"Took ten blows to kill it--it was a giant!" He opened the pouch and poured a cluster of small, needle-like metal fragments onto the table. Picking one up, he measured it against his finger. "These were in the mouth--not much hope once they're in you. It was the mandibles we were watching out for. And the legs, of course."

Ky sat forward, watching eagerly as she took it all in. "Did it hurt you?"

"I've got a couple scars," Tomhas said smugly. He undid the top button of his doublet to show the tip of what looked to be a very nasty scar indeed. "I've had worse, I promise."
(Gotta go to work in a couple minutes. I probably won't be able to reply until tomorrow!)

Ky's eyes went even wider as they flicked from the teeth to his scar. That sounded absolutely horrifying. Even though his words made her think about some of the more terrible things that Aleth had done to her. She had probably also had worse before. But that didn't make the spider any less bad. "Were you scared?"

"Of course I was scared," Tomhas snorted. "It was the size of a damn bear." He buttoned up his doublet. "Not to mention my wife was there. I didn't want her to get hurt."

That was fair enough. She supposed it was a rather silly question to ask. "Did she get hurt?"

"A couple scrapes and bruises." Tomhas nodded. "She had a dagger, but it wasn't rubbed down so she couldn't do much damage."

"Well, I'm glad you both survived it!" Ky said. "That sounds terrifying."

"Oh, it was." Tomhas folded his arms behind his neck and propped his head up. "Can't say I'm a stranger to such experiences, but it's always jarring."

"You've fought a lot of spiders?" Ky asked, her admiration for Loquitur growing with each moment that passed.

"Well, there was one pack Gaius and I fought together--the guards usually take care of that sort of thing now. But that's not what I meant. Terrifying experiences in general." He made a light shrugging motion.

"Oh," Ky answered, understanding. It seemed like they were creeping back towards darker conversation. She snuggled Petrir closer, stroking his fur. "I'm sure that must have been difficult."

"Mm." Tomhas, too, had noticed the turn. "How's your kitten? He looks very healthy, sleek."

"He's perfect!" Ky said, perking up in an instant and grinning at him. "He's probably sick of me by now with how much I carry him around, but I lov-- like him. A lot."

"It's fine to love." Tomhas watched the little cat with a small smile. "He's something special, that cat. I can see it in his eyes."
