[Just thought I'd share this gem; I'd forgotten all about it until I dug it up in one of my children's poetry books. Just thought I'd share the love. :D ]

How to Eat a Poem
Eve Merriam

Don't be polite.
Bite in.
Pick it up with your fingers and lick the juice that may run down your chin.
It's ready and ripe now, whenever you are.

You do not need a knife or fork or spoon
or plate or napkin or tablecloth.

For there is no core
or stem
or rind
or pit
or seed
or skin
to throw away.

I really, really used to like Eve Merriam's poetry whenever I was a little kid. I would always read her works and Shel Silverstein's book--The End of the World and Light in the Attic and all those compilations of silly ditties. In my own experience, there have been more poems than I can count worthy of a bite or two. =]

Ah, yes, this is a cool poem. What was the children's book called? I have a kid's poetry book with this poem in it... Perhaps it was the same book?

*smiles fondly at memories of reading Shel Silverstein* I used to love reading those. In my second grade classroom we had a little reading corner where we could go if we finished our work early. I used to love reading them there.
