The Funeral

I've been standing here alone
for some time now
and this funeral has become a vigil
without end, without hommage,
and by now I'm ankle-deep in mire.

I've been murmuring lullabies
for some time now,
but the unliving who are not dead
and the undead who are not living
are not allowed to sleep.

This grave has been empty
for some time now
and this funeral is just a sham.
The body was never buried here
and I've only just realized I should mourn.

Spoiler! :
@Quillfeather ahhhhh thank you so much! I am actually thinking of developing a loose storyline concept in this one? I have a progression in mind at the very least. Thanks for leaving your comment, I'm glad you like the first poem! ^-^

The Ceremony

You should have seen them digging.
digging up mud, and thistle, and rotting root systems.
digging up rat skulls and rabbit bones.
digging up mycelium.

You should have seen them at midnight.
binding broken roots into bronchioles and clogging them with mud,
binding rodent bones into a ribcage and damming it with mud,
binding thistles into a voicebox and choking it with mud,
binding mycelium into capillaries and injecting them with mud,
binding the rat's skull at the top
and cramming it with mud.

This was their zombie.
And when the mud crusted over they forbade
the zombie any tears, in case the mud softened
and would slip.

Disclaimer, not knocking anyone's religion as a whole here, but some people do and have used it with the intention of hurting other people and Imma put it in my poem. So like, if you don't want to deal with some religious satire, don't read it

Funeral Rites

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here
in sure and certain hope of the resurrection into
this life we have created from the earth,
and thus commend our twice dearly, triply departed
into eternity, into the glory of Lazarus, into the most holy
afterlife. For our twice dearly, triply departed shall not lie in the grave
which Christ our Lord hath sanctified by leaving it.
Forever ashes, low as the dust,
in the name of our God we command thee:
Breathe mud.

There were, of course, some stipulations,
graveyard gates, if you will.
Not that they were afraid of grave robbers
after pillaging that hole themselves,
but the undead, uncertain in their beginnings,
require boundaries.

Breath of Life

There was a time when I thought I didn't require oxygen.
The pull... and push... of dust through dry airways,
through dichotomies of predestination was enough
for me. It was easy to close my eyes and trace my breath
along mudpack walls barricading pathways that I couldn't dream
existed. Broken roots can lead nowhere
but dead ends. And after all, dust was certainly enough
for dust.

Spoiler! :
Breath of Life - what an exquisite poem?! "through dichotomies of predestination" and "trace my breath along mudpack walls" is such raw, gritty imagery! Consider me absolutely obsessed.
I also quite like this line from poem #4:
but the undead, uncertain in their beginnings,
require boundaries

It's omnious, and purely haunting, and I feel like that one line is very evocative of your entire thread!
Keep up the great work! <333

Spoiler! :
@Euphory thanks so much! I love that the ending of #4 left you with that feeling, that's was I was going for! Haha I've definitely hit a stumbling block with this thread, but I'm hoping to continue work pretty soon, even if not for NaPo
