As he got partway down the street, he cranked his head for a quick look back, and saw the monster emerge from the doorway. And by emerge, I mean slam the shabby motel door open so hard it literally flew off it’s hinges. The man ran on with a new sense of terror.
“It was an old door.” he told himself.
He rounded a corner, and emerged on a street that had a handful of shady-looking shops and pedestrianss. The people turned heir heads to look at him, and their faces contorted to horror as they saw the blood running off him in the rain. The man knew that this was the end of him; that there was no way he was going to escape the beast. It was so much stronger and faster than him. Plus, he was leaving a trail of blood everywhere he went.
In a sense of panic, he ran out into the middle of the street. Cars swerved violently out of his way, barely missing him and miraculously avoiding collision with each other. Car horns blared, voicing the terrified screams of the drivers inside each vehicle. Brakes were pushed to their limit, screeching as they burned.
Suddenly an idea came to him. He ran up to one of the cars, a shabby old truck, and yanked the driver’s door open.
“What the fuck are you doing? You fucking idiot!!” The man yelled, screaming at him as his white knuckles, still terrified, gripped the steering wheel.
Without wasting any time, he tore the flimsy old seat belt off the man, and threw him head-first out of the car.
The truck was still running, so he only had to put the pedal to the metal to get it moving. But before the car even had enough time to pick up any real speed, there was a loud thump, like something had hit the driver‘s side of the car. The beast had latched himself onto the side of his vehicle, and was gnashing its teeth and snarling at him through the glass window. The man let loose a terrified yelp,
“What the fu-!”
But he only had enough time to get that much out before the beast sent one of its fists sailing through the window. Instinctively, he brought a hand up to his face to shield himself from the flying glass, which in turn caused him to swerve off the road. He couldn’t see where he was going! Rain pelted the windshield, making it impossible to see. Where were his god damn windshield wipers?
The truck crashed into something solid, and the collision caused his head to smash into the inflated airbag. The impact made him only slightly dizzy, and because he couldn’t see out of the blurry, water covered windshield, he stuck his head out the broken window to see where he was.
They were on the left side of the road, and the object that had stopped them was a green road sign. Although it wasn’t exactly green anymore; the beast had been crushed into it, and its crimson blood was spattered all over it. The thing was howling with pain. It’s arm had taken most of the damage; or whatever you would call the mutilated, hanging piece of flesh now.
The man‘s mouth was open in shock, not knowing whether he was going to throw up or pass out. Blood from his own wounds dripped down his face and over his mouth and eyes. He gave the key in the ignition a sharp turn, and miraculously, it roared to a start. The side part of this car was completely totaled, but the engine still worked. He let out a shaking breath of relief.
He pulled back onto the road and started driving straight, pressing every button he could find hoping it triggered the windshield wipers. The car radio blared on and then off again, the air conditioning system blew through the vents, and then finally the plastic black sticks swiped back and forth on the glass. At least now he could see where he was going, even if he didn’t know where he was headed.
Driving was more difficult than he remembered. He hadn’t stepped behind the wheel since driver’s ed. back when he was 16. There was never money for a license when the time came, and he knew he could never afford a car either, so he just didn’t bother. Now he wished he had the experience, because merely driving in a straight line proved taxing, and as he pulled onto a highway the ruthless weather conditions and the push for speed made his task that much more arduous.
As he changed direction, rain started coming in through the window. With every gust, he was being splashed and sprayed by cold, wet droplets as if he were in the front row at SeaWorld.
He drove like this for a few miles, concentrating on keeping his wheels in-between the yellow lines, and ignoring the constant hammering of rain at his side. The thunderous storm was nearly deafening, but amidst all of the noise his ears picked up on another sound. VrrrrOOOOM!
In the rain-spattered visual he got from the truck’s grimy rear-view mirror, he could distinguish a rather large semi coming up on his car with unreasonable speed…
Was it good? It felt a little crazy as I was writing it. Tell me what you think
