“Al,” Aleth replied. “Sir.”

"Al, then. And where are you from originally?" Always "sir" and not "my lord." An interesting choice. Nearly every enslaved person Gaius had taken in always addressed him as "my lord" or something equivalent. Gaius had no preference in particular, but that had been the trend. Perhaps this man was a captured soldier?

(Do you have a suggestion for where he can say? I think Tarr said he should claim northern but that he got captured in the East. I just don’t know where I should say if Ash wants more specificity)

“A small town here in the north, sir,” Aleth answered. “But I’ve been in the East for the past few years. Sir.”

(Yes, I think that's right. Specificity can be improvised. I don't really have any villages fleshed out so it's all good)

"Why?" Gaius wasn't a pretender to kindness; he had sympathy for the fellow but he wasn't going to act like this wasn't an interrogation. No sugar-coating it.

“That’s where my masters wanted me, sir,” Aleth answered, resisting the urge to look Ash in the eye. They weren’t equals here. Not now. “I worked as a butler in a merchant’s home.”

That might explain the "sir," then. Gaius nodded slightly. "Which merchant?"

Aleth hadn’t expected that question. But he knew he couldn’t think about it too long without casting suspicion on him. “A man by the name of… Jesten.”

"Jesten," Gaius repeated, filing the name away in his mind to make checks. "I see. And who captured you?"

Aleth had underestimated Ash. He’d expected skepticism about the story. Had those lies prepared. These were things that had never even crossed Aleth’s mind. “Uh… I think his name was—“ Aleth whimpered, writhing as he clutched at his leg, buying more time. “Apologies. His name was Gareth.”

(I'll reply in a few hours, I've got dinner and then I'm meeting a puppy!)

(Ayyy, getting to squeeze in a few more!)

"Do you know if he was affiliated with a specific group?"
"Perhaps we ought to slow down on questioning," Sera said sternly. "Ask him something else, Gaius." Gaius glanced up at Sera, frowning. Fine, then. She had a point.
"My apologies." He cleared his throat. "I prefer to get straight to the point of the matter, but I understand how that might be distressing. Why have you come here?"

Aleth was grateful that the questions were angling back towards the lies that he had prepared. The woman might have taken two of his toes, but at least she was his saving grace now. “I heard that you show compassion to men like me, my lord.”

"That is often true," Gaius allowed. "It depends on the case." He tapped his cane lightly on the ground. "What do you seek by coming here? Do you wish to return to your merchant or is there some other service you hope I can provide?"

(So many of our lines in this could be taken out of context)

(Hahah it’s true)

“Whatever his lordship deems best,” Aleth answered humbly. This was it. His chance to sell it. Or get sold. Or worse. “I was rather hoping — if it’s not too bold of an ask — that his lordship might be in need of an additional butler. Or servant. I’m happy to fulfill any role that would please his lordship.”
