“Of that, I have no doubt,” Zander chuckled. His mind flicked back to the journals, but he decided not to bring them up. Ever. If Ky managed to get her hands on them more power to her. He wasn’t going to remind them to confiscate them from her. “General categories?”

"Oh, gods. A lot. There's a big fat book over there that lists all the current and past Librarians and the categories." He pointed to a massive volume sitting at a desk.

It was a smooth deflection. Not specifying what categories he wasn’t allowed to read by pointing out the ones he could. Fine. He’d just need to be careful in his requests. And ask Emery for permission before he asked for specifics. Would the maps be off limits? Trade routes, especially decommissioned ones? Records of which spies and assassins had been in the North in the past decade or so? It seemed like all the helpful information he could think of would likely be considered a threat by Gaius. He’d need to be careful.
Zander nodded.

Emery glanced around the library, waving to a Librarian as he hurried past with a stack of books. "I think Gaius has read a little less than half of this whole place at this point."

Zander’s eyebrows shot up and he looked at Emery skeptically. “Half?”

"I could be exaggerating," he said quickly, holding up his hands. "But maybe forty percent? Maybe? I could be wrong. He probably knows better."

Zander laughed and shook his head. “It doesn’t matter… but he’s not that old. And he’s got a whole region to rule. And visits with his family, which involves a lot of travel. Can’t say I believe that’s left him with time to read half this collection.”

"I'm probably wrong, then. But he's read a lot. That's his favorite thing to do, as far as I can tell."

“That I believe,” Zander said good-humoredly. “He seemed to be having trouble narrowing down his favorites for Ky’s options.”

"That sounds like Gaius." Emery chuckled. "He should probably just turn her loose in here; she won't do any harm."

Zander nodded. “Books were the one thing that could get her to shut up as a kid, you know? I mean she loved reading aloud and spoke somehow even faster than usual trying to tell you all about them. But not until she sat transfixed reading the entire book in a single afternoon.”

"That's how Tomhas is, too. He's a reader--not as much as his brother--and he used to talk my ear off about what he was reading that particular day or week."

Zander smiled. “Sounds like Ky found a kindred spirit, then. Takes after her father. Fathers.”

"We're all glad of that, I think. Best to have something in common with your family and found family, right? Or else conversation gets boring."

“No doubt,” Zander agreed. “Ky really is just so enamored with them all.”
