"Innovations Made by Technology"
"I can't live without it." People from the 21st century usually utter these words because of too much dependence on technology. Technology has made many changes in our daily lives that it has become one of mankind's necessity. From letters as a means of communication to Emails. Game consoles and mobile applications as a means of entertainment instead of group games that we used to play like "ice-ice water". There are also online bank transactions for easier access on bank accounts. And from books like dictionaries and encyclopedias, search engines were invented. Thus technology has innovated fields of our lives like communication, business, entertainment and education.
We live in an age where communication is necessary. However, what is communication? When you look up the meaning of it in a dictionary, it is defined as a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs or behavior (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).Other references would define it as a means of connecting people or places (retrieved from http://businessdictionary.com). In general, communication is important for humans to understand and reach each other. As years pass, many communication tools were invented, among these, Emails also known as electronic mails are the most popular one. Do you ever wonder when online messaging started? It started way back in the year 1971 when a computer engineer named Ray Tomlinson invented the internet based mail. The first email "QWERTYUIOP" was sent between two computers that were actually sitting besides each other (History of Email & Ray Tomlinson, par 1). Since emails were invented, communication became easier and faster. People do not need to wait for days or weeks before they could deliver a message. Aside from that distance is no longer a problem to communicate with someone because emails can be sent in every part of the globe. All you have to do is type the person's email address and you message then click send and your message will be instantly delivered.
Aside from communication, technology also enhanced businesses. Before, people would carry out a lot of money to pay their bills; they need to go to banks personally to do transactions. But due to the innovations made by technology, online banking was born. But did you know that online banking started way back 1983? Believe it or not it did start way back 1983. The Bak of Scotland offered Nottingham Building Society (NBS) customers the first internet banking service in U.K and called it "Homelink". Connecting via a television set and a telephone to send transfers and pay bills, this service formed the basis for online banking as we know today. On January 1994, online banking was built into Microsoft Monet personal finance software. 100,000 households began accessing bank accounts online. In the year 2001, 19 million US households began accessing online bank accounts. And from the year 2011 up to present, online banking goes mainstream. Even late adopters choose to bank online and according to American Bankers Association (ABA), the majority of Americans aged 55+ prefer online banking over visiting a branch or ATM (Yodlee,2012). Because of online banking it is easier for people to manage their money. Gone are the days when you need to queue on a long line to do bank transactions. But banking is not the only thing that was innovated by technology when it comes to businesses. Even shopping is online now. You can purchase almost anything online may it be bags, clothes, shoes or even food. Online shopping became popular during the internet boom in 1990-2000. Amazon.com, the online bookstore founded by Jeff Bezos, created a history by becoming the first bookstore with a presence on the internet. Later, portals such as Yahoo.com and MSN.com also started online shopping channels where people could buy more than just books (TNN,2006). Most people prefer online shopping because it is convinient, faster, and sometimes products sold online are cheaper.
"Tagu-taguan maliwanag ang buwan, pagkabilang kong tatlo naka tago na kayo; Langit lupa impyerno, im im impyerno saksak puso tulo ang dugo..." Remember these chants? These chants are great part of my childhood; they were from Filipino games that I used to play with my friends when I want to entertaion myself. Yes, back then street games were popular means of entertainment, life was simple. But technology changed it all. Nowadays playing with game consoles and different mobile apps are the new means of entertainment. I myself fancy playing these modern "techy" games because you don't have to go outside to play games, you can play whenever and wherever you want. Aside from that, these games are not only for children to enjoy but also for adults. Different mobile apps were designed to suit each player's personality and interest. Thus technology made great changes in our way of entertaining ourselves.
There are also many innovations made by technology when it comes to the field of education. Before books were the only source of information when it comes to research, but now with the internet, different search engines rose. One of the famous search engines is BackRub. which is known today as Google. It was created by Stanford Computer Science graduates Larry Page and Sergey Brin (Our History In Depth; Google Company). Through search engines researching was made easy. You don't have to spend a lot of time on reading a book's table of contents or even card catalogues on libraries to search for a certain book to look for information that you need. All you have to do is totype a word or key words and voila! Many information will come out. Aside from search engines, online tutorials made learning easier. Through these tutorials, you can learn how to play an instrument, to draw, or even to cook.
Communication, business, entertainment and education; these are some of the fields of our lives that technology enhanced to make our lives easier. With emails, communication is faster, distance is no longer a problem to communicate with others.Online banking made handling money easier. Bills can be paid anytime and anywhere. Online stores made shopping easier and convenient. Game consoles and mobile apps provided new means of entertainment for both children and adults. And lastly search engines and online tutorials made studying simple. With all these advancements it is fun to depend on technology. But we should remember that too much dependence is also not good. We must remember that technology is here to help make our lives easier but not to replace us.
