Points are what you earn by reviewing! You can earn up to 100 points per review if it's long enough. Points, right now, can't really be used for much past giving gifts. But, they can be used to show how many reviews you've done. (You can also earn points by greeting [saying hello to people in the Welcome Mat] and answering posts in Writing Tips).
Hope this answers your question.

Ink is blood. Paper is bandages. The wounded press books to their heart to know they're not alone.
Points are also often given as prizes for contests held by YWSers in the contests forum. Apart from what Rosey said, I don't think they are being used for much else right now.
yes I just joined the web site. it is confusing, I am pretty sure that the longer the review the more point you receive for it, you need points in order to post new works. then it all drops back down to zero , and your bankrupt. so review!
Nope, no rewards for having a lot of points. Just bragging rights if you are so inclined, as points show how much you've reviewed/greeted/posted in Writer's Corner.
You can use them to donate to others for contests/extra thanks for good reviews, giving gifts, or as prizes for contests.

Next to every person's point count is a "donate" option. This donate option is available on both their profile and any posts they make. Click it to donate.
