The Lover's Tax
there's only one way
to make up for your mistakes,
your faults and your failures,
for holding your special one back:
uplifting her,
cherishing her,
spoiling her with the world--
rose bouquet of
reds, pinks, whites, and
a center yellow king;
European chocolates
made of the finest recipes
passed between family
generations;
a handwritten poem,
an odyssey of your time
with your one and only,
memories rapidly refreshed
at the flick of a pen;
a chocolate Labrador puppy
squirming in your arms,
nipping at the floral arrangement
tickling his nose--
all to see her smile once again.
but when your treasure,
your queen,
maintains her own personal space,
accepts your gifts with a familiar grace,
slams the hickory door in your face,
perhaps the mistress
three nights ago
simply wasn't worth the lover's tax.
