She resisted the urge to rub her sore ribs and one again tried to muffle her coughs, blushing a little. “…sorry?” She was sorry she’d been found, anyway.

Lia had wisely stayed on the path, well out of the way, but watched in smug delight.

"We've been looking for you for hours. I've got your servants packing your things for you; we're going North tomorrow. With Shea. I want you on your very best behavior or you'll be hearing about it."

“What?” She looked at him in distress. “Why?”

"Diplomatic mission. There's a war going on up there and we need to figure out what to do. And you and Lia need to learn about the culture up there; one of you might replace me one day!"

Rana snorted and rolled her eyes. Fat chance of that. “We all know you already wrote Lia into your will, not me—“ at least that was her guess. “So I don’t see why I need to be a part of this at all. I’ll just stay here and you two can go.” Make a fool of yourselves.

"Nope, you're going. Half your room is already packed. Are you brushed up on Upper Tongue?"

Rana sighed and rolled her eyes again. “If I say no, do I not have to go?”

"You might as well be yelling into an empty plain," Cairbry said with a snort. "You're coming, and that's final."

“Why?” She whined. “Don’t you have enough war here to suit you? Why do you need to add another?”

Cairbry huffed. "I'm not doing this again. We aren't engaging directly. Just sending along supplies to whichever side we choose. You're to learn how to talk to people of other cultures, too. I'm sure you'll get along; they've got no decorum either."

Rana snorted and rolled her eyes, but was quickly realizing this was a losing battle. Godsdamnit.

"Go inside, tidy yourself up. Be ready for tea in an hour; we're eating with one of the generals today...not sure which one."

Rana sighed again and glumly started towards the path, deciding it wasn’t worth her breath to argue. Best save her energy to look for a better argument for why she shouldn’t have to go tomorrow.

He turned and headed back to the safety of the cobbles. "Be sure to brush up on Upper Tongue and the culture. What and what not to say. They don't suffer fools up there."
