Hello, folks! I'm an older member returning with a new account, here to attempt NaPo once again. Art and poetry are a balm to my soul, and YWS has played a big role in introducing me to that world, and so I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. <3

01.

a home you wanted,
and a family,
a little garden to nurture and tend and cherish,
and dance your praises before the sun when they flourished.
but, everywhere you have wandered,
you have found that the mud is too soft
for no matter how lightly you dare to tread
soon the green shoots and growing things are trampled underfoot once again.

02.

Once, I was dreaming.
And I knew it was a dream,
But oh, what a wild and visceral night that was.
The smell of coconuts when I kissed her hair,
The light in her eyes when she looked at me,
The way her fingers traced over my skin like....

Like wanderers- who already know the way home.
And I knew I was dreaming, but my soul would not be still.
It was restless, and cried to me,
How could there ever be a home more welcoming
Than bathing in the glow of her gaze?
How could a morning ever sing
Without hearing her laughter?

And even though I knew I was dreaming,
My heart broke, my soul wept,
And I have not slept since then.

So this one was interesting, I was inspired by a friend to try to introduce rhyming into my poetry, and uhh... I have a rap song now, I guess? Complete with musical soundtrack in my head. But tbh I know I don't always have a good grasp on rhythm, so Idk how well it holds up the whole way through.

03.

There's a ghost in your eyes
That I swear I recognize
From somewhere deep inside
And it calls me home tonight

Take my hand, and we'll
Run away,
Make the pain all just
Go away
Save the fear for another day
But darling, don't you know-
I'm not here to stay

Call it a game, call it insane
We both know I'm obsessed with the pain
Light me on fire, string me up by a live wire
Call it insane
At the end of the day
At the end of the day
Everybody knows
I'm in love with the pain

Spilling your secrets like wine on a carpet
This could be the part where it all fell apart, but
Darling, don't you know-
I'm not here to stay

Leave the stain, covered in red
Then forget me like I'm already dead
You left a mark on my heart that I wear like a scar
I know you could heal it, but baby we both feel it
I'm not going to stay

Take my hand, and we'll
Run away,
Make the pain all just
Melt away
Save the fear for another day
But darling, don't you know-
I'm not here to stay

At the end of the day
At the end of the day
Everybody knows
I'm obsessed with the pain

It's killing me inside
I felt your heart beat, I know it keeps time with mine
The looks in your eyes when you're high on a good time
Makes me wanna make you mine tonight

But darling, you already know
I'm not going to stay

Spoiler! :
Oh! Hi! Lovely poems so far!

Love the image contrast of dancing / mud steps and these lines:
everywhere you have wandered,
you have found that the mud is too soft
for no matter how lightly you dare to tread
soon the green shoots and growing things are trampled underfoot once again.

Great imagery and metaphor going on!

Welcome to NaPo! :)
you should know i am a time traveler &
there is no season as achingly temporary as now
but i have promised to return

It's so great to have an old member rejoin! That is one of the reasons NaPo is so special for this site!

Like wanderers- who already know the way home.

This feels sooo beautiful, I love this part of the poem!

I like all your poems so far! The last one is good too, I am loving the rap song vibes and the way you repeat the sentence in that one makes the flow even better. Keep Writingđź‘Ť

Spoiler! :
I'm so intrigued on poem 3 and how you sing it in your head - if you're comfortable, you could even share a recording of it, but just by reading it, I can tell it would make for a FIRE rap song - I just love it so much! "Spilling your secrets like wine on a carpet" <- FABULOUS simile! " The smell of coconuts when I kissed her hair" is also one of my favorite lines so far - makes me think of beaches and summertime (or maybe it just means they wear coconut oil and I'm reading too much into it haha)
You've done an incredible job with NaPo <333

04.

Shadows make no sound upon the earth
And the memory of you seems to have slipped out the door while my back was turned.
Into the night you faded,
Darkness into dark
I wonder that that brilliant silhouette I knew
Might be so utterly void of form and color once more.

05.

I have been treading through this sea
(Drowning, I think)
For eons unheard.
And when I feel that the salt is eating me open again-
Pouring blood, danger, do not leak-
I stop and count the bubbles.
And I think it is a wonder that in all this ocean,
This vast and terrible expanse
I am here and I am breathing through it all.
These lungs are mine, this skin is my own,
And I tell it to pull itself together and hold me in
Just a little longer.

06.

Whispers skitter like spiders over my skin
I can hear the echoes calling
Can't you tell they're dying

And who am I to pull the thread
Unravel silken web weaved so carefully
Intricate as lies, beautiful as poison
And the color of spit on dust-smeared shoes

I, too, am caught up in this
Infinite tapestry
And there's a nettle through my heart
And I would tear it out, and I would die and bleed,
And die again
To make their noises stop.

07.

When we were laying side by side and looking up at the stars
And you told me how you longed to travel them someday,
My heart responded, I will take you there.
If it takes me ten thousand years to unlearn gravity's embrace
I will find you then, and I will pull you out with me
Do not let the dust of the earth settle over your bones before that time.

I didn't speak a word then, because what does the heart know of how to live a life?
Or how to love a soul?
What does it know but how to break itself endlessly?

If I'd told you that I see the world in your eyes
Constellations, comets, morning dew, and fireflies
Would it make any difference?
Would it matter if you knew how my heart cries for you?

How you were the stars to me
And I was weightless in your presence
Yes, there was darkness, and emptiness
A void blacker than night
But how brilliant burned those firey lights!
I watched you imploding under the weight of your own gravity
Yet always birthing something new with the very same exhale

An ocean is a small thing compared to a universe,
Yet, to the heart, the distance measured is the same.
In this sea of uncertainty, gravity was pulling me under
And you were too nebulous for me to fit in my palm.
And so my heart whispers, and the rising bubbles echo,
Do not let the dust settle.

Spoiler! :
So atp a lot of them are going to be half-finished, or ones I rushed to complete, because I really struggle with ending my poetry and I often take months to keep adding to them or editing. But here's what I got in a month.

08.

When winter was letting go of the land
And flower petals chased us as we ran
I kept you in sideglace view
......
As you told me a story
Of how you were lost and roaming among the stars
And I saved you, pulling you into orbit

...

With these broken hands I cannot pull my own soul from hell
Was I a salvation? Or an atmosphere, for you,
Lost in space, to finally ignite?
You lost trajectory,
Did not anticipate my gravity
How fiercely you burned, and how lucky you are
To be flung into the nothingness again
Back into free-fall

09.

There is always a break between the lightning and the thunder.

I never dream when I'm asleep, but
When we're alone together, I'm not here.
There are words spilling from lips and they hover unheard between us
Slowly building into a thundercloud, certain to break someday.
I don't notice, I'm in a different place,
I only feel, like some far-off dream,
The drawing-near of heavy air, thick with some vague threat.

In a few words I was blinded,
And for a moment everything was washed in stark, sickly non-color
Until the darkness furled back to cover the landscape,
And the stars were lost overhead.

In darkness I strain for sight,
Some murky outline of the road I've come down
And the stones that seemed to grow from the path just before my feet.
I know I am bruised from falling over and over
But, for all the light shows me, I could be walking as a dead man.

Then comes the thunder.

I was numb, I was blinded-
Sitting together in that room, suddenly wide awake.
There was only echoing silence in my head where there should have been our conversation.
Then everything was chaos, and the roaring of some angry god,
And I could not have heard the words if I tried.
I could not feel my own heartbeat for the trembling in my chest,
This earthquake that exploded in the sky.

Perhaps I never dream because night is endless,
And I am lost in the midst of the unreality of this world.
