-verbal way " Lastly are (plural here) the passive teenagers (no capitals because it's more a category not really a name) which are described as non-verbal. (don't forget the full stop, and the word 'way' here isn't really necessary.)

In future if you need any help with creating stronger or improving your essays, here is a club about them. It give you handy tips in the forums section: clubs/1759/forum

Hope this review helped!

Admittedly, I came in here expecting a boring essay, but this one shone through. It's interesting in its own right. I didn't have a problem really reading the essay. Anyway, I'm The Raven and I will be reviewing your work as I wait for my next event in my schedule. My review will be divided into The Good and What Needs Improvement/Suggestions. Now, let's get down to business.

The Good:
1) I like how you're looking at more than a side of teenagehood. It is so often, so very often, in fact too often that people would just associate active, aggressive rebellion with the teenager when there are so many ways in fact for a teenager to react to their surroundings. First-hand account - it's a fact, I'm sure most, if not everyone would agree. Therefore, it is a fresh experience when I read your essay.

2) The level of diction you use is just right. It's not too complicated and there's little jargon. Anyone could understand it. This is important for communicating your essay, especially to the masses. However, is that your intention?

What Needs Improvement/Suggestions:
1) While I claim no expertise in being a paediatrician or a psychiatrist, or a teacher, I can't help but to feel that something is missing. So basically, based on your essay, teenagers can be divided into the aggressive and the passive. But what about the defensive? It could get that way too - the kind of teenagers who could really explode, but only when provoked enough? Also, it would have been interesting if you touched on special minorities of teenagers who aren't that way, unless you're telling me that it is impossible for teenagers to escape these categories of behaviour. Is it?

2) The conclusion isn't strong. I feel that there is nothing supporting the conclusion. For most of the essay, you've been trying to convince me that teenager behaviour is largely deterministic, and all of a sudden, you're telling me that they have agency? While I have no doubt that they do, there isn't a lot in your essay pointing towards that conclusion.

I'm afraid this is all I have. I have very limited knowledge in this field, and I could only give you this much. Still, it's a thought-provoking essay. Well done!

It is true that attitude really affects the future and personality of an individual; but are you sure that majority of the teenagers nowadays are rebellious, aggressive, and passive? For me, a lot of differences and distinctions could be seen in each teenager, so generalizing that "modern teenagers" nowadays exhibit those kind of attitude could be justified but still it doesn't apply to all. :)

I agree that many teenagers develop their attitudes depending on their environment. You're right about that. I like our essay, keep up the good work and good luck! :D
