Yeah writing a book is easy.. but making the book a bestseller is a bit harder.

He got the young reading again. That is a great thing.

And I acctually think that even if someone takes ideas from another writer it is not bad, that is what literature is, that is how literature evolves.
To copy reality is good... But to create reality is much, much better.

I would put that down to Miss Rowling  And she did it unintentionally.

Taking ideas is plagiarism. Taking ideas and using them to inspire your own work is not.

Paolini strays towards the former.

Tolkien merely just took some of the elf believes, merged a few of them and put in a few of his own ideas.... the elves were not his invention... technically.

Elves before Tolkien were little people who helped Santa at Christmas (in many works) however Tolkien merged them into Norse mythology.

Paolini merged that into Eragon. They came from the sea. They are tall, they have pointy ears, they are accomplished archers, they are good magicians.

I think we should leave this to the debating area now

actually Tolkien's dwarfs and Elves are pretty much the same to Eragon's. So i still think its a 'idea taking' event.

I just want to say one last thing....

The idea that elves were small little santas helpers is a quite new one..... Here in finland elves were called spirits of the woods in the 1200 or so and before it. Even the goblins were a finish legend... so how did Tolkien know of them?

He came to Finland.

Have any of you researched on elves before??

If any of you have then what Lord Anzius said would not surprise you and you Lord Anzius would not have post about it. Of course elves are called and believed in many different ways.

For example.

Elves = mostly elves like Tolkien's work and Poalini's, without the extra strength and extreme magic etc.

Elfs = The small elves who are like you said fairies leprechauns etc.

here's the link check it out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elves

And yes i didn't know about elves a lot until i read this.

This is a debating topic, but it's becoming one. Perhaps we should start a debate in the appropriate forum?

Yes, people will believe what they believe. Both sides put up strong cases, but the world will not end if nobody wins. If you believe that Paolini is the worst writer ever, that's okay. If you believe that he's a great writer, that's okay too. Nobody is going to kill you because of either belief. (at least not that I know of  )

It's time to shut down this debate.
Admiration: Our polite recognition of another's resemblance to ourselves.

Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.

Confidence: the feeling a person has before he fully understands the situation.

Shin: A device for finding furniture in the dark.

I don't believe he is the worst writer ever. Sure, I disagree with his word choices and generally everything else, but hey! May I direct you to:

This is getting very off-topic.
