"That's no surprise." Anneliese picked up the pace and stepped through the gate. "They're kids; it's hard not to have fun as a kid."

“True enough,” Ky said with a grin. She caught the glimpse of one of the kids darting behind one of the bushes up to the right.

Mattathias giggled as she spotted him. "Hi!" He waved.

“Hi!” Ky waved back, grinning. “What are you up to?”

"I'm hiding from Oscar!" He crouched behind the bush. "And where's Oscar?" Anneliese asked. "With Uncle Tomhas."

“And where’s Uncle Tomhas?” She was pretty sure she was never going to get used to saying his first name, much less attaching familial honorifics to it instead of ‘Lord’ — but she’d keep trying.

Mattathias poked his head out, squinting through the dozens of ice sculptures. Then he pointed down the path. "He's that way, I think."

“Thanks.” Ky nodded, feeling a spike of anxiety at the idea of leaving such a small child on his own. But, then, she hadn’t been tasked with watching him this time. “Good luck hiding from Oscar.”

Mattathias grinned at her. "I bet you can't find Marcella though!"

“Oho is that a challenge I hear?” Ky smirked at him. She was, apparently, not above being peer pressured by preschoolers.

"Yeah!" He tilted his chin up. "See if you can find her. I bet you can't!" "I bet we can," Anneliese said with a grin.

“You’re on!” Ky said, still grinning. “We’re good seekers.”

Anneliese looked around, trying to spot Marcella. "It shouldn't be too hard, right? She's got dark hair and dark clothes, and this whole place is white."

“True enough,” Ky agreed, scanning the area around the height of the twins. “I’ll check this way.” She started towards the right.

Anneliese split off to the left, looking closer to the ground and in the trees that sported carved ice spiraling up their branches. The entire garden was filled with such things, some complicated and some simple, some small and some enormous. Near where Ky was looking, there was a life-sized horse sculpture rearing up.
