"I'll call you Ky if you prefer that, then," she said. "But Kylia does sound wonderful. If I'd had a daughter maybe I'd have named her that."

Ky blushed a deep shade of crimson at the compliment, but smiled shyly. “That’s very kind of you to say… my p-father said that my mother always wanted a daughter named Kylia… big shoes to fill.”

"Well, you are that daughter, aren't you? They're your own shoes." She grinned.

“…true,” Ky agreed hesitantly. “But… I don’t know. I still feel the weight of her expectations — trying to live up to the Kylia she wanted.”

“My papa was soft on me.” Ky shrugged. “He’d have never told me if I was disappointing her, even if I was. He only ever brought her up to compare us.”

"Then he must not think you've done anything disappointing. And if he doesn't think so, does it really matter?"

Ky smiled at that, but then sobered quickly, absolutely horrified by the implications. Of course she’d grown up to be a disappointment. And it very much mattered. Gods.
She sipped her tea.

Ky wanted to leave. She mucked around until she hurt her own feelings; why had she thought it was a good idea to bring up Mama? It never was. Never. Clearly. And now she couldn’t even go skulk off to lick her wounds because she had to be babysat. It’d be all kinds of awkward for Ky to try to excuse herself just for Lady Constance to tell her no.

"I suppose I ought to find Arianna after this," she mused to herself.

“Yes ma’am,” Ky murmured. That’d be a perfect excuse to end this conversation soon; reuniting the Ladies Barasstar with one another and reuniting Ky with her bedroom. “Where do you suppose she might be?”

She shrugged. "She might be walking, like I said."

“Oh… right… sorry.” Ky dipped her head, embarrassed. She felt so distracted now. “Well, I hope you’re able to find her quickly whenever you start looking.”

She smiled slightly. "It'd be funny if she went into the library right after we left, wouldn't it?"

A person is a fool to become a writer. His only compensation is absolute freedom. He has no master except his own soul, and that, I am sure, is why he does it. — Roald Dahl
