". . . Ah. Thanks." Tavis retreated to the other side of the fire and settled under the blanket, which smelled suspiciously and strongly canine.

James huddled up beside Tasha, silent. The noise of the howling wind and the cold gusts entering the cave seemed to only be intensifying in coldness.

She shudders, whether in the cold or in something else, it's hard to tell as she curls up against James against the biting wind and ice.
"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost."

The strength and eerie feeling of the storm made Tavis wonder, as he lay there in the dark, whether there was something more than just the wind and ice out there in the forest. He wanted to ask Mark and Agrona, but he supposed they would rather get as much rest as possible; he didn't blame them.

"James," Tasha murmurs, accidentally forgetting the alias - she isn't thinking particularly clearly in the growing cold. Tavis might be too far to hear it, though, over the wind. "Something's off. Can you feel it?"

James leaned in to Tasha and put an arm around her, hoping to share body warmth more. "Yes..." he shivered. "I don't think this is a normal storm, Agrona."

As he lay there, Tavis felt his face warming at the sounds of the two others shifting about and whispering. Surely they weren't . . . romantically involved? He choked, coughing violently and loudly, shrinking under the blanket.

James looked up to Tavis, sensing his discomfort. He wasn't going to stop sharing the blanket with Tasha just because Tavis's face was turning red (he was cold), but a question did come to mind to break what Tavis probably felt was uncomfortable silence.

"Did you see anything out there in the storm, besides sleet and snow?"

"I don't know," said Tavis after he'd caught his breath. "All I'm sure of is that something about that storm isn't quite right."

"It smells wrong," she says, voice quiet but still audible. "It smells....like death." She shudders, closing her eye.

"Is there anything you two would care to tell me about this forest? Is there really something dangerous out there?" asked Tavis warily.

"No, not that we've run into, and we've been travelling for weeks. Still..."

James slowly turned his head to look at Tasha. Well that's a lie. Of course they'd run into something dangerous - the giant feline. But that was a considerable distance away, and it was also dead now. As for this forest and the storm...

James stared at the fire.

"We didn't see anything that would've precipitated this storm, but as someone native to this land, there is an old wives' tale... of storms that follow a white bear spirit. Some stories say the bear causes them by some sort of magic. Some say it's a 'curse,' even though those don't really exist..." he pauses, shivering for a moment as he pulls the blanket tighter around himself.

"Of course, it was only an old wives' tale. No one ever believed it to really be true... but... most stories are based in at least some truth. And with our history - of our world - I wouldn't be surprised-"

A shrill shriek of wind fills their ears. It's eerie, but beneath the high pitch is what almost sounds like a low roar.

"-I've learned to not doubt the old tales as much as I'd like to."

She chuckles ruefully. "Seems we have a knack for getting into trouble with odd...things."
