“Oh it… it’s going to be more trouble than it’s worth, ma'am,” Ky said quietly, shaking her head. “There’s a reason no one has.”

"Well, Gaius and I aren't the sort to give up easily."

“Yes ma’am.” Ky nodded, keeping to herself that they didn’t have the choice to give up now. Oh no. They’d taken up this battle and it was going to last until one or all of them were in their graves. “And we appreciate that. I… certainly don’t envy you, getting caught in the middle.” Well, she supposed it was she and Tadaaki who got caught in the middle. Ash and Lady Constance had made the choice for themselves. But still. It was a bad choice. And they didn’t seem to realize yet.

She shrugged. "We're duty-bound to help those who need it. Plus, it's gratifying to see bastards like that get their due."

Ky shivered a little. What was Aleth’s due? She didn’t know that she wanted to think about that. Didn’t want to think about him at all. Didn’t want to think about what was going to happen once all the contracts he had in motion ran out and there was no one there to keep things smoother over once they did. How soon until things went to shit? How many unpaid mercenaries were down there looking for them already? How many people would be coming after her, soon, as the public mouthpiece of Aleth to demand their wages? Gods. She was fucking toast.

Constance looked at her in concern. "It'll be alright," she promised her. "He's not going to get to you again."

“Yes ma’am,” she answered weakly. “I just… wish I wasn’t… so recognizable.”

"Because people might come after you?" She frowned. "Grow out your hair a little, maybe? You look a bit...boyish, right now. That could throw them off."

“Yes ma’am,” Ky agreed, subconsciously reaching up to pat at her hair. “I’d thought of that as well… and perhaps I could start wearing dresses again.” She wrinkled her nose despite herself. “…or I could change my name again… I guess.”

“Oh, I mean, it wasn’t that bad!” She realized she was complaining. “I just called myself Kyber instead of Kylia. Went by Ky both times though… somewhat unfortunately now, I guess, though.”

"Your name is Kylia?" she asked with a small smile. "What a beautiful name."

Ky grinned, suddenly looking much younger as her eyes twinkled and her cheeks warmed with genuine flattery. “Thank you, ma’am. I like it very much.”

“No real preference, ma’am,” Ky answered immediately. She knew better than to admit to having desires. She hesitated. She’d been explicitly asked to have an opinion, though. Which made not having one as dangerous as having an unsolicited one. “… I’ve always gone by Ky, though. Kylia feels… formal.”
