The Serrated Sidewalk

As I pass out of that old trailer I see the sun stained sky, orange and red, with night fast approaching. Passing the few potted plants, faces drooping towards their homes, lawn ornaments greet me with that same plastic smile. I walk onto the white, chalky sidewalk and, like a child, begin to twirl my arms. Around and around I turn, until a loss of balance overcomes me and I fall to the ground with infantine giggles.

My eye is caught by a looming shadow, a strange man, hidden down the road. Walking, endlessly walking, his face masked by a massive paper bag held in his burly hands.

The idea that someone I didn’t know was a stranger, and strangers are to be feared, was the mantra of every child’s upbringing. So I pick myself up off of that bright dusty sidewalk and begin to skip back into the trailer. Somehow, as I foolishly prance towards home, a feeling of limitation overshadows my gaiety. I am completely unable to move forwards! I command my legs to move me towards the safety of that building, but they rebel. They send me backwards, gradually walking, unable to stop or change direction.

The man gets closer, and I can’t see his face, but his hair is visible: short, dark, slightly wiry, and very unkempt. Then the bag lowers, and I see his eyes. Red and fiery, there is madness lying within them.

My heart begins to race as I realize he is speeding up. I am powerless over my direction, but I still control my speed. I begin to jog backwards, on the grey sidewalk, praying the man will turn a corner. The cloud of dust kicked up by my scuffling feet make my eyes tear.

Truly frightened, I begin to sprint faster and nearly trip on one of the many cracks the charcoal sidewalk. I do everything in my power to put some distance between the two of us, but to no avail. Suddenly, my body freezes. I feel my muscles tighten as I crumbled to the ground, my knee falls into a large pothole in the sidewalk. I am paralyzed.

The man draws closer and all space between us instantly evaporates. He drops the package and its contents scatter onto the sidewalk, kicking up dust, leaves, and debris. It lies there, on that black pathway… That blacker than black pathway. The man grabs my arm. I feel nothing. I can not move away from him. Motionless, staring at that infernal sidewalk, as a sheep does before it is slaughtered, I glance up. Even though the man’s face is inches from my own, I still cannot make out his features. Except, those eyes… Those insanely evil eyes… They peer into my soul, and instantly I grow numb. Everything on my body goes limp; I have absolutely no control over myself.

A knife appears from his back power. A flash of light, reflected from the plunging knife, follows as his hand goes to the exposed flesh on my neck. I flinch.

My eyes shoot open as I sit up panting. Trying to catch my breath I look around. I am back in the safety of my room. “Only a dream,” I tell myself, “It was only a dream.” My hand instinctively shoots to my neck, and I remember. Those eyes… Those hideously evil eyes…For years they have haunted me. I fear they will never truly vanish.

You wrote a memorable story I think, not one I will forget easily. So good work on that. The description was fine as well, your writing did not look manufactured nor did it feel devoid of any substance. So good work on that as well.

But I have two criticisms:
The first is that you switched your tenses a fair bit, I could read through it, but you ought to proofread for that stuff.
The second is your ending; my reaction was: "It was only a dream?! Are you kidding me?!" It was a bit anti-climactic and cliched I thought.

But overall, you did a fine job.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Ok, I liked your idea, But I have a few comments, as well as agreeing almost completely with borg. You DO have quite a few tense problems which is something you definitely want to go over and pick out. I was also confused with some of the actions. First it seemed like your MC was sliding backward, and then it said something about controlling her speed and trying to put some distance between her and the stranger. But if she is going backward towards the stranger, why would she try to run? It may be that I'm just not getting it, but either way I think it needs some clarification.

I also feel that this piece would defiinitely benefit from being turned into a past-tense piece. As it is it feels a bit forced and awkward. Other than that, I liked this, just by itself or as a beggining to a longer story.

PM me with queries or comments :D

I didn't see any tense problems, actually.

And yes, your ending... well, the 'it was just a dream' thing is overused and boring. Perphaps if she was dreaming about something that had lready happened to her...

You never explained what the man did to her. With a little bit of editing, this would be a really powerful piece of writing!
*Don't expect to see me around much in the next couple of weeks. School has started again, and it'll be a couple of weeks before I've settled in. If you've asked me for a critique, you will get it, but not for a little while. Sorry*

I haven't have time to double check since I got all of the comments (thank you by the way for those) but I don't doubt there are tense mistakes. I'll fix those.

For clarification: The MC is able to move perfectly at first, but as time goes on she loses he ablity to move forwards, so to get away from the man she is facing she moves backwards. She can't control which way she moves (she is stuck going backwards) but she can still control how fast she moves backwards (thats what i ment by she can still control her speed). Then she can't move at all and falls to the ground paralized by fear. The man has no visible motives, but when he reaches her he pulls out a knife and puts it to her throat. Thats when she wakes up. Overall I was trying to make it as a dream/memory.

I know the "it was only a dream" is overdone sometimes, but the reality is this really was a dream (i dreamt something similar to this several years ago) and chose to write about it. I'd like to stick with the dream/memory motif for the ending, but any suggestions about how to make the story clearer would be appreciated.
