She glanced at him then back at the shelf. Something told her he wouldn’t be particularly charitable to a slave. “I came up this way with… an unkind employer. Tomhas thought I was a little young to have to deal with that and offered to let me stay with him and Anneke instead. Sort of hit things off with my family and it led to a formal adoption.”
