Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Rio De Janeiro is going to be part of my NaNoWriMo story. The only problem is, I'm having a hard time finding 'inside' facts. Like the crime, drug rings, slums/shanty towns. What you would normally see in Rio, etc. etc.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this info? Better yet, has someone here visited Rio?
