“That’s because I’m a better speaker than you.” She turned down the hall and tried to hurry away even though it’d be the long way to her bedroom. She was done with him. With them. It always got so sour so fast.

"Rana!" His face reddened and he marched after her. "How dare you! Come back here at once."

"Come here this instant!" He jogged after her. "Now, or I'll find another whipping boy--I thought you'd outgrown them but obviously not."

Rana hesitated, taking a few more strides away. But then the guilt overwhelmed her and she slowed, tensing, half-expecting him to whack her when he caught up. Best to just let him do whatever he wanted to do to her now. No point in dragging a third party into this. Even though she was reluctant to let him see that that threat would work. She didn’t want him to have ammo over her in the future.

He caught up to her, huffing and puffing. "You insolent little mongrel," he growled. "Apologize."

(Nice. I haven’t thought of that concept in years haha but seems fitting for him)
She rolled her eyes and looked at him sourly. “Sorry.” Her tone didn’t sound very sorry at all.

(My second grade teacher read us a book about a whipping boy once. It was pretty good)
He straightened, looking down his nose at her. "Recitations it is, then."

(Nice! I wonder if it’s the same book I’m thinking of, tho I don’t remember the title for sure. But I was about that age)
“Oh, goody. Now you get to listen to me even more; your favorite.” Why couldn’t she just shut up?

(It was just titled The Whipping Boy. It's by Sid Fleischmann.)
"If you think we'll be in the same carriage you've got another thing coming. Go clean up; be ready for tea."

Thank gods for that one. That was the best news she’d heard all day — that she wasn’t going to have to share a carriage with this asshole for the terrible, pointless, stupid journey. But she couldn’t show relief. Not yet. He seemed the type to cut his own nose off to spite his face and she couldn’t risk changing his mind. “Yes, sir.” She saluted sarcastically and started to stride off again.

Cairbry turned and stalked back toward Lia. "Insufferable," he muttered.

She blushed and ducked her head. “I’m sorry she upset you, Papa. It was very rude of her.”

"Yes it was," he agreed. "She's very rude. Wild, like a peasant."

“Very ungrateful,” Lia agreed. “You do so much for us.”
Rana blushed even more and hurried out of earshot, tearing up. How was she always the bad guy? No matter what? What had she done so wrong to end up with such an absolutely terrible father? She hurried to her room.
