"Well... I enlisted when I was fourteen. Was just a dumb kid before that. Well... was a dumb kid for a while after that, too," he said with a sheepish grin. "Started traveling a lot for work when I was, I don't know, maybe eighteen or nineteen. Decided to, uh, heh, become my own boss, if you will, when I was twenty-six. Have kinda just been figuring it out as I go along ever since."

"So you're a mercenary or something? Cool!" Emery nodded approvingly.

"Something," Zander agreed with a smile. "It's exciting if nothing else."

"I bet. I hardly leave Venholm; I haven't been out of the Northern Realm in six years. What sort of things do you see out there? What are memorable moments?"

"Oh, heh, wow, that's a big question." Zander let out a little chuckle, thinking for a moment. "Pratik and I took on an entire band of slavers by ourselves in Totallisa once -- it was a terrible decision, but memorable no doubt." He shook his head with a rueful smile. "And then I kind of make a habit of making myself a pain in the ass to powerful people. Full time job, really, but someone's gotta do it."
(how would you feel about me sprinkling in a bit of my lore here? 1000% not offended if you'd rather keep it to your canon so feel free to say no -- but, like, in my world, there are As'veri which are basically zombies? ig? Where sorcery works by summoning an evil spirit, and if you summon one too strong then it kills you and possesses your body and everyone is terrified of them because they're super powerful -- tho super rare -- but I also don't want to break this universe if that doesn't fit well here haha)

(No, by all means! Magic is a bit iffy as a system for me--I've never been good at fleshing it out and the like. I suppose there could be zombie like things on another continent. After all, there are gorilla civilizations and dragons out there, right?)
"Fair, fair." Emery grinned. "Have you made an ass out of yourself to King Harold yet?"

(haha totally fair! Magic is definitely one of the shakier aspects of my lore, but I've developed the As'veri haha Jerica's primary antagonist is one and is the exact one he's going to reference here haha)
Zander laughed. "Oh, Harold loves me, whether he'll admit it or not."

"No, no he's not," Zander agreed with a smirk. "A bit too easy, perhaps. But we can be useful to each other, so it all works out."

"As I said, he and I are similar in a lot of ways," Zander laughed but decided to move on quickly so as to not muss up the mood again by reminding Emery that his savior was an asshole. "But it's something I have to keep in mind, I'm afraid. If you're gonna spend your life running, you need to know where you have little pockets you can stow up in for a week or two."

"I know it is," he said with a wink and playful smirk. He thought for a moment, sobering slightly, but still maintaining the shadow of a smile. "Gotta be smart if you wanna be dumb."

Emery nodded sagely. "Wise words from a wise man. You have my respect, Zander."
