Chapter 1

What a wonderful way to start a morning, I thought sarcastically as I picked myself up off the floor.

“Is it just me, or do you need to work on your balance?” I turned around to find my best friend Kenzie laughing at me.

“Hey, you know me; I like to get familiar with the floor before I walk on it. Make sure it’s stable and whatnot.”

She giggled. “Uh huh. Sure.”

I shrugged, holding back a smile. “I’m not kidding.”

She rolled her eyes. “Somehow, I don’t believe that.”

“Are you calling me a liar?!” I asked, looking as offended as possible.

“Maybe…”

I rolled my eyes and opened my mouth to give a witty response, but a concerned voice made me completely forget what I was going to say.

“Hey, are you okay? I saw you fall, and I wasn’t sure what happened. Do you need to go to the nurse?” A guy with auburn hair and sparkling sapphire eyes frowned, eyeing my knee. When I looked down to find out what he was staring at, I discovered that there was a trail of blood running down my left calf and onto my pink flip-flops. Great. At least it didn’t get on my new denim shorts.

I turned to open my locker. “I’ll be fine. I’m just a major klutz. What’s your name? I haven’t seen you before.”

“Kale,” he said, reaching out to grab the math book that tumbled out of my locker as I opened it. “I lived here when I was little, but my parents divorced when I was eight, and we moved down to South Padre Island. And now, my mom has a new boyfriend, and he wanted her to move in with him. So she did. And I’m back in San Antonio.”

“Wow. Sorry about your parents. And the moving. But San Antonio is pretty cool.” I bent down to put a band-aid over my knee. “I’m Lauren, by the way. And this is Kenzie.”

“Finally, some recognition!”

“You can sit with us at lunch if you want. Who do you have first period?”

He glanced at his schedule. “Gorgodi.”

“Oh! Social Studies. Mr. Gorgodi is pretty cool. I’ve got Health with Ms. Saunders. Let me see your schedule.” He handed it to me willingly, obviously glad to have a friend. “We have 2nd and 4th period together, and lunch. That’s English and Science. I’ll save you a spot.”

“Thanks. I better go. Don’t want to be late on the first day.” He handed me my math book back.

“Okay, cool. Gorgodi is down that hallway, third on the left. See you next period.”

“Thanks for your help. See ya!”

I slammed my locker and turned back to Kenzie, only to find that she was gone. I looked down at my watch and realized that I had about thirty seconds before class. Kenzie flew toward me out of nowhere, and pulled me into the health classroom.

“Do you have any idea who was watching you?” she whispered urgently.

“No,” I said cluelessly. “Who?”

“Max!”

“You’re kidding! Did he see me fall?!” My cheeks warmed, and I knew they were slowly turning an unappealing shade of pink.

“I think so. Sorry. But still, he was watching you the whole time you were talking to Kale, and he looked jealous!”

“No way! You think he likes me?”

“Maybe,” she smiled.

“Girls!” We both looked up to see Ms. Saunders scowling at us.

“Sorry Ms. Saunders.” I mumbled, my excitement lost for the moment.

She continued her lesson, but I heard about 3 words before she turned around and Kenzie tossed a note onto my desk.

So who was that guy?

I checked to make sure that Ms. Saunders still wasn’t paying attention. Then I scribbled my response.

Kale. Just moved her frm Padre. Needs a friend. Kinda cute.

She grinned, and I knew her response would be something interesting. She was about to give me the note when Ms. Saunders called out, “Lauren, what’s the largest organ of the human body?”

I glanced at the board. There was a person drawn on it with labels on each of the organs. I was about to say the heart, but then I remembered. “Skin?”

She frowned. “Yes, that is correct.”

The second she turned back around and continued writing, the note appeared on my desk.

U like him? He’s definitely cute. All those freckles are annoying though…

I rolled my eyes. No. I like Max. You know that.

It went on like that for the rest of the class. Ms. Saunders almost caught us once, but we’re experienced note-passers, so we got away with it. When the bell rang, I dashed off to English. Not only was I more than happy to get away from Kenzie’s interrogations and Ms. Saunders’ dirty looks, but for some strange reason, I couldn’t wait to see Kale.

Oh no! *squeaking* she's going to become popular and nasty, isn't she? And poor Kale is... oh no! Oh, damn *sniffling* and I was beginning to like her. I don't like her now. She doesn't see the charm Kale has?
By the way, the whole 'flirt or not flirt' is rather immature. I don't think people who consider themselves grown ups [like your character seemed to] do that. You could write 'I was so surprised to see him that my tone came out too cheerful. I hoped he wouldn't understand too much out of it.' or something like that. But she likes thinking of herself more of a grownup than Kenzie. so...
I can't believe this is one of those stories about girls going popular. I'm sure it's going to be interesting - I wasn't meaning to offend or anything, it's just that I get this gut wrenching feeling whenever I read these stories about everything slipping away because of your own idiocy. Oh, and she is going to loose everything over this idiotic Max! People do dumb things when they are in love, I am a witness. And just so you know to include this, friends don't give up. They might wait at the side lines, they might be angry, but they never really give up, even if they say otherwise. Pm me for the next chapter *becoming braver* I'll handle it. Even if she does all the wrong things. If Max is nice then it could be nice... no mistakes on her side... oh but that won't be interesting!
can't wait! ofir

Hello I am Bondgirl, but you can call me Hope. I will be reviewing you today! This is not an attack on your writing, just my own personal observations. :D

Later, at lunch, I saw Max with his latest girlfriend, Carly. He always had a different girl on his arm. I sighed dramatically.

That makes me think of her sighing loudly, when I read the rest it would seemed that she would be sighing more to herself.

First off, Max was the most popular guy in our grade. And second, he went out with only pretty, popular girls.

It should be a comma here, not a period.

They reminded me of two perfectly made Valentine’s chocolates: chocolates that were meant for me and no one else.

This part seems a little fake, I mean really, chocolates? Also why is she so possessive over him?

He looked uncomfortable, although I wasn’t sure if it was because he had picked up on my flirting or something else. “Um, our science project?” he answered uncertainly.

Oh,” I replied. “Crap. I forgot.”

“That’s okay.” He reassured me. “I started coming up with ideas on my own. I think we should meet sometime after school. How about my house tonight at 6?”

I was puzzled. We had just gotten the project this morning. How could he possibly have come up with ideas, decided it was okay for me to come over to his house tonight, and picked a time between now and 4th period? I said yes anyway. After all, we had to work on it sometime, didn’t we?

That makes it sound like they had to have the project finished in like the next two days. Not as if it had been assigned that day. The main character seems very stuck up near the end of this part, it makes the reader not like the main character. I have read a lot of stories like this one, and it is always the same plot line! Girl love popular guy she can't have, ditches all her other friends to become popular, does not realize that her one guy friend is in love with her, then finds out popular guy is a jerk, and realizes that guy friend is her one and only true love. To tell you the truth, it has become very predictable, so next time try something new.

Hi!
I really liked your story. I found it interesting to read and I didn't find any mistakes. But I do kind of find that it is a little predictable but I still really want to keep reading it. I think you did a really good job so I can't wait to read more! :)

Hey there!

“Hey Kenzie!” I greeted my best friend excitedly. This doesn't catch attention. You need a better hook

“Hey!” she replied. “So what did you get on number 10?” She was referring to the math homework we were discussing last night on the phone before bed. Haha, is this really what normal teenage girls talk about?

“Um, I think the answer was 18.93, right? And what did you get on number 7 on the science homework?”

“D. Now come on! We’re going to be late for class.” I followed her even though I knew we still had at least 3 minutes left. No sense in being late if I could be early.

Later, at lunch, I saw Max with his latest girlfriend, Carly. He always had a different girl on his arm In his arms . I sighed dramatically. No matter how hard I tried, I would never be one of those girls. First off, Max was the most popular guy in our grade. And second, he went out with only pretty, popular girls. I was neither pretty nor popular. Well, that’s what I thought. Too bad. I could pretty much swim in his big brown eyes. They reminded me of two perfectly made Valentine’s chocolates: chocolates that were meant for me and no one else. I liked this analogy: Only me and nobody else.

I tore my eyes away from Max just in time to see Kale approaching my table. What could he possibly want from me? I scanned my memory to the last conversation we had but came up blank. Kale was new to our school. He moved here from Padre this year, but despite an entire summer of surfing, he wasn’t tan. Instead, his entire body was covered in freckles. It was cute, in a way though..

“Hey,” he greeted as he approached the table.

“Hey yourself.” I retorted, flirting even though I didn’t mean to. “What brings you here?”

He looked uncomfortable, although I wasn’t sure if it was because he had picked up on my flirting or something else. “Um, our science project?” he answered uncertainly.

“Oh,” I replied. “Crap.

The second Kale was out of earshot (which wasn’t long after he left), Kenzie started taunting me like an 8-year-old. “You li-ike him!”

“Shut up. I don’t!” I replied, out of habit. But I actually meant it. I wasn’t attracted to him. He was cute, but that was all. I liked Max.

“Yeah, you do.” This was pretty much how our lunches went. I had to admit, Kenzie was quite immature, not to mention a bit of a nerd. To her, looking at any guy meant you liked him. But I loved her anyways.

I sighed and pushed myself away from the table. As I threw my lunch away, I watched Max out of the corner of my eye. God, he was hot. I told myself I couldn’t have him, but something, somewhere inside me, told me that I could. Nice ending

Hey! Cy here!! :) I'm glad you fixed your chapter. I have only one question: What took you so long? I've been waiting forever!! Anyway, love the story. The only thing I'm going to say, as an advice, is that take it easy on the story and don't try to rush it (Don't info-dump)enjoy it and like I say leave us wanting more. Be mean .

Good luck!
Please pm me when you post your next chapter. I really want to read it.

Thanks! It took me a while because I wasn't sure what to cut and what to leave. I also needed to do a lot of brainstorming and character development. Long story short, I had to completely start over and rewrite my outline. If I wasn't such a perfectionist, it probably wouldn't have taken so long. Anywho, I will try not to info-dump and I promise to do my best to be mean. Chapter two is currently about half finished, so I shall post it soon! Thanks for your devotion to my story! It's great to have fans, as we all know, and I'll PM you when I post chapter two!
